The role of ITS in noise mapping and noise action planning.

In this paper we presented several case studies to illustrate how ITS measures can be evaluated and what impact they can be expected to have on noise levels. These case studies, from the HEAVEN project and the effects of a lower speed limit with strict enforcement on a motorway, showed that modelling ITS measures often requires adaptation of existing static assignment and micro-simulation packages, to enable the modelling of changes in driver and vehicle behaviour. The case studies also showed that the effects that can be expected from (current) ITS measures on noise seem to be small. Far more effective measures exist, such as noise screens pervious asphalt. However, in specific cases ITS measures may be effective in reducing peaks in noise levels, and therefore reduce noise annoyance and sleep disturbance. In some cases, ITS measures may be the only option. And as ITS measures will continue to evolve, and the EU Directives continue to require accurate noise mapping, research into the (modelling of) effects of ITS measures remains important.

Audio noise mapping for virtual urban simulations: enhancing public awareness

In the EU, the current noise mapping process involves a number of specific steps before the compilation of noise maps and associated action plans for public viewing (Figure 1). One of the key difficulties with urban environmental noise mapping is disseminating results from noise studies in a manner that is easily understood by the general public. Results from noise studies are generally displayed in strategic 2D noise maps with some maps offering 3D representations of 2D information [6]. An added difficulty with current noise maps is that they noise levels are displayed in decibels (dB(A)) which are not intuitive for on-specialists. The decibel scale is a log scale whereby noise intensity roughly doubles with every 10 dB(A) increase in noise and this is a concept which is extremely difficult to convey to the general public via traditional noise maps.

A study was conducted on the roads of Mumbai city using a Sound Level Meter (SLM). This data was tabulated to demarcate the city into different noise zones. The Leq, Noise Climate, and Noise pollution levels were calculated . This was further represented in the form of cartographic maps for easy understanding. It was found that the noise levels in overall city were very high and above the permissible limits. The average values throughout were 70-80dB .

Soundscape design integrating noise mapping techniques: a case study in Brighton, UK

Abstract: In the guidelines about the management of areas of good environmental noise quality recently published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) it is suggested to combine diferent methodologies, like noise mapping, sound level measurements and the soundscape approach. Such a recommendation has started to be recognised by a number of local authorities in Europe that are gradu- ally integrating a holistic concept into their environmental noise policies. This research aimed to explore and demon- strate the possibility to integrate conventional noise map- ping methods and soundscape methods in an actual ur- ban redevelopment project. A case study was made using the Valley Gardens project in Brighton & Hove (UK). Dif- ferent scenarios of sound-pressure level distributions were simulated for both traic sound sources (i.e. noise maps) and natural sound sources (i.e. sound maps). Addition- ally, individual responses about the sound environment of the place collected during an on-site question survey were used to implement soundscape maps.

Assessment of Indoor and Outdoor Noise Pollution at a University Hospital Based on Acoustic Measurements and Noise Mapping

The acoustic maps clearly show the existence of noise pollution mainly due to the traffic of light and heavy vehicles. The heavy vehicles counted during the sound pres- sure measurements were predominantly buses. These buses transport patients from several locations in the city and state to the University Hospital. Any reduction in the noise levels that reach the frontal facade of the hospital, and therefore the patient rooms and other hospital facilities facing the street along the front of the hospital, would re- quire an immediate reduction in the vehicle flow, especially of buses, in front of the hospital. This would be difficult to achieve, since many patients who arrive at the hos- pital are unable to walk and have to be dropped off right at the main entrance of the hospital.

logged every second via a GPS system synchronised with a sound level meter (and a noise dosimeter for the pedestrian case). Microphones were positioned at waist level and shoulder level, Figure 2. Thus, instead of measurements only acquiring data at fixed positions, data was captured at one second intervals over a range of locations along the route. For a single data set, viz. the acquisition of time and location for a single journey by a pedestrian/bicycle/car, a high spatial resolution can be obtained (ref. dataset 1 in figure 3) compared to a single fixed location measurement, as performed in accordance with the CRTN/ISO 1996 procedures. Through the assembly of data over many such journeys, very large amounts of data can be gathered for any one location - ref. dataset 2 in figure 3. The result in the accumulation of this data will be information gathered at both a high temporal and spatial resolution.

Most of the researchers used GIS as a tool for development of 2D noise map in different countries like Taiwan, Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Turkey, Kenya, Spain, Nigeria, Portugal and Egypt. In some countries, research- ers used other tools for the development of noise maps; for instance, Nasim Akhter et al. (in India), and Zannin et al. (In Brazil) used soundPlan for the development of 2D and 3D mapping. In Chi- na, [Wu, et al., 2018] used Swallow sound for the development of a 2D noise map for the selected locations. In Latin America [Fiedler and Zannin, 2015], used Predictor 8.11 for the development of 2D and 3D noise mapping for the selected loca- tion of the Curitiba city. CAD 3D software has also been used in two countries i.e., in Spain and Brazil, in Madrid and Brasilia, respectively, for the 2d noise mapping only. Most of the research- ers have developed 2D noise maps only for the selected locations of different countries such as [Kartikey Tiwari et al., 2017] for India, [Tsai et al., 2009] for Taiwan, [Paulo and David, 2011] for Brazil, [Wu, 2015] for China, [Vasilyev, 2017] for Russia, [Awadhi and Kandary, 2017] for Kuwait, [Dursun et. al., 2006] for Turkey, Brainard et al., 2004 for United Kingdom, [Wawa and Mulaku, 2009] for Kenya, [Arana et al. 2009] for Spain, [Coelho and Alarcao, 2005] for Portugal, [Eldien, 2009] for Egypt, [Nicolas et al., 2016] for Chile, [Olayinka, 2012] for Nigeria, and [Farcaş and Sivertunb, 2015] for Sweden. Few researchers have developed 3D noise maps for a selected lo- cation of some countries, such as [Nasim Akhtar et al., 2016] for India, [Stoter et al., 2008] for the Netherlands, [Kossakowski, 1990] for Poland, [Fiedler and Zannin, 2015] for Latin America. As per the above literature review of 2D and 3D noise mapping, it has been established that the 2D noise maps have been developed by most of the researchers for their respective developing coun- tries to find out the distribution of noise along a central line of a road or along the periphery of an industry. However, the literature survey also shows that the 3D noise gives a clear picture of the noise distribution in all three directions X, Y, and Z. Effects of image reconstruction on fiber orientation mapping from multichannel diffusion MRI: reducing the noise floor using SENSE

To examine whether image reconstruction influences only model-based fibre mapping approaches, we estimated fibre orientations through diffusion CSA ODFs [17]. These are functions on the sphere that indicate how likely diffusion along a certain orientation is. Figure 5 shows ODF glyphs obtained from the SENSE1 and RSoS data. The RSoS ODFs appear to be squashed along their largest peak, compared to the respective SENSE1. This is particularly evident for the most anisotropic regions, within the corpus callosum. The maximum ODF magnitude is reduced on average by 5%, 12% and 20% for b=1000, 2000 and 3000 s/mm 2 respectively, when RSoS reconstruction is employed compared to SENSE1. For less coherent regions, where the signal attenuation is smaller (e.g. centrum semiovale), the squashing is much smaller. However, it becomes more evident for a b value of 3000 s/mm 2 .
