Personal destination pattern analysis with applications to mobile advertising

Many researchers expect mobile advertising to be the killer application in mobile business. In this paper, we introduce a trajectory prediction algorithm called personal destination pattern analysis ( P-DPA ) to analyse the different destinations in various trajectories of an individual, and to predict a trajectory or a set of destinations that could be visited by that individual. The P-DPA algorithm works on an individual level. Every destination-pattern analysis is related to the self-history and the personal profile of a targeted individual, not on what others do. In addition, we developed a prototype system called SmartShopper. SmartShopper is a personal destination-pattern-aware pervasive system for mobile advertising in (outdoor and indoor) retail environments. The predicted destinations from the P-DPA algorithm will be used by SmartShopper to generate a list of relevant advertisements adapted to the personal profile of previous destinations of a targeted individual. We tested the destination prediction accuracy of the P-DPA algorithm with a synthetic dataset of a virtual mall and a real GPS dataset. This lack of utility may be because of an unstated assumption that the study area which we are trying to characterize is a subset of a much larger, frequently ecological, niche. For example, many of the discussions in Baddeley’s (2015) Spatstat library of R routines are related to the distribution of plants within a subset of a much larger ecological niche. The difference in archaeology is that we are almost invariably dealing with something that is most definitely a cluster on the landscape and we are frequently looking at the entire cluster, so trying to prove it is a cluster is just mathematically demonstrating the obvious. However, what is of significant interest in archaeology is whether or not there is structure within the overall cluster that might provide insight into the habits of the people who occupied it. For example, the Bullbrook Paleoindian site (ca. 11,000 BC) is composed of a series of discrete clusters, each of which are interpreted as being smaller scale individual social units within a larger aggregation site (Robinson et al. 2009). In these cases, a simplistic characterization of the overall site cluster does not shed any light on the really important issues. The analysis of the coarse-grained flake tool-making debris distribution at Davidson included in Chapter 4 is a good example of the analysis of structuring within the overall site cluster. But if so, how can we explain that: a) Jorgenson (1974), on the one hand, and Feldstein and Rothschild (1974), on the other, arrived at diametrically opposite conclusions as to its applicability; b) the papers by Zarembka (1975) and Brown and Chang (1976), on the basis of which the controversy might have been elucidated, went largely unnoticed, and, c) the theorem has come to dominate economic theory and econometric applications? We use a structural Bayesian stochastic search variable selection vector autoregression for seven euro-area countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain) for the period 1980:Q1- 2014:Q4 to provide a systematic structural analysis of the effects of housing demand shocks on economic activity and the role of house prices in the monetary policy trans- mission. A novel set of identification restrictions, which combines zero and sign restrictions, is proposed. We focus on a country by country analysis, given the idiosyncratic characteristics of the housing market in the euro area, which suggest that pooling or aggregating may lead to biased inference and misleading policy recommendations. At the same time, we exploit the cross-sectional dimension of our data, to compare and quantify the degree of heterogeneity of the effects of housing demand and monetary policy shocks across euro area members. In doing so we fill a gap in the literature, largely focused on the US, the UK and the euro area as a whole. Among the main results, we find a comparatively stronger hous- ing wealth effect on consumption in Ireland and Spain, countries having recently experienced a boom-bust pattern in house prices. We provide new evidence in support of the financial accelerator hypothesis, showing that house prices play an important role in the availability of loans. A significant and highly heterogeneous effect of monetary policy on house price dynamics is also documented.

Cervelló-Royo et al. (2015) present empirical evidence which confronts the classical Efficient Market Hypothesis, which states that it is not possible to beat the market by developing a strategy based on a historical price series. They propose a risk- adjusted profitable trading rule based on technical analysis and the use of a new definition of the flag pattern, which defines when to buy or sell, the profit pursued in each operation, and the maximum bearable loss. Empirically, they used a database comprised of 91,307 intra-day observations from the US Dow Jones index and parameterised the trading rule by generating 96 different configurations and reported the results of the whole sample over three sub-periods. They also replicated the analysis on two leading European indexes: the German DAX and the British FTSE, and the returns provided by the proposed trading rule are higher for the European than for the US index. This highlights the more significant inefficiency of the European markets.

Together with a recently developed concept of an arrival-martingale, the proposed service-martingale concept enables the queueing analysis of a bursty source sharing a MAC channel. In particular, the paper derives the first rigorous and accurate stochastic delay bounds for a Markovian source sharing either an Aloha or CSMA/CA channel, and further considers two extended scenarios accounting for 1) in-source scheduling and 2) spatial multiplexing MIMO. By leveraging the powerful martingale methodology, the obtained bounds are remarkably tight and improve state-of-the-art bounds by several orders of magnitude. Moreover, the obtained bounds indicate that MIMO spatial multiplexing is subject to the fundamental power-of-two phenomena.

Recall that in order to include variables measuring a household’s migrants and former members living nearby, the sample had to be reduced to so-called “old” households – those that had at least one member present during a previous wave of the study – because only these households were asked about migrants. All three migration-related variables proved to have no association with either outcome in the modeling, but this was not known a priori, and so the original models are presented, rather than stripped-down models reflecting knowledge gained in the modeling process itself. But as a check against selection bias arising from this particular decision models were re-run without the migration variables on the entire sample of “old” and “new” households with not one coefficient losing or gaining significance and only very minor alterations in the magnitude of coefficients. Sensitivity tests were also run with all “new” households simply coded as having zero migrants and leaving these three variables in the model with the same result. 9 Thus, I am confident that no significant threat to the internal or external validity of the results arises from presenting the original models based only on the sample of “old” households as initially specified.
