Elements of baroque performance style applied to a popular piece of J. S. Bach

Elements of baroque performance style applied to a popular piece of J. S. Bach

We in the twenty-first century are in an enviable position: we have more or less equal and unprecedented access to and are able to enjoy a wide variety of musical styles and genres from the earliest stages of civilization to the present day, from all regions of the globe, from many nationalities and cultures. Until the late eighteenth century, only the latest music was heard, composed for use for a specific occasion and seldom aired again. The rediscovery and subsequent promotion of the music of J. S. Bach by Mendelssohn and others in the early to mid-nineteenth century created a new situation in which the music of the past was heard alongside music of the present; throughout the twentieth century the balance tipped more and more in favour of the music of the past. The late twentieth century witnessed the rise of “authentic” performance practices with original instrument groups. Related scholarship has given rise to debates – sometimes quite heated – about how to interpret and apply the source materials to achieve an “authentic” performance. Some endeavours have been made to inform the younger generation of musicians, such as the editing work of, for example Geoffrey Lancaster for the List C pieces in the AMEB Pianoforte Series 12 books. At the very least, the approach to Baroque and Classical works has been enlivened and enabled to break free of the early twentieth century performance style of these works which we would now consider to be inappropriate – even turgid and uninspiring. “We must approach the great masterpieces by pushing aside the lush growth of traditional experience and interpretation, and once again begin from the beginning”. (Harnoncourt, p. 44)

Elements of baroque performance style applied to a popular piece of J. S. Bach

Bach (p. 42) relates how his “deceased father” (i. e., J. S. Bach) had heard great men who employed their thumbs only when large stretches made it necessary, but because he lived in a time of rapid musical change, he devised a more comprehensive fingering system, especially to increase the role of the thumb and use the fingers “as nature intended”. It would appear that “early” fingering accepts that fingers are not and do not perform uniformly. There was a concept from the sixteenth century of “good” and “bad” fingers (Ferguson, p. 67). In the mid- eighteenth century it was acknowledged that “the keyboardist cannot always expect the degree of clarity from a weaker finger that a stronger finger achieves quite readily, for clarity is principally won through uniform pressure”. (Bach, p. 69) Nevertheless, the importance of a natural hand position and relaxed muscles was recognized. Bach warns (p. 69) that if proper attention is not devoted to fingering, the player’s hands “must be continually twisted and distorted . . . the remaining fingers lose their natural position and must be forced into use. There is, consequently, no chance to loosen or relax the muscles, and the fingers stiffen.”

Automatically detecting key modulations in J.S. Bach chorale recordings

Automatically detecting key modulations in J.S. Bach chorale recordings

This paper describes experiments to automatically detect key and modulation in J.S. Bach chorale recordings. Tran- scribed audio is processed into vertical notegroups, and the groups are automatically assigned chord labels in accor- dance with Sch¨onberg’s definition of diatonic triads and sevenths for the 24 major and minor modes. For compar- ison, MIDI representations of the chorales are also pro- cessed. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are used to de- tect key and key change in the chord sequences, based upon two approaches to chord and key transition representations. Our initial hypothesis is that key and chord values which are derived from pre-eminent music theory will produce the most accurate models of key and modulation. The mu- sic theory models are therefore tested against models em- bodying Krumhansl’s data resulting from perceptual exper- iments about chords and harmonic relations. We conclude that the music theory models produce better results than the perceptual data. The transcribed audio gives encour- aging results, with the key detection outputs ranging from 79% to 97% of the MIDI ground truth results.

A Study of J.S. Bach s Toccata in F Major, BWV 540. Chris Eads

A Study of J.S. Bach s Toccata in F Major, BWV 540. Chris Eads

J.S. Bach, born in 1685, is considered one of Western music’s greatest composers. However, this was not the case in his lifetime. Even by his death in 1750, his music wasn’t highly regarded. Rather, it was his skills as an organist that brought him what fame and success he had. It was not until early in the 19 th century that his compositions garnered significant interest, partially through the work of Felix Mendelssohn in what came to be known as the first early music revival.

j.s. bach goldberg variations geoffrey madge

The Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach were first published in 1741. Bach wrote the work for the brilliant harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg and it remains the great masterpiece of the variation form, indeed one of the major works ever written for the keyboard. Only the Diabelli Variations op. 120 by Ludwig van Beethoven are of the same stature in the keyboard literature. It is one of the most challenging works, musically and technically very demanding as it was written for a keyboard with two manuals. We can assume that Johann Gottlieb Goldberg must have been an incredible musician to inspire Bach to write this work.

