Quick response is particularly important in highly dynamic cloud environments. Traditional intrusion detection systems (IDS) mainly focus on detecting suspicious activities and are limited to simple actions such as disabling a switch port or notifying (sending email) to a system administrator. SDN opens the possibility of taking complex actions such as changing the path of suspicious activities in order to isolate them from known trusted communication. Research will focus on how to recast existing IDS mechanisms and algorithms in SDN contexts, and development of new algorithms to take full advantage of multiple points of action. For example, as each switch can be used to detect and act on attacks, [16] has shown the improvement of different traffic anomaly detection algorithms (Threshold Random Walk with Credit Based rate limiting, Maximum Entropy, network traffic anomaly detection based on packet bytes, and rate limiting) using Openflow and NOX by placing detectors closer to the edge of the network (home or small business networks instead of the ISP) while maintaining the line rate performance.

CORBA is a specification introduced by the Object Management Group (OMG) for providing cross- platform and cross-language interoperability among distributed components. The specification was originally designed to provide an interoperation standard that could be effectively used at the indus- trial level. The current release of the CORBA specification is version 3.0 and currently the technology is not very popular, mostly because the development phase is a considerably complex task and the interoperability among components developed in different languages has never reached the proposed level of transparency. A fundamental component in the CORBA architecture is the Object Request Broker (ORB), which acts as a central object bus. A CORBA object registers with the ORB the inter- face it is exposing, and clients can obtain a reference to that interface and invoke methods on it. The ORB is responsible for returning the reference to the client and managing all the low-level operations required to perform the remote method invocation. To simplify cross-platform interoperability, inter- faces are defined in Interface Definition Language (IDL), which provides a platform-independent specification of a component. An IDL specification is then translated into a stub-skeleton pair by spe- cific CORBA compilers that generate the required client (stub) and server (skeleton) components in a specific programming language. These templates are completed with an appropriate implementation in the selected programming language. This allows CORBA components to be used across different runtime environment by simply using the stub and the skeleton that match the development language used. A specification meant to be used at the industry level, CORBA provides interoperability among different implementations of its runtime. In particular, at the lowest-level ORB implementations com- municate with each other using the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP), which standardizes the inter- actions of different ORB implementations. Moreover, CORBA provides an additional level of abstraction and separates the ORB, which mostly deals with the networking among nodes, from the Portable Object Adapter (POA), which is the runtime environment in which the skeletons are hosted and managed. Other approaches model collaboration between Internet of Things (IoTs) entities [11]. For collabora- tions, devices are abstracted as device-oriented Web services which are composed in process models. Further, this approach does not include aspects like temporal or local validity, which we address. The “pervasive computing supported collabora- tive work” model (PCSCW) aims to seamlessly integrate smart devices to enable the collaboration of users [12]. A task model defines collaboration processes that make use of resources defined in a resource model, under consideration of device collaboration rules [13]. These rules define behavior of resources within a collab- oration, for example, to switch the means of data communication given a certain threshold is reached. Despite not targeting opportunistic collaborations specifi- cally, PCSCW’s approach is very similar to our perception of collaboration mod- eling and did and will continue to influence our work.

With all due respect to wired.com, I’ll be amazed if this column survives to 2022 without my intervention” (ibid.). There are some efforts, primarily by governments, to archive and preserve flies. The most notable of these may be at the U.S. Library of Congress, which, among other things, is archiving the massive database of Twitter postings. These are all important activities, but they are isolated and much more data disappears than is preserved. Of course, one can argue, there is a great deal of digital content that is not worth paying to preserve. Society has survived in the past without carrying forward from generation to generation the entire weight of the historical record. Nevertheless, since most of that record is now digital, is it not worthwhile to develop strategies to preserve at least some of it in a systematic fashion?
