'I know how I feel': listening to young people with life-limiting conditions who have learning and communication impairments

2 Abstract UK government policy advocates involving children in decisions about their lives. However, disabled children are often marginalized and not consulted, especially those with learning and communication impairments. Drawing on an ongoing English Government funded longitudinal study exploring different groups of service users’ choices, this article demonstrates the important contribution that qualitative research methods, especially non- traditional methods, can procure when working with young people who are nonverbal or have limited speech. Working with young people with life-limiting conditions raises some specific challenges for researchers. Here, adapting project wide materials and research methods in order to gain some thematic continuity across different service user groups. Some of these considerations and challenges will be discussed, especially the development of non-verbal forms of communication (talking mats TM ). Practical experiences, both positive and negative will be examined. The article concludes by considering some wider implications of using symbols based methods for future research and how these methods can be used across disciplines and by practitioners in their everyday work.

“Sometimes I feel like a pharmacist”: identity and medication use among adolescents with juvenile arthritis

“Sometimes I feel like a pharmacist”: identity and medication use among adolescents with juvenile arthritis

It was evident that adolescence posed distinct challenges for young people and their parents (Table 2a); young people had a sense of what was ‘normal’ for them based on past experiences. This varied depending on their age at disease onset (Table 2b). Those with an early onset (during infancy and early childhood) described how arthritis was a ‘normal’ part of their self, and how medi- cation use was a routine part of life. Those diagnosed in later childhood or adolescence, however, described diag- nosis as a life-changing event. Both parents and young people frequently contrasted life before and after diagno- sis, describing how arthritis had profoundly affected young people’s views of the world and how they acted within it. The response of many young people was to try and retain as much of their pre-illness self as possible.

"So I Feel Like I’m Getting It and Then Sometimes I Think OK, No I’m Not": couple and family therapists learning an evidence based practice

Data were analysed using IPA; the inductive procedures of IPA are intended to assist the researcher to develop an initial insider’s perspective on the phenomenon (Reid, Flowers, & Larkin, 2005). The participants’ interviews were analyzed using the six-step process outlined by Smith et al. (2009). The first step was the reading and re-reading of the transcripts and noting anything of interest within a transcript. Secondly, initial noting at three levels which are the participant’s content, linguistic interpretations, and conceptual comments. Next, we developed emergent themes followed by a search for connections across emergent themes, identifying and exploring oppositional items, identifying contextual or normative elements, and identifying the purpose a theme may play in a CFT’s life. The fifth step was to move on to the next interview and repeat the first four steps. Finally, we began to look for patterns across interviews and identify the most important things to say about participants. In general, IPA moves from the particular to the shared, from the descriptive to the interpretive, it maintains a commitment to understanding the participant’s point of view, and has a psychological focus on personal meaning making in particular contexts.

I don t feel like a gender, I feel like myself : Kourti, Marianthi; MacLeod, Andrea

Of particular note is the extent to which interests played a role in defining both gender identity and identity in general. Most participants within this study characterised their sense of identity as ‘fluid’ and defined more from their interests: “My sense of identity is fluid, just as my sense of gender is fluid […] The only constant identity that runs through my life as a thread is ‘dancer’. This is more important to me than gender, name or any other identifying features… even more important than mother. I wouldn’t admit that in the NT world as when I have, I have been corrected (after all Mother is supposed to be my primary identification, right?!) but I feel that I can admit that here” (Taylor).

someone’s life (Brine and Waller, 2004). These lenses often overlap and reinforce one another, and, to extend the metaphor, move in and out of focus at different times. From the many possibilities available to me I have chosen to examine three themes emerging from the data: characterisations of school experience; the timing of the return to study; and discourses of mature studentship (James, 1995). These areas of focus highlight both similarities and differences between the cohort, and as such serve the needs of this paper well. I draw upon four respondents’ testimonies in examining how accounts of experiences under these thematic headings can be compared and contrasted. This demonstrates how the breadth of personal backgrounds and social positions are so diverse as to render bracketing together people under the supposedly unifying heading ‘mature student’ almost meaningless. I further highlight how the four respondents’ different social positioning regarding to class, age, gender and relationship commitments etc. informs – but does not determine – their access to and experiences of, further and higher education.

'I definitely feel more in control of my life': The perspectives of young autistic people and their parents on emerging adulthood

'I definitely feel more in control of my life': The perspectives of young autistic people and their parents on emerging adulthood

Young people varied in their degree of motivation for friendships. Some reported having few, if any, friends and not much desire to pursue such friendships, while others “prefer[red] being around my friends and other people as well” and wished “to have more friends”. Indeed, they were all too familiar with the consequences of being the “odd-one-out” and subsequently “left out” of their peer groups. They described being worried about people thinking “you’re a bit weird, odd, that sort of thing”. Consequently, they desperately wanted “a close group of friends” who “understand me, which is all that matters”, reflecting an emphasis on “friendship quality not quantity”. For those that had disclosed their diagnosis to the “closer friends that I feel I can trust”, they felt reassured by the fact that it “doesn’t really bother them at all, they still treat me the same”.

