Finally, taking into considerations of some limitations in the present study, the possible directions for research on metacognition are proposed. The sample size used for this study to examine the generated research questions was rather small and composed of only the Form 2 and Form 5 students. This may be a limitation of the generalizability of the study findings. In future studies, to put our current understanding of metacognition in students in broader perspective, a larger picture is needed. Therefore the metacognitive inventory should be applied to more different academic years and age groups. This may involves assessing the relationship of metacognition with studentsacademic performance at various levels of education stages, at pre-school, primary school and secondary school for instance. To do this definitely, the suitables metacognitive inventory need to developed to suit each researched group. Perhaps with a more holistic and bigger sample size, significantly concrete results can answered the research questions of the present study. Another limitation is, in the present study, the only criteria of the academic performance was their total average mark of examination scores. These marks may not be a valid indicator of true performance or achievement. In addition to the total average marks of the examination scores, different criteria for the identification of academic performance should be used. Rather than relying on one criteria of performance or achievement, various sources of information would be more valid indicators to academic success and this need to be further identified and researched.

Participants’ academic performance was obtained from the departmental students’ records and information on one of the core nursing courses offered. Core nursing courses often require students’ active attention as they relate to human health conditions and nursing care management determination for quality and positive healthcare outcomes. Listening in nursing is thus a useful tool that requires concentration of attention and mobilization of all the senses for the perception of verbal and non-verbal messages emitted by those involved in the communication process (Papadantonaki, 2006, Camillo, Nóbrega and Théo, 2010, Yook, 2012).Good listening ability means having competence to comprehend information during academic exercises that results in learning (Bashir &Mattoo, 2012) and transferring this learning into practice. In this regard, the prevalence of social networking addiction among students in Singapore and India was reported to be 29.5 and 36.9% respectively [26, 28]. The results of a meta-analysis study (2018) on inter- net addiction showed that, the prevalence of internet ad- diction among medical students was 30.1% worldwide [49]. Results of a meta-analysis study (2017) suggest that, the prevalence of internet addiction in Iran is moderate [50]. Social networking addiction increases the incidence of disorders such as depression, stress and anxiety [28, 29]. If students fail to manage the time they spend on social networks and the reasons for doing that, they will be seriously harmed at individual and social levels. Ac- cordingly, the result of a study showed that the overuse of social networks affects the social life of individuals [51]. Hawi and Samaha (2016) argued that, the higher the social networking addiction of students, the lower their self-esteem is [52]. The use of social networks has become an integral part of the lives of many students, because they introduce them to a world of different pos- sibilities, especially in their field of study. To determine the level of happiness, respondents were made to answer the question “How happy are you as a student in Eastern Samar State University (ESSU)? Answers were categorized into 5, with 5 very much happy, 4 as moderately happy, 3 as happy, 2 not so happy and 1 not happy. Questions on lifestyle were mostly answerable by yes or no and were categorized as 1 for yes, and 0 for no. The lifestyle of the respondents to include alcohol consumption, smoking, sexual activities and cell phone use served as the dependent variables of the study. Cramer’s V correlation coefficient was computed to determine significant relationship between independent variables and dependent variables which were set at .05 level of significance. The researcher personally distributed the questionnaires to the respondents and explained to them the significance of the study and to request that they participate. To guarantee and safeguard the confidentiality of information, respondents were requested to enclose the questionnaire in a sealed envelope after completely answering all the questions in the self-administered questionnaire. With this, the researcher was already confident to illicit accurate and honest answers from respondents. No validation of answers was ever made. The basic tool used in this study was the questionnaire which was presented to the research panel of the institution for improvement. A dry run was made prior to the actual conduct of the study to determine the administrability of the instrument and tofind out the need for revision. The researcher asked permission from the different campus administrators before the conduct of the study. In general, for both males and females, the time spent on SNS decreased as the age of the respondent increased. A greater number of younger students reported negative perception of the effect of SNSs on their academic performance. Positive correlations were found in SNS usage rate and studentsnetworking with friends, family members, and professionals, while negative correlations were observed between SNS usage rate and students’ search for volunteer opportunities, and awareness of others' improved search for a date. Positive correlations were also found between age and studentsnetworking with friends, family, and professionals as well as between age and awareness of others' experience of cyber bullying. On the other hand, a negative correlation was found between age and users’ awareness of others’ improved search for a date via SNS. Camilia, Ibrahim and Dalhatu (2013) found that the students of tertiary institutions in Mubi educational zone use Face book more than any other social networking sites followed by 2go and YouTube. They do this by updating their status regularly, writing on friends’ walls and uploading pictures. Some of these students also go online just to while away their time; these times would have been used for more important things in that they allocate more time for SNSs and less time for studying. They also noted that the students spend two to four hour daily on the SNSs doing their updates, postings and other visitations. A majority of the students agreed to using the SNSs for their academic assignment.

