With the outgrowth of Internet of Things, some new technologies, such as Smart Planet, Intelligent Transportation and Smart Bank are being developed. Every aspect of our life is becoming more and more intelligent. Internet of Things, which is an application concept, expands the traditional network to more broad areas and constantly produces amazing applications. The project is aimed to develop a solution using cheap resources of computation to achieve this smart home automation terminology. IoT Smart Home Automation System, is not a simple extension of traditional smart home automation system but a better replacement in few aspects. The project is an environment in which IoT – Internet of Things and Android &/or a Web application are interlinked in such a fashion that the whole system in simple to understand, easy and cheap to implement and moreover provides an openness approach for further development and adoption. The IoT Smart Home Automation system model makes use of Arduino, which is an existing open source hardware and software platform; an Android app, which is also an existing open source OS platform, popular on mostly on mobile phones; by bridging the gap between these two components to communicate with each other our goal is achieved. Extending Arduino’s capability by introducing the Ethernet shield (extension board) will help to establish the connectivity between the Arduino and Internet, while adding a relay array will make existing not to smart home appliances connect with Arduino, which is connected to Internet, i.e. home appliances will be connected to Internet, thus making them the “thing” of IoT. Moreover, with the help of Ethernet shield hooked on to Arduino, it is possible to make it listen to simple web request, and with controlled CGI programming, this can result in making Arduino a web server which not only can provide a web application to control the connected device but it can also listen and reply to request made by either an Android app or any device connected to Internet and capable of running modern web browser. The Android app will not be able to make simple request of current status but can send new program or schedules over-the-air making the whole system smarter. This system is majorly aimed for independent individuals, senior citizens and individuals who needs more control rather than monitoring.

Due to this, some appliances failure due to over voltage. Here, we are using some components to control from overflow voltage. In this model we use micro controller (ATMEGA328P), is connected to the nodemcu, 4-channel relay board and liquid crystal display (LCD). Here the input is given to the micro controller through the LCD to display temperature. The output of this signal is given to the micro controller which in which a pin becomes active when any obstacle is finding the room temperature. 4-channel relay board is connected to control the large appliances, meanwhile we are connecting switches to operate and nodemcu(Wi-Fi module) to control with remote access.

This project focuses on designing a application which will be very simple and easy for home automation as well as a security system on Raspberry Pi. The codes of the same is generated in python environment which is by default programming environment of Raspberry Pi. LED’s are used as an indication for the switching action. Home automation system can also be implemented on Raspberry Pi which includes a smart doorbell, locking system, automated lighting system, temperature & humidity controller which turns on fan or air conditioner automatically or increases the speed of the fan automatically under the given conditions. The later part of the project focuses on the security system which includes gas and smoke detectors which will work in case of a gas leakage and fire respectively. In case of a gas leak or fire, windows of the house will be opened automatically and also an alert message will be sent through SMS to the user. The doors, windows, lights, fans and other household appliances will also be controlled from any point of the world by the user through cloud services or android applications. Python codes are required for interfacing each senses and a prototype of smart home can be developed.

The characteristic of seamlessness in technologies makes them monolithic and inflexible to the extent that it becomes virtually impossible to adapt these technologies to anything other than preconfigured actions. This is one of potential shortcomings in using current, preconfigured, seamless IoT systems. Some of the strengths of IoT systems are the capacities for context-aware learning and sticking to scheduled automatic behavior (e.g. lights that turn on automatically at sunset). But in situations where unexpected phenomena in domestic life render the automation obsolete, complicated or time-consuming existing modes of interaction for re-configuring automation create lower trust in the system among users. A study conducted on the usage of the nest thermostat system by Yang and Newman [8] highlights that users do not always trust the intelligence and automatic learning capacities in the system. Further, the authors propose interaction strategies for future development of domestic technologies such as the strategy of “exception flagging” where users are able to prevent smart home systems from learning certain user behaviors that may be unique to particular circumstances, and “constrained engagement” where the system is designed for short, informative interactions given that users are unwilling to engage with thermostat setups for extended interactions (ibid).