TEPs discussed the impact of the financial limitations of the course, and this was felt to be a strong source of stress. This strain seemed to impact many areas of their personal lives: “Something that did stand out for me that I think has been a theme throughout has been the financial side of things, I think it just affects so much and on so many different layers, both with kind of the role; of the changes in your personal life, and I think, for me, that's probably the theme throughout that’s been the hardest. Having to struggle financially, and then do all the other million things alongside that. I think if the course were better financially supported for the training, it would make a lot of the emotionally difficult experiences feel more bearable. And, yeah …. it's really hard to juggle that alongside all of the learning.” (Elle, interview 2, line 35)

Of particular interest was also the “hidden disability” which impacted on many older people’s lives such as opening packages for people with arthritis, ineligible or difficult to read print, size of written material and reading print over coloured backgrounds. The quality of life was significantly

"I feel it is mine!" - Psychological ownership in relation to natural resources

"I feel it is mine!" - Psychological ownership in relation to natural resources

“The behavior [of bears] is totally different. They’re sociability, they’re not afraid of humans at all. You take off and two minutes and fifteen seconds later the first bears are there [by the carrion]. They’ve got used to people and there have been some near accidents” (Int. H1) According to the hunters, they have not only the right to hunt bears, but also a responsibility to do so to control the population. Thus, brown bear hunting has a strong impact on the hunters’ identity as big game hunters and protectors of rural life and tradition, human safety, and livestock welfare. This reflects not only aspirations to control the resource but also the self-identity motive of psychological ownership. In addition, according to the hunters, in order to maintain the glamour and appeal surrounding bear hunting and bear hunters, it is also important that the bear itself should retain its species-specific traits. Carrion baiting leads the bears to getting used to permanent feeding, and their predatory skills deteriorate. In this sense, hunters also construct their own identify as protectors of the bears.

The Feel of Life: Resonance, Race, and Representation

The Feel of Life: Resonance, Race, and Representation

—“Lush Life,” Billy Strayhorn, Chrysalis One Music This “feel of life,” as Billy Strayhorn puts it in his classic composition “Lush Life,” resonates in the routine social relations and affiliation that take place “on the axis of the wheel of life.” From another angle of inquiry, I want to elaborate more fully on the suggestion that a key element of the Dodson takes is its potential to show what it feels like to live in the condition of vulnerability and risk, but in a way that mutes, distances, and shields the insecurity from normative perceptions of comfort and security. For viewers’ amusement, distraction, and escape, hundreds of images and performances like the Dodson takes circulate every day on YouTube and Facebook and in social media users’ personal communication networks. 12 Kara Keeling’s (2007) elucidation of the cinematic cliché helps me comprehend more fully the limitations of focusing on the representation of Dodson in a local television newscast and the necessity to redirect attention to the realm of affect. For Keeling (2007), the (Black) cinematic cliché inures viewers to Black images and representations and, through our motor-sensory response, habituates our perception to recall and repeat past associations, meanings, and memories. Because we most often experience Black bodies in the news media as danger, as crime statistics, and as cannon fodder to ensure normative safety and security, we can’t see and don’t recognize these bodies except through the habituated emotions of danger and fear. The racialization of the normative modes of seeing makes it difficult to see past the logic of the neoliberal ordinary even as we see through it. In a culture saturated with images of criminality and suspicion attached to non-normative bodies, it is almost impossible to see young Black men, their lives, and their locales except through the degradations mobilized by affective attachments to danger and fear. 13

Sometimes I Sit and Think [CP], and Sometimes I Just Think So: A Cross-linguistic Overview of Embedded Polarity Particles

Finally, I have shown that there is independent evidence to conclude that ellipsis occurs after the embedded polarity particles so and not, as they behave like instances of VP ellipsis and not VP proforms when it comes to the licensing of missing antecedents and new idiomatic readings. Importantly, this behavior cuts across typological differences in languages, holding whether or not the language requires a complementizer before embedded polarity particles and whether or not it has a separate set of particles for embedded contexts. Furthermore, I presented connectivity effects from Wambeek Dutch suggesting that bare polarity particles are accompanied by an elided TP.

Sometimes Enemies, Sometimes Friends

Sometimes Enemies, Sometimes Friends

Abstract Political polarization and the growing power of the presidency have created new incentives for political actors in the realm of foreign policy that have not existed prior in American his- tory. I argue that these new incentives in formulating foreign policy has created repeating and predictable trends in how America relates to various regime types (here meaning all ruling governments, regardless of political system) due to shared ideological concerns. The foreign policy pushed by the Democratic Party places emphasis on democratization and human rights in the post-September 11th period, which leads to improved relations between America and like- minded liberal left-leaning regimes. Similarly, Republican Party foreign policy, which prioritizes security above democratization and human rights promotion, allows for improved ties between America and like-minded right-leaning regimes. Through examining the case studies of Amer- ican relations with Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines in the post-September 11th period, I find that American relations with liberal democracies - Indonesia, the Philippines pre-Duterte - improved with the Obama administration’s foreign policy, and have worsened under the Bush and Trump foreign policies. Likewise, American relations with authoritarian nations - Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines under an increasingly-brazen Duterte - have improved with Republican Party foreign policy, especially in the areas related to security at the cost of democratization efforts and human rights promotion.
