Research and Implementation of Tunnel Lighting Intelligent Control System Based on ZIGBEE Wireless Technology

Aiming at the complicated wiring and serious energy waste of common tunnel lighting, an intelligent lighting control system is elaborated. Main controller of the system uses a fuzzy algorithm to calculate the required value of brightness. The system adopts ZIGBEE wireless network technology to realize the function of intelligent dimming, switching lamp and automatically detecting and positioning lamp fault. To meet energy-saving and intelligence, the overall design plan from the main controller to the coordinator and then to the wireless node (including router and terminal controller) is expounded. The wireless network technology and the designs of hardware and software for coordinator and wireless node are described, and the communication protocol between the coordinator and the main controller was designed. The actual operation results of the 5 tunnels in Hunan indicate that the system can meet the requirements of tunnel lighting and ensure the safety of traffic. Energy crisis is one of the biggest threats to whole world in recent years. The light units make large part of energy consumption all over the world. The energy consumption by the light unit’s cannot be ignored as these units consume about 20 % energy of world’s total energy consumption. The innovation of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) is significantly attenuating the energy consumption of a light. This is because the LED lighting device consumes half energy as compared to energy consumption of fluorescent lighting device. The intelligent lighting control system can bring down energy consumption by controlling the intensity of light through situation awareness. Situation awareness is user movement and surrounding light illumination. The light intensity of a particular room is measured using a light sensor (BH1750) where the direct lux value is observed. Sometimes the light intensity of surrounding is sufficient, and user has no need to turn on light. In some cases, the surrounding light will be lesser, therefore to achieve the required illumination the lamp starts glowing and matches with the atmospheric light conditions. Therefore power management system for light control is needed in order to save energy. The existing lighting control systems can support only simple on/off of light according to user’s presence. These systems are not suitable to the places such as house and office, because house and office user satisfaction is more important factor than cost benefits due to energy saving. The program that controls the system is designed primarily to avoid wasting energy. The embedded system based on CAN bus protocol for two wire remote monitoring and controlling of lighting networks is presented. The embedded system was implemented in a small prototype lighting network with three fluorescent lamps, one HBLED lamp, and two environment sensors namely occupancy and daylight sensor were used. According to obtained results the proposed system performed established network functions successfully, allowing the implementation of a novel fully functional CAN bus lighting network with a reliable remote control.
