Classical CM systems treat monitored parameters individually by trending processed results from single sensors (single values or spectral arrays) and relying upon the maintenance engineer to interpret them in combina- tion. The intelligent sensor can take many transducer readings and share this information with other sensors. The combined data can be fused to produce a multi- dimensional representation whose trends and variations provide much more powerful condition-indicating in- formation. For example, in the case of rolling element bearing damage, rises in bearing frequencies may be accompanied by impact excited resonance and a lagged rise in housing temperature, measured by an acceler- ometer and a thermometer respectively. By mathematical manipulation these three data forms from the two sensors can be fused to produce a powerful multi-variate indicator.

A problem based / experiential learning approach to teaching maintenance engineering

A PBL/EL approach has been applied to a short course on maintenance for mechanical engineering undergraduates. The teaching method applied facilitated the compilation of the required routine maintenance schedule by canvassing a range of considerations. This resulted in an apparent improvement of student learning as indicated by summative assessments and anecdotal evidence via student study surveys. This success has been attributed to the students’ experiences in planning maintenance activities and generalizing those activities through the theory given during formal lectures. While the exercise was very time demanding on teaching staff, the benefits accruing to students through development of new learning styles and skills mean that the approach will very likely be continued into the future.

ConEditor+: Capture and Maintenance of Constraints in Engineering Design

The Designers’ Workbench is a system, developed to support designers in large organizations, such as Rolls-Royce, by making sure that the design is consistent with the specification for the particular design as well as with the company’s design rule book(s). Currently, to capture the constraint infor- mation, a domain expert (design engineer) has to work with a knowledge engineer to identify the constraints, and it is then the task of the knowledge engineer to encode these into the Workbench’s knowledge base (KB). This is an error prone and time consuming task. It is highly desirable to re- lieve the knowledge engineer of this task, and so we have developed a tool, ConEditor+ that enables domain experts themselves to capture and maintain these constraints. The tool allows the user to com- bine selected entities from the domain ontology with keywords and operators of a constraint lan- guage to form a constraint expression. Further, we hypothesize that to apply constraints appropriately, it is necessary to understand the context in which each constraint is applicable. We refer to this as “application conditions”. We show that an explicit representation of application conditions, in a ma- chine interpretable format, along with the con- straints and the domain ontology can be used to support the verification and maintenance of con- straints.

Occupational risk and chronic kidney disease: a population-based study in the United States adult population

Materials and methods: This was a population-based survey study of 91,340 participants in the US, who completed the National Health Interview Survey, 2004 through 2008. The out- come variable, CKD, was defined as having weakening/failing kidneys in the past 12 months, as diagnosed by a physician. The predictor variable, occupation, was obtained using the census occupational codes, regrouped according to North American Industrial Classification System. Results: After controlling for age, gender, hypertension, and education, and with the category Life, Physical, and Social Science Occupations as a reference group, the likelihood of devel- oping CKD was 4.3 times higher in respondents working in Building, Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations, 4.4 times higher in Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupa- tions, 4.7 times higher in Transportation and Material Moving Occupations and in Computer and Mathematical Occupations, 4.8 times higher in Production Occupations, 5.3 times higher in Food Preparation and Serving Related Occupations, and 6.1 times higher in Healthcare Support Occupations and in Legal Occupations.

The driving module was only used in this study and we observed the hydraulic characteristics under given flow rate. As the relevance of the analytical model is proved by correlation with bench test result, we can successfully predict the hydraulic behavior of the driving system under given condition.
