“Synthesis of Novel Benzimidazole Derivatives with Expected Antitumor Activities” by Sherifa M.Abu-Bakr, Nagwa M. Fawzy, Mohamed Bekheit, Hanaa M. Roaiah, Magdy S. Aly, Egypt.

Refluxing a mixture of chloroacetic acid with 3,4-diaminobenzophenone to give 2-chloromethyl imidazole1. When mercaptoacetic acid was reacted with compound 1,5-benzoyl-imidazole, compound 2 was obtained. Also, thiazino-benzimidazole3 was obtained by the reaction of compound2 with acetic anhydride/pyridine. Thiazinobenzimidazolone -dioxide4 was yielded upon stirring compound3 in glacial acetic acid/hydrogen peroxide (Scheme 1). Stirring a mixture of acetyl acetone and chloromethylimidazol1 in absolute alcohol gave benzoyl-benzoimidazolyl5. When compound 5 was refluxed with a solution of urea and/or thiourea, pyrimidine derivatives 6a,b were obtained. Whereas, the reaction mixture of 6b with methylisocyanate and/or phenyl isocyanate, yielded dimethyl-pyrimidine derivatives 7a,b. Refluxing a mixture of compound 5 and 2-cyanoacetamide and/or 2- cyanothioacetamide resulted in pyridine carbonitrile derivatives 9a,b. Also when compounds 6b and/or 9b were reacted with methyl iodide, pyrimidine 8 and nicotinonitrile 10 were obtained respectively (Scheme 2). The reaction mixture of compound 1 with5-chlorobenzo[d]oxazole-2-thiol, 2-(methylthio)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole, 5-methyl-2-methylthio-1H-benzo[d]imidazole, 2- (methylthio)-1H-pyrimidine or 2-(furan-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole was stirred to yield imidazolyl-methanone derivatives 11- 15(Scheme 3). In the present investigation, the newly synthesized products were screened (using the MTT colorimetric assay) for their in vitro inhibition capacity in two human cancer cell lines (hepatocellular carcinoma (HEPG2) and breast cancer (MCF-7)) in comparison to the known anticancer drugs: 5-Flurouracil and Doxorubicin. The anticancer activity results indicated that the synthesized products 6a, 9b and 10 showed growth inhibition activity against HEPG2 cell line and synthesized products 2, 9a, 9b, and 12 showed growth inhibition activity against MCF-7, but with varying intensities extents in comparison to the known anticancer drugs, 5-Flurouracil and Doxorubicin.

The extracted dye from mango seed kernel agronomical bio-waste was successfully employed for dyeing of cellulosic fiber. Cotton knitted single jersey fabric which investigated in this study deliver light medium to dark shade. This study revealed the dyeing time and temperature both have significant effect on shade and tones. The optimized colorimetric and serviceability were found for the specimens which were colored at 100℃ for 60 minutes. Light fastness was not satisfactory. For prolong dyeing time and temperatures have adverse effect on all colorimetric properties which corresponds to degradation of dye molecules. From all color fastness properties it can be clinched that mango seed kernel dye can be applied from the fabric where the importance of light fastness is negligible. Further investigation for improvement of light fastness, serviceability and colorimetric properties mordanting and proper extraction of natural dye can be carried out.

These kind of assays are relying on single strand oligonucleotide sequences, and aptamer has been widely used as a suitable molecule for detecting the target [5, 6]. Single-strand DNA or RNA sequences can bind on the surface of GNP through the coordin- ation between gold and nitrogen atoms in the DNA bases [7–9]. The modified GNPs with oligonucleotide are stable under higher salt conditions. When the ana- lyte is available, oligonucleotide will be separated from the gold and gets aggregated in the presence of diva- lent ions then display the blue solution. The demon- strated GNP assays are cheaper, consuming lesser time for detection, easier to functionalize, and shows the visual detection with a good sensitivity [10–14]. Due to these positive attitudes, GNP-based colorimet- ric assays have been extended for the detection of smaller molecules including DNA, RNA, protein, whole cell, and metal ions. Several aptamers were available to detect these analytes by using the simpli- fied aptamer GNP-based colorimetric assays, showing the red spectral shifts [15–19].

