Drills: Each dialogue has at least two drills that target key grammar patterns and vocabulary. These are mechanical drills that are meant to train quick and automatic formation of language. The recommended procedure for these drill practices is to first listen to the two model exchanges and understand what changes to make in responding to the cues. Look at the scripts for the models if you are not sure what to do. Follow this 4-step procedure: 1) Listen to the first cue, 2) insert your response during the following pause, 3) listen to the model answer, and 4) repeat the model answer during the second pause. Repeat this procedure for the following cues. It is recommended that you loop back to the beginning of the drill frequently. Always give yourself a chance to respond to the cues before you listen to the model answer. Also think of the meaning as you do these drills. Needless to say, it doesn't make sense to just keep repeating the sounds you hear without knowing what you are saying.

A note on the cultural significance of pitch is in order. As you learn Japanese, pay attention to pitch at the sentence level as well as the word level. A slight change in pitch may indicate a subtle but significant change in meaning or mood. It is observed in many, if not all, languages that speakers tend to raise their pitch when talking to babies or when trying to sound gentle. Japanese is no exception in this regard. Talking in a high pitch is generally associated with politeness in Japanese. Women tend to talk in a higher pitch, but regardless of the gender, sales and customer service personnel, receptionists, waiters, etc. speak in overall higher pitch. Remember that when something is the norm and expected in a culture and you don’t follow it, you may be sending a certain message inadvertently. Just to be safe, bow, smile, and talk gently.

Make a clear distinction between knowing the material (Fact) and being able to use the material in spontaneous conversations (Act). You may learn grammar quickly, but it takes a great deal of repetitive practice to develop the skills to speak Japanese in real-life situations. At the end of the day, it doesn’t mean much if you cannot respond orally to a native speaker in a culturally appropriate way no matter how well you can answer grammar questions or recite vocabulary in isolation. In studying Japanese, always keep in mind the objectives and how best to reach them.

One of the most commonly used approaches to governance assessments is the balanced scorecard reporting method developed by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton. Their book, entitled The Balanced Scorecard, outlines a highly effective approach to measuring and reporting on organizational effectiveness. Another excellent source of information on governance, and governance assessments as they relate to information technology (IT), is the IT Governance Institute. Their web site address is www.itgi.org.

No Beginning and No End

No Beginning and No End

In order to describe the origin of the "Sea Rocks" I have to reach back to the beginning. Back to time spent exploring creeks as a child, collecting arrowheads and wondering at the layers of earth that had been cut through by the running water and the passage of time, picking up a tumbled river stone and questioning how it got so round and smooth. At the time, I answered these questions with my imagination; the different layers of earth came from exploding volcanoes, and great floods, and the leaves falling. The rocks became round over the course of their journey, as they tumbled down the river bed for thousands of miles, all the way from the mountain tops and arrowheads the remnants of battles fought by lost cultures hundreds of years ago. The weather worn stone, and its ability to record both the subtle, and monumental cataclysmic forces of nature over the span of millions of years, has always fascinated me, just as artifacts of antiquity fascinate me because they act as a physical record of our cultural history. Both tell a story, but in different scales of time.

Beginning at the beginning: Recall order and the number of words to be recalled

Beginning at the beginning: Recall order and the number of words to be recalled

When participants are asked to recall a short list of words in any order that they like, they tend to initiate recall with the first list item and proceed in forwards order, even when this is not a task requirement. The current research examined whether this tendency might be influenced by varying the number of items that are to be recalled. In three experiments, participants were presented with short lists of between 4 and 6 words and instructed to recall 1, 2, 3 or all of the items from the lists. Data were collected using immediate free recall (IFR, Experiment 1), immediate serial recall (ISR, Experiment 2) and a variant of ISR that we call ISR-free (Experiment 3), in which participants had to recall words in their correct serial positions but were free to output the words in any order. For all three tasks, the tendency to begin recall with the first list item occurred only when participants were required to recall as many items from the list as they could. When participants were asked to recall only one or two items, they tended to initiate recall with end-of-list items. It is argued that these findings show for the first time a manipulation that eliminates the initial tendency to recall in forward order, provide some support for recency-based accounts of IFR and help explain differences between single-response and multiple-response immediate memory tasks.

An Approach toward Register Classification of Book Samples in the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese

Among four criteria in this experiment, the consistency measures for hard-soft, written or spoken and reading difficulty are high in that order, and yielding kappa coefficients around 0.6. As shown in Table 6 below, annotator 1 judged most samples as "rather more written" because they are actually from books, whereas annotator 3 judged many samples as "rather more spoken" because they include some story-telling parts. However, there is not a big difference between annotator 4 and 5. This shows the effectiveness of the second step.

Cell Phone Tracking Evidence. An excerpt from the upcoming book: Cellular Location Evidence for Legal Professionals.

3. The circles and sectors (pie wedges) drawn on maps to present this evidence are based on the idea that an “expert” can demonstrate the area covered by a cell phone by drawing circles or pie shapes on a map where the circles or pie shapes represent the approximate coverage area of a cell tower and that the cell phone will be in the area defined by the circle or pie shape. The idea is that the expert can determine the approximate coverage of a cell tower by comparing the distance between two cell towers, account for a theoretical overlap of tower coverage, and then draw a circle to represent the coverage area of each tower. The basis for this method is that cell towers are sectorized, meaning that a cell tower has more than one antenna, that each of the antennas points in a compass direction defined in degrees, and that the analyst can determine how far those signals reach based on comparing the locations of the adjacent cellular towers. However, data regarding the actual coverage area of the any tower at the time of the incident is not provided by the cellular carrier and there is no method that can be used to determine the coverage of a cell tower at the time of the incident based on historical call detail records. It is not possible to reliably determine the coverage area of a cell tower antenna as it relates to a particular cell phone at the time of a call simply by comparing the distance between cell towers.

Book of Exodus, Session 3 The Plagues Exodus 7 11

Between the call of Moses in Exodus 3 and 6 and the Israelite departure from Egypt in Exodus 12 stands the narrative of the ten plagues. These are the miraculous punishments that afflict Egypt with increasing severity, until; finally, Pharaoh agrees to let the Israelites go. It is by the mechanism of the plagues that the Israelites gain their freedom. Yet this relatively simple story is not nearly as straightforward as it first appears, or as it is usually told.
