Full-reference video quality metric assisted the development of no-reference bitstream video quality metrics for real-time network monitoring

High-quality video is being increasingly delivered over Internet Protocol networks, which means that network operators and service providers need methods to measure the quality of experience (QoE) of the video services. In this paper, we propose a method to speed up the development of no-reference bitstream objective metrics for estimating QoE. This method uses full-reference objective metrics, which makes the process significantly faster and more convenient than using subjective tests. In this process, we have evaluated six publicly available full-reference objective metrics in three different databases, the EPFL-PoliMI database, the HDTV database, and the Live Video Wireless database, all containing transmission distortions in H.264 coded video. The objective metrics could be used to speed up the development process of no-reference real-time video QoE monitoring methods that are receiving great interest from the research community. We show statistically that the full-reference metric Video Quality Metric (VQM) performs best considering all the databases. In the EPFL-PoliMI database, SPATIAL MOVIE performed best and TEMPORAL MOVIE performed worst. When transmission distortions are evaluated, using the compressed video as the reference provides greater accuracy than using the uncompressed original video as the reference, at least for the studied metrics. Further, we use VQM to train a lightweight no-reference bitstream model, which uses the packet loss rate and the interval between instantaneous decoder refresh frames, both easily accessible in a video quality monitoring system.

Still images such as test patterns and high-resolution pho- tos are usually used to assess the resolution of displays. However, the SRR function on an HDTV set is sup- posed to work on digital broadcasting content, not on still photos. Since SRR cannot improve resolution with a single image such as a test pattern, we have to use video sequences taken with a HDTV video camera. As described in Section 2, the lengths were from 10 to 15 s. The test video sequences were selected from terrestrial HDTV digital broadcasting content in Japan. Content was recorded on a BD at HDTV resolution, and the repeat function of the BD player was used to show the sequences to the observers during the assessment. A limited amount of recorded broadcasting content was deemed appropri- ate for this assessment since most of it did not show any differences in the pre-assessment involving several observers. BT.500 recommends using at least four video sequences. Five sequences were selected. The test video sequences are shown in Figures 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The cir- cles in each figure are high-resolution areas that were the objectives of the assessments.

An important consideration in a recording apparatus is camera choice. Sufficient spatial and temporal resolutions are essential for tracking animals and capturing behaviors that include rapid movements. The Nyquist – Shannon sampling theorem from digital signal processing produces a useful rule of thumb for the minimum sampling rate required: double the rate of the maximum frequency of a signal (Shannon, 1949). Consider lunging behavior in the fly, in which the complete sequence of rearing, snapping and grabbing the opponent takes ∼ 100 ms (Hoyer et al., 2008). To sample at least once during a lunge event, one would need to sample at one frame every 50 ms. However, to accurately determine the timing of the start or end, or to detect the ‘ snapping ’ , which can take <10 ms, much higher frame rates are required. The revolution in low-cost, high-quality image sensors, driven by demand for better smart phone cameras, has benefited research equipment and provided a huge range of cameras to choose from. Currently, cameras fall into three general categories: streaming cameras with standard interfaces such as FireWire, USB3 or GigE, streaming cameras with specialized interfaces such as Camera Link, and cameras with onboard storage for high-speed applications. If we consider a 1 megapixel image, the recording rates of these cameras translate to frame rates ranging from ∼ 25 to ∼ 7000 frames s −1 , with equipment costs ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars (Table 1). Thus, an important factor in choosing a frame rate and resolution is the size of the generated files: the cost of storing video data can now quickly dwarf the initial cost of equipment. Therefore, there is a balance between collecting data at sufficiently high spatial and temporal rates and not collecting, storing and analyzing unnecessarily large data sets. Compression and dimensionality reduction of video data by both general-purpose video-compression algorithms and specialized methods such as tracking can help reduce storage demands. Important trade-offs to consider when selecting a video compression method are the loss of video quality and the effects of this loss on downstream computer vision-based analyses, the decrease in file size, the speed of compression and decompression, and the compatibility of the video codec with other parts of the analysis pipeline.

