The Effect of Asphalt Concrete Micro & Macro Texture on Skid Resistance

Accepted: 5 January 2013 Skid resistance and road condition are common indices of road safety; therefore providing adequate skidding resistance will reduce the incidence of road accidents. The surface macrotexture has a large effect on the characteristics of road surface skidding, which is the focus of this research. During the study, the mean texture depth of the road surface was measured, in order to determine the conditions that ensure the maximum contact area between the vehicle tires and road surface during wet conditions. The Pavement Guideline No. 234 was consulted for the test procedure and road surface composition, which used open and dense graded crushed lime aggregates with varying percentages of bitumen applied to the mix design. The samples were then tested to assess their stability using the Marshall and Gyratory Tests. The results showed that with the application and evaluation of the sand patch method, where the effect of the macrotexture on skidding resistance was analyzed with various gradations, there was an improved higher skidding resistance and a subsequent projected reduction of accidents with an increased safety.

ABSTRACT Passageways in cattle buildings should provide durable and non-slippery surfaces to allow cattle an unrestrained locomotion and expression of behaviour. In order to evaluate walking areas of cattle buildings and their grip or skid resistance, measures with a Skid Resistance Tester to obtain SRT-values were performed on several dairy farms in Germany. Uncoated concrete, brushed concrete, epoxy resin coating and mastic asphalt as coating of concrete were investigated. Results demonstrated, that even high quality concrete had low SRT-values and thus low grip, whereas mastic asphalt showed high SRT-values, meaning good grip. Processing uncoated concrete surface and epoxy resin coating lead to higher SRT-values compared to mastic asphalt. Due to changes of micro-roughness of mastic asphalt, attention should be paid, to keep passageways as clean and dry as possible.

Assessment of Skid Resistance of Road Pavements

Abstract. The quality of the paved road depends not only on the decisions of the road designer and the work carried out but also on the materials used. Most of the aggregates used are imported from other countries. However, the usage of domestic materials reduces the cost of the road pavement and the use of aggregates produced by a special production technology in Lithuania, i.e., dolomite aggregates instead of granite aggregates. Experimental studies were carried out on the skid resistance of the road surface. It was found that the coefficient of skid resistance met the requirements for surface dressing with dolomite aggregate, and the results were analysed with 95% probability. This coefficient partially met the requirements for asphalt concrete, while it did not meet the requirements at all for stone mastic asphalt. The surface roughness, however, met the requirements for road sections where granite aggregates were used instead of dolomite in mixes of surface dressing and asphalt concrete. The analysis was carried out considering the volume of traffic and the service life of the individual road sections. It was determined that it was suitable for a 5-year guarantee period to perform the surface dressing, wearing course of asphalt concrete and stone mastic asphalt with dolomite aggregate where part of heavy vehicles is less than 20% of traffic flow. The use of granite aggregates was justified only in the road where heavy vehicles dominated.

Table 4.3 demonstrates that the sections evaluated were relatively similar in terms of transverse cracking; furthermore, transverse cracking is anticipated to have only a marginal effect on skid resistance in the wheel path compared to alligator cracking. Because transverse cracks are perpendicular to the flow of traffic, sealant application is expected to have a minimal impact on overall skid resistance. In contrast, the sealing of alligator cracks leads to a high concentration of crack sealant in the wheel path. Location C is the only roadway that did not exhibit evidence of severe oxidation; it is interestingly also the pavement with the worst baseline SN value and highest amount of crack sealant coverage in the wheel path. Furthermore, the results of Location F compared to the other locations indicate transverse cracking did not lead to excessive crack sealant application; while Location F shows the greatest transverse cracking, it does not show nearly the highest crack sealant coverage in the wheel path. Skid resistance was measured in accordance to ASTM E3030-93, four swings of the pendulum were made for each test CPBs surface. In general, the CPBs produced in this study satisfy ASTM re- quirement that BPN were higher than 45. It is found that skid resistance was slightly higher for CPBs without facing layer (76.7) compare to with facing layer (75.0). It was contributed by the rough surface texture of the paving blocks to create more friction as the pendulum passed across it.

We assess functionality loss of airfields by applying the key findings from skid resistance and road marking coverage experiments for airfield concrete surfaces cov- ered by ash (Fig. 3). It is important to consider such im- pact types, as aircraft operation may be possible when airborne ash concentrations are below aviation authority, and airline and airport guideline values. Although ve- hicle operation on airfields by ground staff could occur, even when aircraft are grounded, we focus on aircraft operations for the fragility function chart (Fig. 5). These fragility functions estimate the temporal duration of air- port function assuming that the surrounding airspace is open and prior to any clean-up. Some functionality loss of the airport surface is possible between 0.1 and 1.0 mm due to markings becoming covered and reduced skid resistance (Blake et al. 2016, 2017a) before the air- port is likely closed if ash accumulates to > 1 mm thick- ness. We display the temporal component for airport closure graphically as separate ISs (Fig. 5) as such infor- mation may be beneficial for end-users of fragility functions.