This study looked at the influence of social media usage on academic performance of students in tertiary institutions. It took into account types of social media sites and devices used. Tamale polytechnic was the study area which is made up of (3) major academic schools. A sample size of 600 was drawn out of a total population of 6000. Total 558 of the questionnaires were retrieved which represents a response rate of 93.0%. The findings revealed that most of the students make use smartphones, Followed by cell phones and laptops. For the use of social network sites, it was obvious that, most of the students made use Facebook, followed by Google and Whatsapp. As to whether social media assist academic work, 345, representing 64.6% indicated that social media enhances academic performance of students. The study also revealed that there is no correlation between academic schools and use of social media. likewise the year groups, there is no relationship between year group and use of social media. Even though students generally use social media for academic purposes; they also use it for non-academic matters. Students should be encouraged to spend more time of their social media interactions on academic issues rather than non-academic matters.

The Impact of Peerwise Approach on the Academic Performance of Medical Students

PeerWise is a novel, freely available, online pedagogical tool that allows students to create and deposit questions for peer evaluation. A participatory learning approach through this web-based system was used to motivate and promote a deep approach in learning nervous system by 124 second year MBBS students at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences. PeerWise was introduced to the students as an optional component within the nervous system course syllabus. The students were asked to create at least two multiple- choice questions (MCQs) covering different aspects of the syllabus components and to evaluate four MCQs from other students throughout the 5-week duration from December 2013 to January 2014. It was mandatory that the students write, answer and explain their MCQs. It was also essential that they answer, rate and give constructive comments on the MCQs written by their peers. The study reveals that the students were active participants and created a large question bank based on the course syllabus with variable quality. Spearman correlation analysis was performed and shows correlation coefficient values falling in a range between .634 to .739 indicating moderately strong relationship of PeerWise activity with the mark scored in the course. This study reveals that PeerWise is a feasible and large-scale team-based learning tool as the students improve their learning through peer support, analytical and critical thinking as well as personal reflection. The title of this paper is “Social Networking and Academic Performance of University Students in Kenya: A Case Study of Kenyatta University, Kericho Campus.” General objective of the study was to assess the impact of social network on academic performance of University students in Kenya: A case study of Kenyatta University, Kericho Campus. The specific objectives of the study were as follows: to determine the effect of peer interaction on academic performance; to investigate the effect of student- lecturer interaction on academic performance; and to analyse the effect of engaging in social network on academic performance. The total population was 582; while after computing using Taro Yamen’s formula, the sample size was 250. Cross-sectional survey research design employed the use of the closed survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire was administered to students in Kenyatta University, Kericho Campus, Kenya. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The piloted data was analysed to calculate its reliability, and special attention was given to relevance of survey questionnaire and clarity of instructions for this research. Results of the study showed that students of Kenyatta University, Kericho Campus, have access to social media and that their exposure to social media is to a very great extent. Findings also show that exposure to social media has effect on the students and that the effect is positive. Based on the findings, the paper concludes that exposure to social media by the undergraduate students of Kenyatta University has Positive effect on their academic performance. To this end, the paper recommends that the students should pay critical attention to social networking usage, focusing more on using social networking in their academic-related activities. The significance of this study was to the university students to know how best to use social media networks as tool for improving their academic performance, to scholars in furthering the relationship between social networking and academic performance, to the government and other stakeholders in improving the implementation of IT in universities.

There were no rooms to balance gender, age or ethnicity in the sample due to the high diversty of the cohort. These findings are similar to that reported by Imlach et al. and Ebenuwa-Okoh who suggesting that age does not impede academic achievement and that discrete cognitive skills and engagement in cognitively stimulating activities promotes academic success in older students (Ebenuwa-Okoh, 2017; Haq et al., 2005). When comparing academic performance between ethnic groups, British Asians had the lowest academic performance, however this result was insignificant when taking the overall study population into account. These finding were incompatible to that reported by Haq et al., who suggested that medical students of Asian origin, of both genders, educated in the UK with English as their first language, continue to perform at a lower level in OSCEs and written assessments compared to their white European peers (Imlach et al., 2017). Most students participating in this study did not report having family history of anxiety. However, the students who reported family history of anxiety also reported that they are able to cope with examination tension.In this study, the effects of social and family sources of anxiety on academic performance were analysed. There appeared to be a positive correlation between social anxiety and academic performance, as students who experienced symptoms of social anxiety indicated low academic performance. Online social networks are found these days among all generations of internet users so that they have become a noticea ble communicative tool especially for scholars and students. Academies' and faculties are increasingly using the social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Research Gate etc., for communication with potential university students as well as providing educational content. The present study aims to examine the effects of virtual social networks on educational level of the students. The social networks in Ira n have never been studied in terms of the time spent on the social networks and their effects on academies performance. For this purpose, some questionnaires' in Likert spectrum were used in order to ensure the questionnaires' reliability, which were confirmed by the Political Sciences and Law Faculty. Questionnaires' validity was then confirmed by Cronbach- at 0.821. The sample under study consists of 144 students from political sciences and law faculty of Allameh Tabatabai University. The samples were chosen randomly based on SPSS 22 and smart PLS. The obtained results suggested that there's a significant negative relation between the time spent on the social networks and the academic performance. The results also revealed that more attention to the social networks has no impact on the academic performance. In addition, factors such as students' features, their academic capabilities, prediction of their behaviors like their perception of social attitude towards social networks and their tendency toward virtual social networks are related to convenience of using the social networks. The valedictory session was concluded with certificate distribution ceremony to various delegates from different colleges. At last, he appreciated the efforts made by College Managing Committee, Principal and Teaching staff for organizing such type of interactive programs for upgrading the knowledge of students and teachers.
