library’s open scholarly works repository, is approved by the Emory University Faculty Council to accept only peer-reviewed journal articles. Therefore, the library is exploring alternative ways of providing infrastructure for data sharing and preservation, such as collaborating with the Georgia Institute of Technology to participate in a multi- institutional pilot implementation of the Dataverse Network, led by the Southeastern Universities Research Association. Members of the RDM working group have primarily utilized grassroots approaches to developing and marketing their services, and any extension of the library’s current level of support is limited by having only one staff member whose time is fully committed to RDM. However, recent changes in library administration, the absorption of the Electronic Data Center into the new hybrid Center for Digital Scholarship, and a new top-down directive to provide recommendations for RDM support, including a formally chartered RDM working group with broader representation from Emory Libraries and Information Technology, present new

OSoMe: the IUNI observatory on social media

OSoMe: the IUNI observatory on social media

The study of social phenomena is becoming increasingly reliant on big data from online social networks. Broad access to social media data, however, requires software development skills that not all researchers possess. Here we present the IUNI Observa- tory on Social Media, an open analytics platform designed to facilitate computational social science. The system leverages a historical, ongoing collection of over 70 billion public messages from Twitter. We illustrate a number of interactive open-source tools to retrieve, visualize, and analyze derived data from this collection. The Observatory, now available at osome.iuni.iu.edu, is the result of a large, six-year collaborative effort coordinated by the Indiana University Network Science Institute.

Balanced scorecard in higher education institutions: what should be consider?

Balanced scorecard in higher education institutions: what should be consider?

Strategic planning should take into account the current changes in today environment that is very competitive and dynamic. Here, BSC is one of the most appropriate performance management systems that can measure the performance from the various aspects including a financial, customer, employee and internal business processes perspective. BSC aims to provide a comprehensive framework for translating the objectives and strategy of a university into a set of performance measures that are easily understood. In the meantime, BSC is a set of measurement systems that provide a comprehensive view and complete information about the current organization performance to the top management. Indeed, the BSC concept is very useful in order to establish and identify the goals and strategy of the organization.

The vertically integrated projects (VIP) program : leveraging faculty research interests to transform undergraduate STEM education

The vertically integrated projects (VIP) program : leveraging faculty research interests to transform undergraduate STEM education

The  VIP  Program  was  launched  at  Purdue  University  in  2001  with  the  creation  of  the  first   VIP   team,   the   eStadium   team.   VIP   was   designed   to   improve   upon   its   predecessor,   the   Engineering  Projects  in  Community  Service  (EPICS)  Program  [3].    Both  of  these  programs   at   Purdue   used   large-‐scale,   long-‐term   teams   composed   of   undergraduates   that   could   register  for  credit  for  up  to  three  years.  The  difference  between  them  was  the  context  of  the   projects.  In  EPICS,  the  teams  designed,  developed  and  deployed  products  and  systems  for   non-‐profit   organizations   in   the   local   community.   In   VIP,   the   teams   design,   develop   and   deploy   products   and   systems   that   assist   faculty   and   their   graduate   students   with   their   research.  The  hypothesis  was  that  more  faculty  would  be  willing  to  advise  teams  for  many   years   if   doing   so   would   benefit   their   research   activity,   for   which   they   are   regularly   rewarded.
