The parametric study allowed for the testing of different control scenarios over a long period of time (one year) and against varying meteorological conditions. Energy consumption for heating and electric lighting as well as estimation of thermal and visual comfort was the output. Simulations were performed using dynamic thermal simulations code that has been developed by LESO laboratory. The code was modified and expanded to include the EC glazing characteristics, the developed control algorithm, electrical lighting features (modules for the calculation of illuminance levels on desktop and energy consumption) and visual and thermal comfort prediction modules. The model used in all simulations was a simplified 13- node model of a South-facing office room similar to the LESO building room where the EC glazing was installed. North, West and East are partition walls adjacent to other offices and the corridor. Ceiling and roof are also adjacent to other offices. The blinds considered are made of textile tissue and they can roll up (completely open) and down (when closed). For the electric light use, the visual and the thermal comfort we consider the presence of a user only during the working hours with a 9-hour daily schedule of 08.00 to 18.00 with a lunch break from 12.00 to 13.00, from Monday to Friday. Window surface was modeled as a single window instead of the coupling of a window with ADS.

They are already widely used in terrestrial applications such as intelligent sunshades, tinting windows and flexible thin film displays and have been used in space applications, albeit not for orbit control. The recently launched IKAROS solar sailing demonstrator uses electrochromic surfaces on the sail to adjust its attitude [14] and electrochromic radiators have been developed for thermal control [15]. A recent proposal to design the orbits of micro-particles by engineering their lightness number, the ratio between acceleration due to SRP and acceleration due to solar gravity [16], highlights the current interest in the exploitation of orbital perturbations as a means of trajectory manipulation of micro-scale artificial objects using simple control methods.

Florida temperature data show that the annual high temperature is about 81.7 °F. In the warmest month, August, the average daytime temperature rises to 90°F [1]. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the average monthly electricity bill in the United States (U.S.) was $118 in 2018. However, in Florida the average electricity bill was $128, which is 9% higher than the average U.S. total electricity bill [2]. In addition, energy consumption has become an important issue because higher energy use leads to higher environmental pollution. A recent survey by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) shows that buildings consume about 73% of the total electricity in the United States, accounting for 41% of all other energy in the world, while emitting 38% of the total carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year [3]. Modern buildings usually have large facades of windows, known as glazings. Glazings provide good daytime illumination but reduce the energy efficiency of buildings [4]. In particular, cooling has increased significantly in recent years. According to the EIA, energy lost through conventional windows accounts for about 30% of the heating and cooling energy costs [5]. Shadows, blinds, shutters, fins or other mechanized solar control devices are used, but they can cut off connection to the outdoors.
