Beginning Japanese for Professionals: Book 1

Each dialogue has at least two drills that target key grammar patterns and vocabulary. These are rather mechanical drills that are meant to train quick and automatic formation of language. The recommended procedure for these drill practices is to first listen to the two model exchanges and understand what changes to make in responding to the cues. Look at the scripts for the models if you are not sure what to do. Listen to the first cue, insert your response during the following pause, listen to the model answer, and repeat the model answer during the second pause. Repeat this procedure for the following cues. It is recommended that you loop back to the beginning of the drill frequently. Always give yourself a chance to respond to the cues before you listen to the model answer. Also think of the meaning as you do these drills. Needless to say, it doesn't make sense to just keep repeating the sounds you hear without knowing what you are saying.

A note on the cultural significance of pitch is in order. As you learn Japanese, pay attention to pitch at the sentence level as well as the word level. A slight change in pitch may indicate a subtle but significant change in meaning or mood. It is observed in many, if not all, languages that speakers tend to raise their pitch when talking to babies or when trying to sound gentle. Japanese is no exception in this regard. Talking in a high pitch is generally associated with politeness in Japanese. Women tend to talk in a higher pitch, but regardless of the gender, sales and customer service personnel, receptionists, waiters, etc. speak in overall higher pitch. Remember that when something is the norm and expected in a culture and you don’t follow it, you may be sending a certain message inadvertently. Just to be safe, bow, smile, and talk gently.

Book Review: Learning Japanese: Voices of Experience by Belinda Kennett and Yuriko Nagata

Book Review: Learning Japanese: Voices of Experience by Belinda Kennett and Yuriko Nagata

One of the strongest aspects of this book is its careful selection of stories that are very relatable to readers at varying levels of Japanese proficiency. For instance, beginning learners can identify with and gain from the experiences of several contributing authors who described their difficulties in learning Japanese. Some lacked motivation to learn while others became frustrated or discouraged by their lack of progress. But many discovered how helpful it was to learn Japanese organically by incorporating it into their passions, interests, and daily lives. For example, in Chapter 1, Lachlan Jackson describes how he came to Japan during the ‘bubble period’ and taught English but never learned much Japanese. It wasn’t until he witnessed kendo (Japanese fencing) for the first time and passionately pursued it following his return to Australia, that he found the sustained motivation to learn Japanese. In Chapter 5, Bill Fryer details how his love of reading Japanese literature and novels gave him insightful cultural and linguistic

The Pink Book: The Japanese Eroduction and its Contexts

The Pink Book: The Japanese Eroduction and its Contexts

A year later, on January 1, 1962, Okura Mitsugi launched the new com- pany Okura Eiga, which amalgamated half a dozen companies he owned or controlled. Okura Eiga incorporated Fuji Eiga, Daiwa Film as well as Nansei, Kinryu Kogyo and Taiho Kogyo. The latter three were exhibition companies owned by Okura with a total of 35 movie theaters in the Kanto region. The rental studio Fuji Eiga, which formed the core of the new company, had produced films for Shintoho on a regular basis since Okura was appointed president of Shintoho. Daiwa Film was a distribution company for imported films, which had been founded in June 1956 by the merger of four small companies (Gaiei, Toeisha, Star Film and Hansen Shokai) as a result of the finance ministry’s reassignment of the film import system which was still regulated by a quota system. The merger of the four companies led to an inconsistency in management and programming and Daiwa Film soon ran into financial troubles. In order to avoid bankruptcy the company’s president Tokue Seitaro turned to Okura for help. Okura bought most of the stocks and in September 1961 became new president of Daiwa Film. To many in the industry Okura’s take-over of Daiwa Film came as a surprise, but his move was well calculated. At this point the production of the very ambitious war-epic The Pacific War and Himeyuri Corps (Taiheiyo senso to himeyuri butai), which was the second Japanese 70mm film, for which special equipment had to be imported from England, was well under way. Okura was hoping to land a similar success as with Emperor Meiji and the Russo-Japanese War and took quite a risk when he decided to go ahead with the project after quitting Shin- toho. However, in order to recoup the high production costs Okura needed a distribution network. Tokue’s offer came just at the right time for Okura.

An Approach toward Register Classification of Book Samples in the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese

An Approach toward Register Classification of Book Samples in the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese

We have proposed a set of criteria for, and a method of, register classifications for Japanese texts. The important point in the manual annotation is minimizing the fluctuations owing to individual differences. To this end, we have introduced a two-step approach, comprising a typical example extraction step, and an annotation step using the extracted typical examples as a reference. Our experimental results using the book part of the BCCWJ clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of our method; that is, in the first step without reference to the typical examples, the kappa coefficients were less than 0.3, whereas in the second step, the coefficients increased to around 0.6, except for the subjective-objective measure. We plan to extend the proposed approach to include a semi-automatic annotation step, in order to provide useful metric information about style, as part of the BCCWJ.

Exposure to Liability Effect of Transition Rules Beginning June 1, 2013

Exposure to Liability Effect of Transition Rules Beginning June 1, 2013

Example #4 illustrates a rare set of facts where the claim is discovered 30 years after the act or omission date, accrual occurs on the act or omission date, and the transition rules apply. In this example the former 30-year ULP has not yet expired as it started to run from the date of accrual (i.e., in a negligence claim, from the date of damage), however, due to the intersection of the transition rules, the new 15- year ULP runs from June 1, 2013 to June 1, 2028. The two-year BLP runs from discovery and can add two years onto the duration of exposure. This is why the maximum exposure to liability in this example is 32 years.

