A simple biological imaging system for detecting viable human circulating tumor cells

Here, we report what we believe to be a new approach to visually detect live human CTCs among millions of peripheral blood leukocytes, using a telomerase-specific replication-selective adenovirus expressing GFP. First, we constructed a GFP-expressing attenuated adenovirus, in which the telomerase promoter regulates viral replication (OBP-401; TelomeScan). We then used OBP-401 to establish a simple ex vivo method that was able to detect viable human CTCs in the peripheral blood. The detection method involved a 3-step procedure, including the lysis of rbc, the subsequent addition of OBP-401 to the cell pellets, and an automated scan using fluorescence microscopy. OBP- 401 infection increased the signal-to-background ratio as a tumor-specific probe, because the fluorescent signal was amplified only in viable, infected human tumor cells, by viral replication. This GFP-expressing virus-based method is remarkably simple and allows precise enumeration of CTCs.

In the proposed electrochemical deburring system, the brass gears move in the rotating barrel during the deburring process such that the total reaction current could not be determined. A convenient way to control an electrochemical reaction is to control the applied electrical voltage. When the voltage is increased, the current also increases. The effects of three voltages, 6 V, 8 V, and 10 V, are investigated using the same electrolyte at the same temperature for 3 minutes. Analytical results show that as the voltage increases, the fillet radius increases; this follows Faraday’s Law of Electrolysis. Table 2 lists fillet radius after deburring with different applied voltage and barrel rotational speed.

Our focus in this work has been on recovering the key through efficient procedures, demonstrating that the classification process leaks information about it that can be leveraged by an attacker. However, the ultimate goal is to evade the system, and we have just assumed that knowing the key is essential to craft an attack that evades detection or, at least, that significantly facilitates the process. It remains to be seen whether a keyed classifier such as KIDS can be just evaded without explicitly recovering the key.

A novel method, namely ARDK, was used to detect skin conductance between the left hand and each of 24 special acupoints in patients with QV and healthy controls. The QV patients were further evaluated for the severity of five major signs or symptoms with a five-point scoring system. Our results show that the mean value of ARDK decreases with increasing age in healthy controls and further decreases in patients with QV. The decrease in the age- adjusted mean ARDK values in patients with QV has a sig- nificant positive correlation with the severity of the disor- der.
