Terraced Landscapes and Hydrogeological Risk. Effects of Land Abandonment in Cinque Terre (Italy) during Severe Rainfall Events

The first descriptions of Cinque Terre date from the early fourteenth century. Jacopo Bracelli, chancellor and historiographer of the Genoese Republic was the first to provide a fairly accurate description of this area of Liguria, in his Descriptio orae Ligusticae (1448). “Then along the coast stand five lands almost at equal distances from one another, which are Monterosso, Vulnezia, now vulgarly known as Vernazza, Cornelia, Manarola and Rio Maggiore, famous not only in Italy but also among the French and the English for the excellence of their wine”. These five towns were spontaneously associated under a single name, both because of the quality of their wine and because they all grew grapes in the same way, on terraces that left a strong mark on their landscape and sharply distinguished it from the rest of the extreme versant of Liguria. Thanks to the foundation of these municipalities and the cessation of the incursions of Saracen pirates, both the settlements and the crops began to expand along the coast and inland. The terraces became a collective resource to be defended, as attested by prescriptions in municipal statutes, such as the one of Celle in 1414, forbidding the taking of stones from terrace walls or the tilling of the soil too close to the walls at risk of damaging them.

recommended to visit the remains of the 13th-century port, the church of Saint Andrew, and the historical center. From Levanto, you have two options that both showcase the Cinque Terre’s fabulous scenery. For the moderate walk, you reach the castle of Levanto and start off on the path to Punta Mesco, which eventually levels off along an easy stretch with spectacular views. You then have another rigorous ascent over rough steps through oak forest, followed by a much easier stretch through a pine forest, culminating at the promontory of Punta Mesco. At 1,000 feet, your hard work is

Fish assemblage of the marine protected area of Cinque Terre (NW Mediterranean Sea): First characterization and assessment by visual census

Fish assemblage of the marine protected area of Cinque Terre (NW Mediterranean Sea): First characterization and assessment by visual census

The collected data help to describe the fish assemblage of Cinque Terre MPA. The fish fauna is found to be poorer in species than the Marine Protected Area of Portofino (94 fish species [35]), located only 50 km west from this site. This strong difference could be explained by the strong geomorphologic differences, the richer benthic habitats of the Portofino Promontory [27, 36], and the higher sedimentation rate in Cinque Terre [37].

Cinque Terre Frequently asked questions

Cinque Terre Frequently asked questions

The best way to visit Cinque Terre is by train. The line between La Spezia and Levanto follows the coastal line, although you do not see much of its beauty, as a large part of the line is going through tunnels. Every village in Cinque Terre has its station close to the center of the town. One exception : Corniglia, where you have to climb 382 steps to reach the village. There are about 2 trains per hour. The average price between two villages is 2 EUR.

The characterisation of an exhumed high-temperature paleo-geothermal system on Terre-de-Haut Island (the Les Saintes archipelago, Guadeloupe) in terms of clay minerals and petrophysics

The characterisation of an exhumed high-temperature paleo-geothermal system on Terre-de-Haut Island (the Les Saintes archipelago, Guadeloupe) in terms of clay minerals and petrophysics

archipelago), located 12 km south of Basse-Terre, is described in the literature as exhib- iting an exhumed paleo-geothermal system (Jacques and Maury 1988a, b; Verati et al. 2016), giving access to a sub-horizontal 2D cross-section into the system. The combi- nation of the geology of both sites might provide a 3D view of a geothermal system to better understand its fluid pathways. The mineralogy of a hydrothermally altered area on Terre-de-Haut has already been investigated (Jacques and Maury 1988a, b; Verati et al. 2016), but the authors did not focus on clay minerals, which are well known for being good indicators of hydrothermal alterations (Patrier et al. 2003; Mas et al. 2006; Bouchot et al. 2010). This present study focuses on the nature and distribution of clay minerals on Terre-de-Haut to propose a 3D conceptual model of geothermal systems of the Guade- loupe archipelago.

Changes in Physical Properties of Red Soils "Terre de Barre” in South of Togo Under Different Compost Application Doses

Changes in Physical Properties of Red Soils "Terre de Barre” in South of Togo Under Different Compost Application Doses

soil bulk density while increasing soil total porosity, soil moisture content and water infiltration rate in red soils “Terre de barre” in south of Togo. The results revealed that the compost doses of 20, 30 and 40 t ha -1 improved proportionally the soil parameters studied. These results suggest that the application of household waste compost at the minimum dose of 20 t ha -1 on red soils "Terre de Barre” in southern Togo could improve significantly their physical properties. It can be deduced that composting is a suitable technology for the recycling of household urban wastes and a mean for soil physical properties improvement.

Two independent methods for mapping the grounding line of an outlet glacier – an example from the Astrolabe Glacier, Terre Adélie, Antarctica

Two independent methods for mapping the grounding line of an outlet glacier – an example from the Astrolabe Glacier, Terre Adélie, Antarctica

As part of a collaborative project with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Warm Ice Sounding Explorer, WISE) and The University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (Investigating Cryospheric Evolution through Collaborative Aerogeophys- ical Profiling, ICECAP; Young et al., 2011), several air- borne geophysical campaigns have been undertaken during the 2008/2009, 2009/2010 and 2011/2012 seasons in or- der to characterize some of the large outlet glaciers of the Wilkes Land–Terre Adélie sector of East Antarctica. Some of the flights were dedicated to the Astrolabe Glacier over which bedrock topography was measured with a combina- tion of medium- (2.5 MHz) (MF) and very high- (60 MHz) frequency (VHF) high-power sounding radars mounted on either a DHC-8 Twin Otter or a DC-3T Basler aircraft. Fig- ure 7 shows one of the MF radar profiles obtained over the glacier along the Y1–Y2 profile as represented in Fig. 8. A treatment similar to that applied to ground radar data was per- formed and allowed for similar theoretical hydrostatic floata- tion profiles as those depicted in Fig. 6.