Initially, the WG details the desired features of the HQVS and establishes a set of network requirements, including the need to use research and education networks for the service, and the available bandwidth needed for institutions, among others. The main goal is that institutions participate with a high-quality network with the required quality of service. Another work area is the Inter-regional Certification Programme (ICP). The ICP will be designed to ensure quality and recognition for participants. The participant institutions will be able to achieve quality by knowing the ICP procedures on how to improve their videoconferencing infrastructure, and by receiving the recognition of a branded model that will award ICP recognition as validation of their network quality. The WP3 work will include the integration of directories so that users can identify resources available across the regions. There will also be important integration work carried out on dialling systems. The above will be carried out through the development of a Latin American gatekeeper and its connection to the European eduCONF service. The goal is to provide a unique and easy way to use the service across both regions. The scope also defines the establishment of a support network agreement, in order to work on common service procedures towards the possible integration of help desks and support. Finally, the work group states that the system will be standard-based and open, so the service evolution will be done in collaboration with the participant institutions.

The performance of the predictive quality assessment model depends on several characteristics. First, as we introduced in the previous Section, different kinds of ML approaches have their own advantages and disadvantages. This circumstance makes them better or worse fitted to model the problem at hand. For example, while a Fast Forward neural network seems to be the best option to model a system with all the ground truth data, it becomes unfit for a scalable solution (where the training samples need to be labeled before generating the model). The second characteristic is the utilized benchmark. This includes two things: a) the ground truth quality used (in the case of a SL approach); and b) the quality measurement used to assess the accuracy of the model. Third, selecting the features that better characterize the video streams, are effective in the ML training process (in the server) and, ultimately, generate an accurate quality metric (in the clients) is an important decision. In order to keep the calculation of the input features as fast and simple as possible, the predictive QoE models tend to use low-complexity NR features (which can be calculated in real time and with only the client material provided) to input to their models.

We present the methodology and analyze the results of measurement study of real-time video streaming experiments. First, we answer the question as to what is the expected video streaming quality over residential links. We show that video streaming quality can range from ‘poor’ to ‘good’, and then examine the factors that contribute to video quality deteriora- tion. We study the properties of wireless and end-to-end links in residential networks in terms of the bandwidth available for streaming, loss and latency that packets experience and the effect on streaming quality. We find the uplink bandwidth in broadband networks is typically insufficient to stream HD video streams. Further, the high latency that can be experienced on these networks can make real-time communication infeasible. The measurements presented in this work can serve as a guide on what video resolutions will be supported, and the buffer sizes needed for residential real-time video applications.

is a measure of end-to-end performance at the service layer and QoE takes into account how well a service meets the needs of customers. Whereas QoS is network centric. Khirman et al [19] identified that the fundamental assumption behind the traditional QoS approach is that the measured quality of service is closely related to the quality of experience (QoE) for the end-user. QoE as defined by ETSI TISPAN TR 102 479, is the user perceived experience of what is being presented by a communication ser- vice or application user interface [20]. This definition itself suggests some factors that influence the experience of a typical user. We note that some of this is highly sub- jective and takes into account many different factors beyond simple quality of service considerations, such as service pricing, the viewing environment, stress level and so on. According to ETSI TR 102 643 QoE is defined as “A measure of user performance based on both objective and subjective psychological measures of using an ICT service or product” whereas according to P.10/G.100 it’s defined as the overall acceptability of an application or service, as perceived subjectively by the end user. QoSE (QoS ex- perienced/perceived by customer/user) ITU-T E.800 A statement expressing the level of quality that customers/users believe they have experienced. QoE definitions are evolving as research continues for understanding it and its impact on how the next gen- eration networks will be designed or planned. The future research directions identified by the white paper published during a seminar entitled ”QoE: From User Perception to Instrumental Metrics” held at Schloss Dagstuhl May 1st to 4th, 2012 highlights the importance of multidisplinary research for Quality of Experience (QoE) [21] [22]. As QoE is user focused and encompass acceptability, delight and performance, it is seems that it will become the key role is service provisioning and management. Dagstuhl work also commented on migration of focus from QOS to QoE and the challenges of bringing together the user, technology, and business. A major challenge is that the qualitative user perception needs to be translated into quantitative input which should further be used for dimensioning, managing and controlling network and the deployed services. Dagstuhl paper also proposed the use of feedback relating to service accep- tance, usage, cost, and quality for evaluating QoE. The research generated during and after the seminar is helping develop standards for QoE and for developing metrics and measurement techniques aimed at improving QoE prediction.
