Erfurt is growing
It’s not for nothing that the Cologne Insti-tute for Economic Research named Erfurt among the ten most dynamic cities in Germany in its 2014 rankings. You can see the changes everywhere and sense a spirit of dynamism: all kinds of housing projects are being built across the city, new hotels are on the brink of completion, and Erfurt train station is being turned into a hub for Germany’s high-speed ICE trains as well as the centre of a fantastic new district.
Erfurt
is going places!
Most of the old town has been restored and combines medieval charm with the buzz of an urban centre.
Erfurt, the regional capital of Thuringia, is a prime hotspot for development and, as such, offers the many young people who choose to settle here excellent prospects for the future. It scores highly in rankings of locational factors such as quality of life, housing and, thanks to a burgeoning labour market, employment opportunities.
The many companies that have moved to Erfurt in recent years are making this possible.
‘Erfurt is growing’ is therefore the confi-dent message that is currently being heard all over Germany. But Erfurt is much more than that: it is also one of the country’s prettiest cities, is centrally located and continues to establish itself at the heart of Germany, and of Europe.

Location and transport links
Road
The A4 and A71 autobahns meet right outside the city and ensure fast connec-tions from all direcconnec-tions. Together with the eastern bypass, they form the Erfurt ring road, whose twelve junctions provide rapid access to the entire municipal area and make it quick and easy to reach all residential areas and business districts. Multi-lane feeder roads, such as the B4, help traffic to flow smoothly into the city.
Air
Business travellers can park right outside the terminal, check in and use their own or a chartered plane to get to their next meeting – saving a huge amount of time in the process. Every year Erfurt-Weimar Airport registers several thousand small-aircraft movements. It is also ideal for freight transportation, and holidaymakers in particular appreciate the fast connec-tions to the city centre. Journey times to and from the airport on tram line no. 4 are just 20 minutes.
Rail
From Berlin via Erfurt to Munich; from Dresden to Frankfurt: changes to Deutsche Bahn’s railway timetables in 2017 will see well over 35,000 people a day depart, arrive or change at Erfurt train station. This will make the city a major hub for intercity rail transport in the heart of Germany. New high-speed routes will reduce travel times dramatically and will be coordinated with connecting services, including to the surrounding Thuringia region.

Projects for the future
A
growing
city.
Buoyant growth and fantastic opportuni-ties for investment – these are remarks that are increasingly being heard in con-nection with Erfurt. There’s a lot going on in the city right now and people are justi-fiably optimistic about the future. Erfurt is an important part of Germany’s biggest rail infrastructure project of recent decades, German Unity Transport Project 8. The Berlin-Erfurt section will come into operation in December 2015, with Erfurt-Munich to follow in 2017. These new high-speed routes will reduce travel times and the services will be coordinated to make it easier for passengers changing trains. This will make Erfurt even more attractive as a location for meetings, conferences and key business services.
Erfurt is beautiful and Erfurt is buzzing, and it always leaves quite an impression on
visitors in town on business or for a short break. The city’s hotels and guesthouses registered 447,300 guests and 772,500 overnight stays in 2014, a new record that sustains the upward trend seen over the past few years. Tourism is a key economic factor for Erfurt and this has not been lost on investors, with two newly built hotels that opened in September 2015 offering an additional 240 beds for guests. Further hotels are in the pipeline.
But Erfurt is not just a magnet for visitors. For a number of years now, it has experi-enced population growth that has greatly exceeded all forecasts. New citizens need places to live and because there is hardly any vacant housing stock in the city, a wide range of residential projects are currently in the making. The planned and ongoing developments are spread out across the entire municipal area and include the
Johannes feld estate, which will have its own nursery and park, as well as the resi-dential buildings on the former Braugold brewery site. They are being joined by the eco-friendly pilot development at Marien-höhe, the Graphisches Viertel project, in which an old printing works is being turned into nearly 100 rental apartments with underground parking, the Borntal-bogen estate and the new housing in the old town, right by the cathedral. These are just a few examples of what’s possible in Erfurt.
Erfurt citizens old and new are looking forward, with great anticipation, to the Federal Horticultural Show in 2021 (BUGA 2021). Not least because the plans include new green spaces and parks that will be accessible to all, even after the event, and will make whole areas of the city even more attractive.

ICE-City Erfurt is the name of the new area that is being created around Erfurt’s main train station. This state-of-the-art district, a place to work, live and do business, will benefit from high-grade real estate, large green spaces and, of course, excellent con-nections to regional and intercity trains and local public transport. Because of all this and more, ICE-City Erfurt offers prime opportunities for investors and developers looking for optimum transport connections and an attractive environment.

Industry
in Erfurt
Around 14,000 highly specialised com-panies, many of them SMEs, employ more than 140,000 people in Erfurt. They benefit from strong regional networks and perform with distinction in the domestic and international markets.
Particular sectors play a key role in Erfurt’s economy. In recent decades, for example, the city’s prime location in a reunified Ger-many and Europe has attracted numerous logistics companies to the area, making this one of the most important branches of industry in Erfurt.
Microelectronics were part of Erfurt’s eco-nomic profile for much of the second half of the 20th century and have given rise to a concentration of expertise in fields such as microtechnology, sensors and IT. South-east Erfurt, for example, is a hub for high-tech firms.
Media, particularly for children, is also big in Erfurt, and is centred on KiKA (the chil-dren’s TV channel of public broadcasters ARD and ZDF), the regional radio studios of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and the nearby Studiopark KinderMedienZentrum. This unique infrastructure is used by many up-and-coming companies.

