It causes heavy loss of civilians. In this paper, we propose a vision-based fatigue detection system for bus driver monitoring, which is easy and flexible for deployment in buses and large vehicles. This project reduces those types of accidents. By using sensors and microcontroller we can detect driver fatigue state. In this project we are used mems, eye blink sensors Ardunio, relays as hard ware components and wireless data transfer technologies. In this project we have used Ardunio microcontroller. Microcontroller detects the sensor signal. Depending on the sensor values microcontroller turns on the buzzer if any accidents occurred then it sends the longitude, latitude positions of the location through GSM. The experimental output shows the advantages of the system on accuracy and robustness for the situations used for driving state monitoring.

The purpose for this paper is to investigate the correlation between thermal comfort and Malaysian bus driver’s performance and also to determine the response from bus drivers regarding the prevalence discomfort that they experience along their journey. In this study, descriptive or survey study was used. A questionnaire survey was conducted to examine the relationship between thermal comfort and environmental factors that influences the Malaysian bus drivers’ performance. In this study, focus are been given to Kuantan bus drivers with sample size approximately 260 drivers. The confidence level is 95% and degree of accuracy of 0.05. From this population, the sample was selected randomly. The descriptive analysis and correlation was used to analysis the raw data that get from feedback of survey. The ‘p’ value is less than the alpha value, and then there is evidence that the relationship is significant. Therefore, null hypothesis is rejected. Hence, it proved that there is statistically significant positive correlation between thermal comfort and Malaysian bus driver performance. Clearly that all of two parts of thermal comfort and environmental factors have significantly correlated on Malaysian bus driver performance.

Physical fatigue assessment for intrastate bus driver

Fatigue is considered a psychological or mental fatigue type characterized by subjective feelings of a disinclination to continue driving, drowsiness, fatigue, and deduction motivation. Bus drivers in Malaysia have been facing physical fatigue from driving for many years. Therefore, investigating the psychophysiological factor that related to fatigue could improve understanding and management for fatigue in the transport industry. Physical factors are divided by two parts that is upper and lower body. The objective of this study is to identify the cause, determine the level and analyze the physical fatigue on bus driver. There were two methods applied in this study, which were Modified Nordic Questionnaires that represent subjective measurement and surface Electromyography (sEMG) the objective measurement. Results from sEMG showed neck and upper back muscle groups leads to fatigue as the muscle is running out of energy based from the graph. Through the sEMG data, it can determine the level of physical fatigue on bus driver and analyzed the physical fatigue. Findings of this study from the questionnaire data analysis using the Statistical Package Social Science software, it is proved that physical fatigue really occurred to the intrastate bus driver. Results also showed significant correlation relationship between physical and mental.

Solving a large real world bus driver scheduling problem with a multi assignment based heuristic algorithm

Abstract: The bus driver scheduling problem (BDSP) under study consists in find- ing a set of duties that covers the bus schedule from a Brazilian public transportation bus company with the objective of minimizing the total cost. A deterministic 2-phase heuristic algorithm is proposed using multiple assignment problems that arise from a model based on a weighted multipartite graph. In the first phase, the algorithm con- structs an initial feasible solution by solving a number of assignment problems. In the second phase, the algorithm attempts to improve the solution by two different proce- dures. One procedure takes the whole set of duties and divides them in a set of partial duties which are recombined. The other procedure seeks to improve single long duties by eliminating the overtime time and inserting it into another duty. Computational tests are performed using large-scale real-world data with more than 2,300 tasks and random instances extracted from real data. Three different objective functions are an- alyzed. The overall results indicate that the proposed approach is competitive to solve large BDSP.