Chromone and its analogs have proved for potentially great importance in medicinal chemistry and drug development. They come from a wide variety of natural sources and new chromone derivatives are being discovered or synthesized on a regular basis. Chromone is a simple molecule and many of its derivatives have been known for more than a century. The current study has outlined the chemistry and anticancer activity of some chromone derivatives. It could be concluded from our work that synthesized products have high cytotoxic activity against both types of liver and breast cancer cells subjected in this study. The above mentioned results revealed that the materials under investigation have killing potency to the cancer cells with low concentrations and can be arranged in the following order: 2a > 3f > 3c > 3b.

The application of plasmonic nanomaterials can be categorised into plasmonic and non-plasmonic systems [49]. In plasmonic systems, metal nanoparticles (NPs) are considered as a plasmonic probes which have a suitable inter-particle distance, smaller than the diameter of particles to generate plasmonic coupling of particles. A visible color from red to blue can be produced variously with colorimetric detectability (Figure 4). An advanced example of plasmonic nanomaterials is direct aggregation, without specific ligands between a single-stranded primer DNA, and its adsorption on citrate-coated Au gold nanoparticles. On the other hand, indirect aggregation can be used to detect viruses through modifying virus targeting molecules on virus surfaces. The challenging key to this technology is controlling particle aggregation in a reproducible manner. This can be improved using a protein-glycan pairing relying on the multivalence properties of glycan to improve weak protein detection of viral surface proteins. Another advanced improvement is signal amplification using catalytic or DNA enzymatic assays, such as alkaline phosphatase catalyst, and DNA enzymes to provide rapid detection of virus sequences.

Many behaviors and physiological processes oscillate with circadian rhythms that are synchronized to environmental cues (e.g. light onset), but persist with periods of ~24 h in the absence of such cues. We used a multilevel experimental approach to assess whether circadian rhythms modulate several aspects of the visual physiology and behavior of the praying mantis Hierodula patellifera. We used electroretinograms (ERGs) to assess compound eye sensitivity, colorimetric photographic analyses to assess compound eye color changes (screening pigment migration), behavioral assays of responsiveness to computer-generated prey-like visual stimuli and analyses of locomotor activity patterns on a modified treadmill apparatus. Our results indicate that circadian clocks control and/or modulate each of the target behaviors. Strong rhythms, persisting under constant conditions, with periods of ~24 h were evident in photoreceptor sensitivity to light, appetitive responsiveness to prey- like stimuli and gross locomotor activity. In the first two cases, responsiveness was highest during the subjective night and lowest during the subjective day. Locomotor activity was strongly clustered around the transition time from day to night. In addition, pigment migration and locomotor behavior responded strongly to light:dark cycles and anticipated the light–dark transition, suggesting that the circadian clocks modulating both were entrained to environmental light cues. Together, these data indicate that circadian rhythms operate at the cellular, cellular systems and organismal level in H. patellifera. Our results represent an intriguing first step in uncovering the complexities of circadian rhythms in the Mantodea.

A b s t r a c t. Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) is receiving attention recently as a biofuel crop. It has been introduced as drought resistant, but few quantitative data concerning its tolerance have been presented. We evaluated the tolerances of Jatropha to drought and salinity stresses in terms of parameter values in the widely used macroscopic root water uptake model. With such para- meter values, root water uptake under stresses can be accurately predicted, which may contribute to efficient water management in arid and semiarid regions where irrigation is required to attain high yield. We conducted a column experiment using five columns with one plant each: three were under stresses, the others provided potential transpiration. Three TDR probes were inserted into each of the two columns to observe water content and electrical con- ductivity. The soil surface was covered to prevent evaporation. Weight of the columns was manually measured to obtain daily transpiration. After the stress period, root density distributions were obtained by dismantling the columns. Three parameter values were inversely determined by minimising the sum of square diffe- rences between observed and calculated daily transpiration rates. Water uptake at each depth and time was calculated by substituting linearly interpolated matric and osmotic potentials into the stress response function. Optimized daily transpiration rates agreed well with the observations. Determined stress response functions indi- cate that Jatropha is not more tolerant either to drought or to salinity compared to other major crop such as soybean or wheat.