Beginning at the beginning: Recall order and the number of words to be recalled

Beginning at the beginning: Recall order and the number of words to be recalled

When participants are asked to recall a short list of words in any order that they like, they tend to initiate recall with the first list item and proceed in forwards order, even when this is not a task requirement. The current research examined whether this tendency might be influenced by varying the number of items that are to be recalled. In three experiments, participants were presented with short lists of between 4 and 6 words and instructed to recall 1, 2, 3 or all of the items from the lists. Data were collected using immediate free recall (IFR, Experiment 1), immediate serial recall (ISR, Experiment 2) and a variant of ISR that we call ISR-free (Experiment 3), in which participants had to recall words in their correct serial positions but were free to output the words in any order. For all three tasks, the tendency to begin recall with the first list item occurred only when participants were required to recall as many items from the list as they could. When participants were asked to recall only one or two items, they tended to initiate recall with end-of-list items. It is argued that these findings show for the first time a manipulation that eliminates the initial tendency to recall in forward order, provide some support for recency-based accounts of IFR and help explain differences between single-response and multiple-response immediate memory tasks.

Effect of Beginning Reading Methods and Spatial Spasial Intelligence on the Ability of Reading Beginning (Experimental Study in Grade 1 Elementary Sch

One of the factors that can influence children's reading ability is the children's visual spatial intelligence. In a study conducted by Tjoe (2013: 25), stated that reading in the beginning is very closely related to reading written visually or mentally called iamagery. In the process of reading all the modalities both visal and auditory, this can be seen from the visual ability of the child in reading, understanding directions, understanding of similarities and differences, being able to identify various colors, shapes, words, and having a sense of perception or name others are sensitive to seeing pictures. Therefore, it can be said that children who have high spatial visual intelligence are better than low visual spatial children.

Prevalence of allergic rhinitis based on the SACRA questionnaire among Japanese nursing professionals with asthma

Of the 5,463 nursing professionals that provided written con- sent, 4,761 nursing professionals answered the questionnaire be- fore the deadline for submission. Owing to inadequate responses to Q1 of the ECRHS questionnaire, 127 of the 4,761 subjects were excluded, resulting in 4,634 subjects in the analysis, for an overall response rate of 84.8%. Current asthma was present in 497 (10.7% ; 95% CI, 9.9 - 11.7) subjects (Table 1). Of the 497 subjects, 270 sub- jects had allergic rhinitis, resulting in a prevalence of 54.3% (95% CI, 49.7 - 58.7) (Table 2). The prevalence was not significantly dif- ferent between male and female nurses. Table 3 shows the preva- lence, classification, and severity of rhinitis - related symptoms. The prevalence of rhinitis - related symptoms was also not signifi- cantly different between male and female nurses. The durations of employment as a nursing professional, involving bed - making tasks, and with shift work were not associated with the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (Table 4). Latex allergy was significantly asso- ciated with the prevalence of allergic rhinitis among nursing pro- fessionals with asthma (Table 5).

No Beginning and No End

No Beginning and No End

In order to describe the origin of the "Sea Rocks" I have to reach back to the beginning. Back to time spent exploring creeks as a child, collecting arrowheads and wondering at the layers of earth that had been cut through by the running water and the passage of time, picking up a tumbled river stone and questioning how it got so round and smooth. At the time, I answered these questions with my imagination; the different layers of earth came from exploding volcanoes, and great floods, and the leaves falling. The rocks became round over the course of their journey, as they tumbled down the river bed for thousands of miles, all the way from the mountain tops and arrowheads the remnants of battles fought by lost cultures hundreds of years ago. The weather worn stone, and its ability to record both the subtle, and monumental cataclysmic forces of nature over the span of millions of years, has always fascinated me, just as artifacts of antiquity fascinate me because they act as a physical record of our cultural history. Both tell a story, but in different scales of time.

Designing a safeguarding tool for Japanese professionals to identify, understand and respond to adolescent sexual behaviours

Designing a safeguarding tool for Japanese professionals to identify, understand and respond to adolescent sexual behaviours

Despite growing recognition of the positive link between health and sexuality, the tendency to view any signs of child and youth sexuality as problematic has yet to change significantly, whether in Japan or the UK [4, 7]. This negative framing can result in professionals and par- ents overreacting. Behaviours that may not present an inherent risk to a child or adolescent may be viewed as unhealthy or high-risk leading to inappropriate responses. More commonly, however, lack of confidence or difficulty addressing sexual issues may mean that a professional or parent takes no action even though one is warranted [7].

β-defensin-1 SNPs in Japanese periodontitis

β-defensin-1 SNPs in Japanese periodontitis

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease primarily caused by the infection of dental plaque microorganisms, followed by periodontal tissue destruction after a continuous excessive immune response. There are many factors that initiate and cause the progression of periodontitis, which include not only microbial factors but also other local and systemic factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, smoking, lifestyle, stress, heredity and systemic diseases. Thus, periodontitis is considered to be a multifactorial disease associated with genetic and environmental factors (1). Genetic factors can convey susceptibility to periodontitis and recent reports have shown that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are important variations among the genetic factors that underlie the host response to diseases (2, 3). In general, humans have 2 to 3 million SNPs, which correspond to 0.1% of genomic DNA. SNPs in non-coding regions can affect the regulation of gene expression, and SNPs in coding regions can change protein sequences and often give rise to different biological functions. Many basic and clinical studies have shown the relationship between SNPs and susceptibility to periodontitis (2-4). It has been reported that SNPs of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- and immunoglobulin G Fc receptors (FcR) may
