Pollen allergy in relation to palynology and taxonomy of flowering plants at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Yelwa Campus Bauchi, Bauchi State

Statistical analysis showed that air pressure, temperature and wind are positively correlated, while rainfall and relative humidity are negatively correlated to pollen concentration within the period of sampling. Data collected from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Yelwa Campus Clinic Bay showed more allergies during month of December than any other month; which showed high distribution of pollen. This study has established that pollen occurrence are agents of certain allergies and should be stringently guarded against, especially in the months of October, November and December.

Hazard Analysis of Domestic Ground Water Sources in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU, Yelwa Campus), Bauchi Nigeria

Hazard Analysis of Domestic Ground Water Sources in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU, Yelwa Campus), Bauchi Nigeria

Abstract Ground water supply for domestic use accounts for a large proportion of domestic water use in the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) (Yelwa Campus). This implies that the sanitary quality of groundwater for domestic use in the institution is of paramount importance for the well being of the end users. The water quality of domestic groundwater sources in ATBU campus was analyzed by determining their physical, chemical and biological characteristics and ‘Hazard Analysis’ of the ground water sources for domestic use was determined based on the Water Safety Plan concept. Results obtained were compared to international water quality standards to identify the potential risks to various parameters and identify priority interventions to eliminate/ reduce contamination levels in the sources of water. Laboratory results showed that samples from a water source had Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Conductivity levels higher than values stated in the Drinking Water Standards. All other samples met the World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) guidelines for drinking water in terms of the physiochemical requirements. Total bacterial count obtained from two of the water sources was linked to the method of abstract of water. Results from the Hazard Analysis showed that five water sources monitored met all the requirements for drinking water quality, corrective measured were proffered for three sources on Well/ Borehole head tightness.

Low Prevalence of Asymptomatic Malaria in Pregnancy among Subjects Attending Antenatal Clinic at a Tertiary Hospital in Bauchi, Nigeria: A

prevalence, for instances, 2.0% in Lagos [18], 11% in Sokoto [19], 61.8% in Bauchi [20] and 99% in the Southeastern Nigeria [21]. Thus, it is difficult to extrapolate or estimate the burden of malaria in pregnancy in a region from data reported from other regions especially when the climatic factors and malaria control practices are not similar. To this background, the present study was designed to assess prevalence of malaria in pregnancy among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi and to evaluate malaria control practices among the subjects.

Efficacy of Some Botanicals for the Control of Wet Rot Disease on Mechanically Injured Sweet Potato Caused by Rhizopus Stolonifer in Bauchi State

Efficacy of Some Botanicals for the Control of Wet Rot Disease on Mechanically Injured Sweet Potato Caused by Rhizopus Stolonifer in Bauchi State

Abstract- Laboratory experiment was conducted in the Microbiology Laboratory of School of Science and Science Technology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Nigeria in May, 2012 to determine the antifungal effect of different concentrations of neem and moringa seed extracts on wet rot disease of sweet potato. Moringa and neem seed extracts each with four varying concentrations (30,60,90,and 120g/L) were evaluated along with carbendazim and untreated sweet potato serving as a control constittuted the treatments. The treatment were laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. The result showed that neem seed extact was significantly (P < 0.01) better than th moringa seed extract in controlling the disease. Treatment of the sweet potato with varying concentrations of neem and moringa seed extracts significantly (P < 0.01) inhibited radial mycilial growth of R. stolonifer and also reduce the weight loss of sweet potatoes caused by R. stolonifer compared with the control, except the application of 25g/1 of moringa seed extract. Preventive method of control significantly reduce the disease than the curative method. The effectiveness of the two plants seed extracts compared favourably with carbendzim. The study revealed that there exist a potential in natural plant products for the control of crop diseases, and if fully exploited, they can replace chemical pesticide in the control of crop diseses. It is therefore recommended that farmers should used 90g/1 or120g/1 as postharvest treatment for sweet potatoes before storage as control measure for R. stolonifer.

The media, politics and Boko blitz

The media, politics and Boko blitz

The surviving members of the group went underground, reorganised themselves and appointed a new leader Abubakar Shekau and spokesman Abu Ziad [and his regular representative Abul Qaqa, who was later arrested by the Nigeria’s secret police on 31 January 2012 (Idris 2012)]. Perhaps because of what happened to its former leaders, the group maintained strict secrecy about its new leadership — neither Shekau nor Ziad has ever made physical public appearance (only Shekau’s online video footage and images have so far been made public) — and displayed a surprising skill of employing the new media in their engagement with the public. Unlike in their earlier outings, when the authorities effectively used media against them, portraying them as Seventh Century savages who were anti-people and anti-modernity (Daily Trust 2009; Boyle 2009), the new Boko Haram is new media savvy, uploading their leader’s video speeches in the YouTube, releasing press statements online and organising mobile teleconferences with journalists (using concealed mobile phone numbers) to deliver their messages (Mshelizza 2011; Al-Jazeera 2012). But they are also deadly to journalists, having killed at least two of them. They killed Zakariya Isa, who was working for the government-owned Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Maiduguri, accusing him of spying for the state security service, and Enenche Akogwu, a correspondent of the privately-owned Channels Television, during their attacks in Kano (Gambrell 2012).
