Journal Article Highlights in Applied Linguistics: An Exploration into the Rhetorical Moves and their Lexico-grammatical Features

Journal Article Highlights in Applied Linguistics: An Exploration into the Rhetorical Moves and their Lexico-grammatical Features

As indicated in Table 3, research findings, methodology, and purpose were the top three frequent functions used by authors in RA highlights. Of the 250 investigated highlights, 247 highlights (98.8 %) included at least one entry to convey the findings of the study which indicated that, as advised in the guideline for journal authors in Elsevier (2018), authors in applied linguistics used highlights to present and summarize the main findings of the study. In addition, entries on research methodology were the second most frequent entries (39.6%) used in highlights indicating that authors acknowledged readers’ need to know how the research had actually been conducted. These findings were consistent with the result of the study conducted by Yang (2016) who argued that RA highlights emphasize the results, methods and discussion of the research. However, our findings also indicated that authors frequently included entries on the main purpose of the research study as 104 (41.6%) highlights included at least one entry to describe and introduce the main goal of the paper. It must be noted that our analysis indicated that a limited number of entries in our corpus (N=13) were a combination of purpose and methodology (E.g., this study develops a model of L2 writing quality using structural equation modeling). In order to consider these entries for further analysis, they were classified in both corpora of research purpose and research methodology. Eventually, of all 1116 entries investigated in our corpus, only 23 entries were classified in this sub-corpus. This finding provides further evidence that writers, reasonably, focus on the new study while writing RA highlights. In other words, they tend to allocate more entries to the the purpose, methodology and the findings of the present study conducted rather than introduce the research scene or review the previous literature related to the study.

Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal: A consolidated scientific community locally and globally

With this outstanding group of articles published in the first issue of Volume 21, I would like to close an important professional and personal learning process as the head of the editorial team of the Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal. I feel grateful to my institution, Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, for the professional support received during the last 10 years by hiring a technical team through the Center for Research and Scientific Development (CIDC) to assist the arduous job of the editor. Moreover, the scientific community of the Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal was also fully supported by other national and international communities of scholars who are committed to the same high quality standards in publication or have been in the field for a longer trajectory. To those thousands of authors, peer evaluators, colleagues in the scientific and editorial boards who have accompanied the editor for 20 years I am forever grateful. It was your professional judgment and ethical practice and our rigorous and ethical editorial practice that permitted to position the Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal as a solid scientific publication and a valuable source for teacher educators and researchers in Latin America and other parts of the globe where CALJ has a wide audience.

individual manuscript-chapters themselves. One approach is to plan and tailor these chapters for specific journals from the beginning of the writing process. To accomplish this, students will want to investigate the target journals thoroughly and determine, first, if the content aligns with the vision and direction of the journal and, second, organize the article appropriately and draw on relevant literature. Some journals, for example, will want a separate section that explicitly lists the research question(s), while others allow these to be borne out in less explicit ways, or at least embedded in different sections. How to structure and title the sections and subsections of these manuscript-chapters also requires consideration. Certain journals might have more rigid

Key Lexical Chunks in Applied Linguistics Article Abstracts

Key Lexical Chunks in Applied Linguistics Article Abstracts

This research is based on a corpus of 2,750,000 words coming from all electronically copyable abstracts in 30 major applied linguistics journals. The abstracts of feature articles in these journals were copied from their websites onto Word files. Then, information other than the titles and the main bodies of the abstracts was removed. The remaining texts were carefully reviewed for misspellings. Then, the files were converted to basic text format to take less computer memory space and be compatible with the text analysis software. Finally, the 30 files were coalesced in one massed file of 2,750,000 words. The dates of the publication of the abstracts ranged from the earliest issue of each journal which made free online abstracts available to the last issue which was available online on August 1, 2013. Some articles were not accompanied by abstracts, some abstracts were not in copyable formats, and many journals had not published online article abstracts for their early issues; however, the inclusion of a huge number of abstracts from 1967 to 2013 leaves little doubt concerning the representativeness of the corpus.

