Many nations of the world are battling daily trying to meet the needs of its citizenry. The situation in Nigeria is so hard that getting daily meal amidst dwindling economy has become so frustrating. No job for the young graduates, huge business loses incured on a dailly basis as a result of bad roads which has indirectly assisted the armed robbers to disposes the the travellers of their valuables including business money; inadequate finance, inadequate educational infrastructure, poor communication and a host of other challenging issues leading to depressed economy. The foundation of human culture and society has always been communication. The importance of communication cannot be over emphasized for it forms a vital tool on which human race exists. This paper discusses the prospects of GSM in a depressed economy. Data for this paper was obtained through personal interview of subscribers and questionnaires which was administered to three major towns in Ekiti State Nigeria. The data obtained was analyzed using percentage and bar-charts. The result of the study showed that GSM has positive impact on the user, in terms of improved communication, business expansion and hence improved economy.

ABSTRACT: Flood disaster usually happens due to improper irrigation method in a housing area or the sudden increase of water volume in a river. Flood disaster often causes lost of property, damages and life. Since this disaster is considered dangerous to human life, an efficient countermeasure or alert system must be implemented in order to notify people in the early stage so that safety precautions can be taken to avoid any mishaps.This paper proposes architecture for an early warning floods system to alert public against flood disasters. An effective early warning system must be developed with linkages between four elements, which are accurate data collection to undertake risk assessments, development of hazard monitoring services, communication on risk related information and existence of community response capabilities. This project focuses on monitoring water level remotely using wireless sensor network. The project also utilizes GlobalSystem for Mobilecommunication (GSM), Internet of Things(IoT) and short message service (SMS) to relay data from sensors to computers or directly alert the respective victim's through their mobile phone. It is hope that the proposed architecture can be further develop into a functioning system, which would be beneficial to the community and act as a precautionary action to save lives in the case of flood disaster.
Abstract - In the case of a man-made disaster, sometimes the detection is so late that the disaster has already spread widely. The project plans to make a mobile robot that would be able to alert and react to emergency situations. In the recent past, there have been many cases in which the conventional security systems have proven to be a failure. Moreover, current systems are based on Wi-Fi connectivity which is unreliable in the situation of the disaster. The advancement is in the form of GSM (GlobalSystem for MobileCommunication) for communication so that the response is building independent and disaster cannot hamper the working of the system. Further, the real-time sensor data will be transferred to the IoT server via GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) connectivity. The position of the vehicle will be determined by a color sensor which will read the color of the nearby wall skirting.

This information is authorized to specific users over the internet as the server gets the information. It is the tele-mointoring system to transmit data to the remote user. Thus the applications are used in real time traffic surveillance. This paper proposes a prototype model for location tracking using Geographical Positioning System (GPS) and GlobalSystem for MobileCommunication (GSM) technology. The development is based on the windows phone 8 application by means it can provide flexibility and portability for the user to get the information from anywhere. As these GPS technologies having greater range of frequencies, the user can get the information as quicker as possible. This system is very useful to speed control at specific traffic roads.

ABSTRACT:This paper proposes a new procedure to implement a controller based smart prepaid energy meter whichcan also control electricity thefts. The energy meter makes use of the globalsystem for mobilecommunication [GSM]network to include the capability of prepaid metering system and remote load control. A prepaid energy meter isinstalled in every consumer home which makes use of an ARM 7[LPC 2148] microcontroller to calculate the energyconsumed and a server unit is preserved at the service provider side. Mutually the units are well equipped with GSMmodem. LCD display is used to display the amount of energy consumed. The user can recharge the meter as per hisrequirements by sending an SMS to the server. The user needs to make an initial recharge to deal with the issues ofunpaid bills and human error in billing which eventually ensures justified revenue collection.

ABSTRACT: Even though the world has grown big in all means and literacy rate hits almost 100% in many places, atrocities towards women are seldom happening everywhere. Nowadays women have to work independently to support their family and it is not rare that at least a few percent are assigned with overtime jobs. The security issue for such women comes forward because cases of harassment and rapes are increasing day by day. According to census rape is the fourth most common crime against women. The main issue associated with these cases by the police lies in constraints preventing them from responding quickly to calls of distress. The main constraints include not knowing the location of the crime, self-protection for women safety, women who is unable to inform about crime to anyone and so on. In order to overcome this situation the best suitable system for providing safety will be a portable device which the women will be able to carry with them and easy to use. This portable device will generate an electric shock which will make the attacking person to get back. After generation of shock a message will be send to certain contacts stored with the help of GlobalSystem for Mobilecommunication (GSM) and location of those women is traced with the help of Global Positioning System (GPS).This portable device will provide a self-defense for the women at emergency situation.

A new information hotline is giving smallholder farmers across Ethiopia access to best practice agronomic advice revolutionizing traditional agricultural extension. In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), and Ethio Telecom, the 8028 hotline was created by the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA), who placed the extension information typically provided to agricultural Development Agents directly on a technology platform that can be accessed by anyone at any time. Twelve weeks after its launch in the Oromia, Amhara, Tigray and SNNP regions, the hotline has received nearly 1.5 million calls from 300,000 farmers (www.ata.gov-8028-agricultural-hotline- service-revolutionizing-agricultural-extension-in-ethiopia/). The Interactive Voice Response (IVR)/Short Message Service (SMS) system currently provides smallholder farmers free access to information on cereal, horticulture, and pulse/oil seed crops, as well as a wide range of agriculture related activities. Currently 90 service lines connect smallholder farmers to automated and voice recorded information on pre planting, planting, crop protection, postharvest, fertilizer application, processing, irrigation and weather content.
