Infusing Photonics to Increase Enrollment in Electronics Engineering Technology

Most community colleges spend very little in the marketing of their electronics programs and do not have a professional marketing person or even a marketing department. The marketing effort in most of the colleges with enrollment problems consists of creating unattractive, single color brochures that are stacked up in a few display areas around the college. In some colleges an additional effort is made to take these brochures to different area high schools and distribute them to students. Community colleges will seldom place ads on television or on the radio for marketing programs and recruiting students. In contrast to this, private electronics colleges advertise on television regularly on prime-time, and on the radio more frequently. Even though the cost of attending these private colleges is usually more than four times the cost of a community college, the private schools have not experienced as dramatic a decrease as community colleges have. The reason is the intense and effective marketing effort of the proprietary colleges. These for-profit colleges have a coordinated marketing campaign consisting of attractive colorful print publications, professionally produced interactive websites, and trained marketing people who are paid well only if they produce results. Community colleges can stand against this professionally organized campaign of the proprietary schools by selling their strong points, which are: much lower cost to the student, better equipped labs, better educated faculty which typically has higher scholarly credentials, and accreditation by high caliber accreditation boards. Interactive Learning Tools for Electrical Engineering and Electronics Course

The article reports the results of one of the first attempts to elaborate and implement original student centred interactive learning tools for higher and vocational schools in Latvia. By now Ē. Priednieks has developed more than 20 Windows applications in the subject area „Electrical Engineering and Electronics” (EE&E): laboratory practice simulations, circuit calculation programs, and learning exercises. The learning material presented in CD ROM form includes themes of electrical circuits, electrical machines and basic electronics. Each learning tool contains EXE-file supported by help files with operation instructions, theory, laboratory practice assignment or exercises. The further development of the learning tools was supported by the Leonardo da Vinci Community Vocational Training Action Programme. The learning tools were also translated and now the CD is available in English, Dutch, Estonian, Italian, Latvian, and Lithuanian versions.

Currently FPL hires Bachelor engineering candidates primarily from UF. FIU candidates do not pass the FPL nuclear entry test. FPL would be interested in enrolling employees in the BAS at MDC since it would be more economical for FPL.” Miami Dade College has a close partnership with FPL, having recently developed an AS degree in Electrical Power Technology pipeline partnership tailored specifically to FPL’s needs and qualification exams. The proposed MDC BAS EET curriculum was developed with direct industry input from FPL and other local employers, and will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge required by industry for entry-level electronics engineering positions.

Sridhar Chitta graduated from Regional Engg. College, Tiruchirapalli (now NITT) with a B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering (Madras University) and obtained M.E. in Control Systems in Electrical Engineering from the University of Bombay (V. J. T. Institute) in 1980. He has over 22 years of experience in industry and worked as a development engineer of controls for large airconditioning systems, material handling equipment, Special Purpose Machines, CNC drilling machines and Industrial material handling robots in India, the Middle East and Canada. After returning to India he joined as faculty in a private engineering college and shared his rich industrial experience among peers and students for more than a decade. He is pursuing a Ph.D degree in the area of Large-Scale Control Systems. He has authored the book Circuit Process Mechanism published by IK International, New Delhi and is currently authoring an expanded edition Fundamentals of Electric Theory and Circuits. He retired as Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electronics and Communication Engg. in an engineering college in Hyderabad, Telangana, India.
