Through A Scanner Darkly: Neuropsychology and psychosis in Philip K. Dick's novel "A Scanner Darkly"

Partly motivated by his increasing brushes with psychosis, by the early 1970s, Philip K. Dick was struggling with increasing doubts over the nature of reality and personal identity. Perhaps unsurprisingly, characters with unstable worlds and existential doubts are a familiar focus of his work. Dick was interested in more than just description however, and often used his novels to explore personal theories of existence. During his research, he discovered the work of Roger Sperry, who had rocked the foundations of neuroscience by discovering that when separated, the hemispheres of the brain seemed, at least to some degree, independently conscious. Worried about his own perception of reality, Dick considered that this could explain his increasing feelings of alienation and self-detachment. These reflections resulted in A Scanner Darkly, a partly autobiographical near-future novel that remains an incisive

uncommon in science fiction, but in Dick’s case they have an unusually complex psychological background, consisting primarily of his lifelong bereavement after the death of his twin sister, an addiction to amphetamines and other drugs that lasted several decades, fantasies that he was being pursued by the FBI and the CIA, religious brooding and Gnostic ideas, and perhaps a mild form of epilepsy. 14 For Dick, the depiction of multiple realities was apparently not merely a literary device, but rather an expression of how he experienced the world. And although he was a skilled and successful SF-writer, he never really felt at home in the genre. On the contrary, he had a rather condescending attitude towards it. His appraisal of SF enthusiasts is typical: "The early fans were just trolls and wackos. They were terribly ignorant and weird people." 15

The Grand Strategy of Philip II

The Grand Strategy of Philip II

The three case studies chosen by Parker to demonstrate the formation and implementation of Philip II's grand strategy all deal with North Western Europe and all are concerned with areas which troubled the Spanish Empire for a considerable period during the later half of the sixteenth century. That the case studies do not deal with the Mediterranean, the Turks or the Indies reflects both the available evidence and the areas of most interest when it comes to the English speaking historians of Philip II's Spain. This is not a criticism: the concentration on the North West of Europe lends a cohesion to Parker's argument over an extended timeframe and a set geographic area. Where there is criticism, it is that the analysis stops in 1588. Taking a case study dealing with England, Scotland and the Netherlands to Philip's death would have allowed for wider discussion of fifth-columnists, sponsored Jesuit infiltration of enemy territory, the situation following the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots (and the claims to the English throne - rumoured and real - of Philip II and the Infanta) and other abortive armadas. Parker recognises to give you too much of a good thing is to spoil the reader. This reader wanted to be spoilt more and more!

A STUDY OF PHILIP ROTH’S THE HUMBLING

A STUDY OF PHILIP ROTH’S THE HUMBLING

The present paper on Philip Roth‟s novel The Humbling (2009) analyses how the sacrosanct ideals of a unified family and marital life have begun to be questioned in the contemporary times. Philip Roth is a postmodernist as many of his “works critique and parody grand narratives, meta-concepts, and meta-ideologies” (Statlander 5). In The Humbling, he writes about the meta-institution of traditional family which seems to whip its individuals physically and mentally. He shows that even though the different communities living in America have economically established themselves, yet their family lives continue to be traditional and patriarchal with homes often acting as torture chambers for the individuals living in them. Roth seems to suggest here that a stressful or troublesome family life, the sooner it ends, the better it is. The protagonist Simon Axler in The Humbling finds that a release from the invidious torture of his family is better as it would afford a constructive and positive solution to him for his situations of crisis and depression.
