To this end the ECE program has developed a progression policy of academic requirements that students must satisfy in order to remain within their major. The requirements of this policy were developed based on historical performance of students who were ultimately unsuccessful in an engineering major. While it is our desire that everyone who enters into an engineering program be a successful graduate, the fact is that some will not be successful. Recognizing the financial impact of extended stays in college past the normal 4 years, we want to be good stewards of the finite financial resources that students and their families have to pay for college tuition. Consequently it is important to intervene early enough in the student’s college education and once it becomes clear that a student will with near certainty not be successful in an engineering major so that a student can select an alternative major and still graduate in four years.

The reason why this is significant is that historically Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was estimated to be just below 300ppm(parts per million), whereas, as the industrial sector start to rise, the Carbon dioxide levels increased up to 400ppm today and rising[6]. Today, with the increase of population, economic growth, and building operations carbon dioxide emission is significantly increasing[3]. Large buildings such as Texas A&M University at Qatar consume more energy taking into account offices, laboratories, air conditioning, and more.

This project allowed me to work with both hardware and develop software that allowed the sensors to record, communicate and transfer the data to be displayed on a computer. The final year projects usually involve drawing upon knowledge previously gained during the degree while also assessing a student skill at researching new information. It was challenging, however carrying out the project in groups of two, sharing the work load, picking up on each other’s strengths and constantly learning along the way resulted in a truly rewarding experience and sense of accomplishment. “Next year once I have graduated I will start work for a large New Zealand design and manufacturing company as part of their Embedded Systems Software Design team. There I hope to put to practice all the knowledge and skills gained throughout my degree to help design and create the most human-centred appliances in the world.”

In the event of an unsatisfactory grade in the project or thesis, the Graduate Committee will appoint a project review committee of three faculty members in the research area of the project but not including the Research Advisor. This committee will independently review the written report and examine the student’s understanding of it in an oral exam. The committee may agree with the evaluation of the Advisor, in which case the student is not advanced to Candidacy, or it may disagree and the student is given time to improve the project or to do a second project with a different advisor. Failure to complete this within the required timetable (see Section 9) may result in disqualification from the Ph.D. program. It is the student’s responsibility to find a faculty member to supervise a second project.

o A student becomes eligible to apply for admission to the ECE major upon completion of Math 1151 and 1172, Physics 1131 & 1132, Chemistry, Engineering 1181 & 1182, and CSE 1222 (or their equivalents). For the admission-to-major selection process OSU grades comprising both the Cumulative Point Hour Ratio (CPHR) and Secondary Point Hour Ratio (SPHR) are considered. The SPHR is the grade point average over all of the courses listed at the beginning of this paragraph. Students must also complete Writing Level I to be admitted to major, but it is not included in the SPHR calculation. First, all students with a CPHR of 3.0 or better are admitted to major. Then for students with a CPHR of 2.0 or better, further admission is based on SPHR. The minimum SPHR for admission is annually adjusted based on the ECE annual admission quota of 230 for enrollment management. However, students with an SPHR below 2.0 will not be admitted, even if the quota is not filled.