"Musical Perfection": Reflecting on the Contemporary and Timeless Bach Chorales

"Musical Perfection": Reflecting on the Contemporary and Timeless Bach Chorales

Worship leaders often use contemporary musical styles in the belief that the gospel can be more easily communicated to worshipers through music that is familiar. But the gospel is not only about the familiar. It also brings a message that is profoundly unfamiliar, countercultural, and different from anything we can imagine. No style of music, historic or contemporary, can completely encompass this countercultural reality. Music from the past, however, helps to protect us from ourselves, keeps us from being overly insular, and gives us insights our period cannot supply. A healthy church employs the music of its own time as well as music from the past. . . . J. S. Bach composed some of the best music of all time, much of it for the worship of the church. Why avoid such a treasure? (2007)

Historically informed Bach performance in Canberra: Problems and progress

Historically informed Bach performance in Canberra: Problems and progress

Examination of performances of works by J.S. Bach in Australia’s capital city over its first century uncovers the musical difficulties faced by the community as it developed from an isolated country town to today’s modern city. Organ works were heard in the region’s churches before the city took root—a transcription of the well-known “G  String Aria” was played, for example, at an organ recital in St. Saviour’s Cathedral, Goulburn, in 1911 1 —but it would take many years following the naming of the

Bach Flower Remedies for psychological problems and pain: a systematic review

Bach Flower Remedies for psychological problems and pain: a systematic review

Bach's 38 flower remedies each address one of the seven psychological causes of illness: fear, uncertainty, insuffi- cient interest in present circumstances, loneliness, over- sensitivity to influences and ideas, despondency or despair and overcare for the welfare of others.[7] The indi- vidual patient is prescribed particular remedies depending on the acute problem at hand, which should be individu- ally tailored and adjusted during the course of therapy, typically over weeks to months.[1,7] For example, the flower 'impatiens' is used for impatience and irritability, 'mimulus' for fear of known things, shyness, and timidity, and 'olive' for those that are drained of energy.[7] In addi- tion, some BFRs are categorized as "type" remedies and are specific to a certain character trait or disposition.[1] A person who suffers from overwhelming guilt might be offered pine as a type remedy, and chronically indecisive people could benefit from Scleranthus.[1] Three BFRs are helpful to unblock the energy flow in patients without obvious symptoms: Wild Oat, Holly, and Star of Bethle- hem.[7] Because the relief of anxiety is a major factor in pain relief, proponents of BFRs have suggested that BFRs also have the potential to function as a therapeutic agent for pain.[8] "Rescue Remedy", also known as "Five Flower Remedy", is the only combination of BFRs determined by Bach himself and functions as an all purpose emergency agent in situations of acute anxiety or distress. It contains a mixture of star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbella- tum), rock rose (Helianthemum nummularium), impa- tiens (Impatiens glandulifera), cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera), and clematis (Clematis vitalba). [1,3,5,7] Res- cue remedy is recommended as a first aid preparation for situations where acute stress is likely to occur.

Multiple kernel learning has been of great interest and since the seminal work of Lanckriet et al. (2004b), several works on this topic have flourished. For instance, multiple kernel learning has been transposed to least-square fitting and logistic regression (Bach et al., 2004b). Independently, several authors have applied mixed-norm regularization, such as the additive spline regression model of Grandvalet and Canu (1999). This type of regularization, which is now known as the group lasso, may be seen as a linear version of multiple kernel learning (Bach, 2008). Several algorithms have been proposed for solving the group lasso problem. Some of them are based on projected gradient or on coordinate descent algorithm. However, they all consider the non-smooth version of the problem. We previously mentioned that Zien and Ong (2007) have proposed an MKL algorithm based on structured-output SVMs. For such problem, the loss function, which differs from the usual SVM hinge loss, leads to an algorithm based on cutting planes instead of the usual QP approach.

Y dylanwad mwyaf ar y seicolegydd a’r ymchwilydd Barbara Rogoff oedd Vygotsky. Mae ganddi ddidordeb arbennig yn rôl oedolion yn llywio a mowldio dysgu plant. Gwelodd Rogoff fod cymdeithas a diwylliant yn allweddol i’r broses hon. Aeth ati i astudio, fel seicolegydd ethnograffaidd yn y maes, yng nghanol cymuned Maya yn Guatemala. Bu’n arsylwi plant ifainc gan nodi eu bod yn cymryd rhan yn yr un gweithgareddau â’r oedolion: coginio a pharatoi bwyd, garddio, gofalu am blant, trin y cartref ac yn y blaen. Nid oedd, yn y gymdeithas honno, arferion plentyndod fel yr oedd Rogoff yn gyfarwydd â nhw yn yr Unol Daleithiau. Yn ei harsylwadau, nododd Rogoff fod gwehyddu yn bwysig iawn yn niwylliant y Maya ac roedd ganddi ddiddordeb mawr yn y modd yr oedd y merched bach yn dod i ddysgu’r grefft o wehyddu, yn enwedig gan fod gwehyddu’n broses gymhleth iawn sy’n gofyn am nifer fawr o sgiliau. Daeth i’r casgliad fod plant yn dysgu’n raddol, dros gyfnod maith o amser, gan edrych yn gyntaf a chael cyfarwyddyd gofalus a hwyliog gan yr oedolion. Galwodd Rogoff hyn yn gyfranogi dan gyfarwyddyd (guided participation).