Language Teaching Research Based on Applied Linguistics Theory

Language Teaching Research Based on Applied Linguistics Theory

DOI: 10.4236/jss.2018.612029 345 Open Journal of Social Sciences Step 2: Teacher’s leadership. The second phase will take about five weeks. The teacher proposes vocabulary strategies to express the following words: Firstly, the teacher uses pictures, objects or simple strokes as cues to help students guess unfamiliar words. Secondly, teachers use context as a cue. Thirdly, teachers take the social and cultural background as a hint. Fourthly, teachers use linguistic context as a cue. Reading is the key to enlarging students’ vocabulary and can improve their vocabulary learning ability. First, the students are asked to read the whole article and get unknown words, and then choose them one by one. In addition, the teacher guides the students to guess the meaning of unknown words according to six clues. Next, the teacher evaluates and explains these words in detail so that the students can understand them. After guessing the words correctly, the students should combine these words together to listen, speak, read and write.

Peripheral Themes in Applied Linguistics Articles

Peripheral Themes in Applied Linguistics Articles

Roshd is a local, peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by the Ministry of Education in Iran. It targets the English language teachers, students who major in teaching English, and all of those interested in teaching foreign languages. Its aim is to help local teachers share and benefit from each other’s experiences. This journal usually accepts RAs in German, English, and Persian. It predominantly publishes the M.A. thesis-driven RAs by novice Iranian researchers. The RAs are expected to be up-to-date in content, helpful to teachers of English, and bridge the gap between research findings and classroom activities. Besides article publication, the journal publishes interviews with famous local applied linguists, education/higher education authorities, as well as language teachers.

Combinatory Linguistics: An Area of Theoretical and Applied Language Study

Combinatory Linguistics: An Area of Theoretical and Applied Language Study

Another significant aspect laid in Combinatory Linguistics is combinability. It consists in studying word combinations subordinated to certain communicative tasks under existing conditions of their realization. The choice of the model of the utterance and filling it with certain lexical units depend on the speaker’s intentions and the specific situation in which the speaker takes part. A wide study of combinability of language units from the historical viewpoint has revealed the theoretical and methodological fundamentals of Combinatory Linguistics. The theory of A. Diskol and early doctrines of Russian linguists [7-10] became the preconditions of its origin. However, the area of their interests was limited to syntax as a process of syntagmatic deployment in time since the formation of blocks on syntactic dependences is more available to observation.

The rapid and accurate high-performance liquid chromatography method with ultraviolet detection (210 nm) for the determination of Ziprasidone in rat urine was developed. Simple protocol of solid-phase extraction of ziprasidone from urine sample at presence its main metabolites was worked out. Vardenafil was used as an internal standard. Reversed phase column LUNA® C18(2) 100A 250 mm × 4.6 mm × 5 μm was used with an isocratic mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile : 0.5 % triethylamine (30: 70) and 0.1 M phosphoric acid (pH 2.5). Developed conditions of HPLC analysis provide high efficiency of a system and good separation of analytes. The method was validated and applied to rat urine samples after modelling intoxication. The intra- and inter-day precision was ≤ 15% with recovery about 95 %. A linear range of 1 μg/mL to 200 μg/mL was established. LOD and LOQ were 0.2 and 0.5 μg/mL, respectively. Obtained results indicate that the described procedure of sample pretreatment with automatization possibility allows obtaining good results for ziprasidone. This method is sensitive, precise and repeatable enough to be used in toxicological casework.

Abstract We are investigating in this study the screening and selection of cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao L.) endophytic bacteria having antagonistic effects against the fungi Phytophthora spp. and to assess their inhibitory potential as biological control agents against black pod disease in Côte d'Ivoire. A total of One hundred and sixteen bacteria were isolated from symptomless root, leaf and stem tissues of two cocoa clones NA32 (susceptible) and P7 (resistant) young seedlings. These isolates restricted the radial growth of the mycelium of P. palmivora (strain BL7.11.2) and P. megakarya (strain 13P30.1) with percentages inhibition of 28.58 to 70.54% and 25.3 to 64.29% respectively. Four isolates, 48P, 60P, 23P and 18N were more effective in in vitro test and selected for in vivo confrontation test on leaf discs. Treatments based on two isolates S1 (48P) and S2 (18N) applied at the concentration 10 9 CFU/mL significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the black pod necrosis induced by the two Phytophthora strains on the leaf discs of three cocoa clones (NA32, PA150 and SCA6). In addition, simultaneous (C3PS1 and C3PS2) or separate (C3AVS1 and C3AVS2) inoculations of these two bacteria and Phytophthora, induced resistance to the clone NA32 and increased the intrinsic resistance of the clones PA150 and SCA6. This study showed that endophytic bacteria antagonistic to Phytophthora spp. can be an alternative solution in the biocontrol of black pod disease. In situ pod tests should be performed to confirm these preliminary results and propose effective bacterial inoculum.