Drowsiness Detection Of Bus Driver Fatigue Based On Robust Visual Analysis Of Eye State

Cheng et. al. [25] presented a nonintrusive drowsiness recognition method using eye tracking and image processing. To address the problems caused by changes in illumination and driver posture, a robust eye detection algorithm is introduced. Six measurements are measured with eyelid closure percentage, total closure length, and blink rate, average eye-opening level, opening eye velocity, and closing eye velocity. Such measures are combined using the Fisher’s linear discriminate functions using a step-by-step approach to reduce correlations and extract an independent index. Results in driving simulator experiments with six participants show the efficacy of this video-based drowsiness recognition process, which provided 86 percent accuracy. Zoroofi et. al. [16] presented a new module for automatic driver drowsiness detection based on visual information and Artificial Intelligence. The objective of this system is to locate, track and assess both the face and eyes of the driver in order to calculate a drowsiness index to avoid accidents. Haar-like features and AdaBoost classifiers perform both face and eye detection. They propose a new approach, which is a combination of detection and object tracking, to achieve better accuracy in face tracking. The proposed method of face tracking also has the ability to self-correct. Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is used to extract eye characteristics after the eye region is found. An SVM classifier was trained to perform eye status analysis using these features. A drowsy individual was filmed while his EEG signals were taken to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. In this video, they are able to track the face with a 100% accuracy and detect eye blinking with a 98.4% accuracy. Piloting smart safe school bus: exploration of security gains from implementation of a driver support system, additional technical equipment and intelligent bus stops

The four underlying assumptions for the driver support system were all explored. However, this was a pilot study raising questions to be evaluated and solved in future studies, for example misuse and unintended use of the system. One tool, in this case the driver support system, can, most likely, not solve every situation. A holistic approach may be preferable. Parents, bus drivers, munici- pality should be educated within traffic safety thinking, in order to increase the understanding of children ’ s needs and limitations. Further studies are needed that apply such a holistic approach with focus on better ways to sign the bus and traffic safety education on the use of support systems for bus drivers, children, parents and relevant persons within municipality. Within the 7th Framework, the EU- project SAFEWAY2SCHOOL (FP7-RTD-1-233967; http:// safeway2school.eu/) takes into account most of these issues. The project applies a holistic approach including bus stop inventory tool, education and training, bus driver support with rerouting, real time reallocation, signs on busses, signs at bus stops, and communication between children and the buses, bus stops and the relevant stake- holders on a municipality level. Also crash statistics, regulations and traffic laws are taken into account. Pilot trials will be performed at four different sites in Europe, testing the holistic approach in different ways.

Optimal Static State Estimation Using hybrid Particle Swarm Differential Evolution Based Optimization

In this paper, hybrid PSO-DE based SE algorithm has been proposed to find the minimum value of fitness function of the SE problem. The proposed method has been tested on IEEE 5-bus, 14-bus, 30-bus, 57-bus and 118-bus standard test systems and 11-bus and 13-bus ill-conditioned test systems extensively for different normal operating conditions and various combinations of bad-data measurement conditions to verify their efficien- cies. The results are compared with the same of the stan- dard WLS technique and the GPSO method. From the comparison of results, it has been observed that (i) the PSO-DE based state estimator minimizes the fitness function far better than both GPSO based estimator and WLS based estimator; (ii) the frequency of occur- rence of the minimum value near the mean value of the solutions for 100 runs of each algorithm is more in case of the PSO-DE based SE than the GPSO based SE and WLS-SE and (iii) the error analysis study among the three techniques, using AASE(k) and J(k) index, proves the superiority of the PSO-DE based technique over the other two. Comparing all performances, it may thus be concluded that the PSO-DE based state estimation tech- nique shows the best efficiency in state estimation analy- sis with high accuracy.

Commercial Bus Accident Analysis through Accident Database

This paper presents discussion on bus accident data for period of 2003 – 2012 retrieved from Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (MIROS). A statistical analysis was conducted to gain insight into the trend, factors affecting accident occurrence and severity of commercial buses. 47% of cases investigated by MIROS between 2007 and 2010 resulted in fatalities, with fatality rate of 1-3 persons being the most frequent while accident with minor injuries having at least 22%. Understanding these factors can help to bring forth realistic strategies to improve the safety of these bus services. Express and stage buses have the highest rate of accident and causalities by road. Express roads record more accident compared to other categories of road. The major cause of mechanical failure among all types of buses was identified to be brake failure with about 56% of the total mechanical failure, and about 52% of all commercial buses were involved in traffic accident with a yearly means of 3.8 accidents per commercial bus (based on commercial bus involved in accident). This knowledge is useful for stake holders and policy makers in transportation industries to improve road safety and reduce accidents.
