Een game-animator heeft een character voor een nieuw honkbalspel gemaakt en wil de bewegingen die deze character kan maken creëren met Moven. Hij vraagt een professionele honkbalspeler naar zijn studio te komen om daar een aantal honkbalbewegingen voor te doen met de Moven Suit aan. De honkbalspeler trekt het pak aan en de game-animator voert samen met hem een T-positie calibratie uit met behulp van Moven Studio. De honkbalspeler maakt een aantal mooie bewegingen die goed opgenomen worden in Moven Studio. Vervolgens loopt de game-animator naar de honkbalspeler toe en legt hem uit wat hij nog meer wil zien. Wanneer de hij even later terugloopt en de opname opnieuw afspeelt ziet hij dat de laatste bewegingen er allemaal raar uit zien. Na de handleiding geraadpleegd te hebben denkt hij dat de opnames misschien beïnvloedt zijn door verstoringen van het magnetische veld. Om deze voortaan te detecteren zet hij de functie “Show magnetic disturbance” aan in Moven Studio. Om toch goede opnames te krijgen besluit hij de opnames in een andere ruimte opnieuw te doen. The Virtual Knoweldge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences (VKS) is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), aimed at the reflection and study of the interplay between technology, science and society. In somewhat more concrete terms, the VKS offers a collaborative space for academics from a range of different fields to investigate how the social sciences and humanities make use of new information and communication technologies, how the social sciences can and should do research on and about the Internet and how this challenges traditional ideas about how to how to “do science”. Presently, ten full members work at the VKS permanently, with a number of visiting and honorary fellows, occasionally participating in joint projects and symposia. The VKS is located in the building of the International Institute of Social History (IISG) in the east of Amsterdam.

Shakespeare’s leading roles are widely assumed to be pinnacles of a performing career, but how might they be played by actors whose conditions of employment enabled their focus to be drawn away from an individualistic focus upon the perceived necessity to achieve “greatness” and towards collective endeavor? Such a studio might begin to discover how audiences respond to a Shakespeare play with their attention di- verted from its historical status and towards its capacity to speak directly to the present. These goals are all discernible in Stanislavsky’s approach to Shakespeare, even if it did not always live up to them. While it is our responsibility to reflect upon his mistakes, the essays collected in this vol- ume and the history I have sketched here are also a call to action, a spur to us to get on with the business of making our own, living technique.

An optimized design of a microwave vacuum (MV) chamber was first studied prior to the development of the whole microwave vacuum dryer. Using CST Microwave Studio simulation software, the optimal design parameters of the chambers were determined. It is seen that the best design for a 30-L MV chamber operating at 2.45 GHz, a frequency which is the same as what is used in a conventional microwave oven, is a cylindrical chamber with a radius of 202 mm, length of 400 mm, and with two perpendicular feeders located near the ends of the chamber.