Industrial and mechanical engineering has a long history in Erfurt. Specialist machinery has been manufactured in the city since the dawn of industrialisation, with the focus today on presses, pumps and generators. Commercial horticulture and food are also deeply rooted in the area. The focus is on cultivation and sales of flower and vegetable seeds, cuttings and cacti, and on production of fruit, vegetables and ornamental plants. And all kinds of delicious treats, from chocolate to pasta, begin their journey to consumers’ tables from Erfurt.
As an investment location, Erfurt has man-aged to strike a balance between tradi-tional manufacturing and the ambitious and innovative high-tech sector.
Not only is Erfurt the capital of the Free State of Thuringia, but it is also the admin-istrative, commercial and service centre. So it’s no surprise that the region’s biggest employers are the state of Thuringia and Erfurt city council, followed by Erfurt’s municipal utility company and the Helios Klinikum hospital.

The Sömmerda region
To the north of Erfurt, around the town of Sömmerda, an economic area with its own unique profile has become established. The company MDC Power in Kölleda, for example, can be reached in just under 30 minutes. This engine factory is a Daimler subsidiary and supplies more than 20 vehicle plants on five continents. Even closer to Erfurt is Gebesee, home of X-label, which makes products such as adhesive labels and shrink sleeves for the consumer goods industry.
Gewerbegebiet U.N.O.
The municipalities of Ulla, Nohra and Obergrunstedt give their name to the largest industrial district in the Weimarer Land region. Ideally located between Erfurt and Weimar, it is within easy reach of the autobahn, which is just one of the factors that benefits logistics company Axthelm & Zufall, the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s Erfurt branch and the ADAC Driv-ing Safety Centre for ThurDriv-ingia.
The Erfurt economic area
Erfurt currently boasts 14 fully equipped industrial parks that offer affordable options for companies in search of premises. In the surrounding region too, a number of industrial estates and business parks have sprung up in recent years that are attracting lots of successful businesses. These companies are proving that you don’t have to be based in the city to take advantage of all that it offers, for example choosing it as a location for events and training courses. They are also within easy commuting distance for people who choose to live in Erfurt itself.
Erfurter Kreuz
An economic hub in the making: the ‘Erfurter Kreuz’ lies at the heart of the Erfurt-Jena-Ilmenau technology triangle and, in combination with the industrial parks at Thörey, Arnstadt and Rudisleben, offers a total of six square kilometres of usable space. More than 8,000 people are employed by around 100 companies here. These include prestigious firms such as N3 Engine Overhaul Services, the largest and most modern operation of its kind in Europe, and Dachser, a provider of trans-port and logistics services. Also located within the Erfurter Kreuz are the Japanese-German turbocharger manufacturer IHI and the automotive supplier BorgWarner.

The quality of life on offer in Erfurt has real appeal: every year more than 10,000 people choose to base themselves in Erfurt, setting up home in one of the beautifully refurbished apartments in the old town or in the suburbs or in a modern townhouse.

Erfurt’s old town is a work of art in itself. Just ask anyone who’s walked across the Merchants’ Bridge and Long Bridge or through the St. Andrew’s quarter. The passion shown by the owners of the quirky shops, the inviting cafés, bars and restau-rants, the almost mediterranean feel of the summer evenings and the beautiful architecture: this is a city for people who
appreciate the finer things in life. Life pos-itively buzzes on Anger square. Formerly the main place where woad, wine and wool were traded in the city, Anger is now Erfurt’s main business and retail precinct and a paradise for shoppers. All tram lines intersect at the square, making it an acces-sible meeting place for young and old.

Public transport
Quick and convenient
People’s journeys to their places of work in Erfurt are not only especially short, but they can also often be completed by public transport – just like many other trips in the city. Trams criss-cross the city at intervals of ten minutes during the day and 20 minutes during the evening. 91 per cent of tram stops in Erfurt offer wheelchair access and 100 per cent of services run on green electricity, making this a particu-larly eco-friendly form of transport. All industrial estates and business parks are served by buses that connect them to central Erfurt, and, if there is sufficient demand, companies can request to have their own bus stop.

The ensemble of St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Church of St. Severus is the city’s most famous landmark. At their feet lies Domplatz square, the venue for all kinds of cultural events throughout the year. Erfurt Theatre’s Cathedral Steps Festival is a summer highlight for visitors from home and abroad. The two churches also provide a breathtaking backdrop for city festivals and concerts and for one of the prettiest Christmas markets anywhere in Germany.

Locals love nothing more than relaxing at the lakes in the north of Erfurt, in the Steigerwald Forest in the south and at the egapark in the west of the city centre. And in just 30 minutes they can be skiing or walking in the Thuringian Forest. Hainich National Park is also within easy reach of Erfurt, as is Weimar, the home of Ger-man Classicism. Whether you’re a lover of nature or have a passion for culture, you’ll find everything you could wish for in Erfurt and the surrounding region.
World Heritage in waiting.
Buried in 1349 and re-discovered in 1998, the Erfurt Treasure together with a host of architectural monuments bear witness to Jewish culture in the Middle Ages. The city is feverishly anticipating its inclusion on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Old Synagogue, in which the Erfurt Treasure is exhibited together with price-less manuscripts, has served as a museum since 2009. Throughout the year, a range of exhibitions at the Anger Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum and the Stadtmuseum attract visitors from all walks of life.Life in Erfurt
