Preliminary results on the whole genome analysis of a Vietnamese individual

Preliminary results on the whole genome analysis of a Vietnamese individual

We present preliminary results on the whole genome analysis of an anonymous Vietnamese individual of the Kinh ethnic group (KHV) that was deeply sequenced to 30-fold using the Illumina sequencing machines. The sequenced genome covered 99.8% of the human reference genome (GRCh37). We discovered (1) 3.4 million single polymorphism nucleotides (SNPs) of which 41,396 (1.2%) were novel, (2) 654 thousand short indels of which 35,263 (5.4%) were novel (i.e., not present in the dbSNP and the 1000 genomes project databases). We also detected 10,611 large structural variants (length ≥ 100 bp). This study is our initial step toward large-scale genome projects on Vietnamese population.

more evident as it is necessary to reanalyze the TACTs under a different view. The different indications have completely different underlying physiopathology; as a consequence, they maybe are not to be treated with the same TACT. In fact the different techniques possess dif- ferent characteristic allowing managing different situa- tions. Maybe the application of one technique instead than one-other should not be based only on the avail- ability of the most advanced systems but also on the consideration that each technique has a proper effect on the physiopathology. If these preliminary results will be confirmed by subsequent data, this will lead also to an optimization of the resources located to OA manage- ment. Moreover, it would promote future development and researches also regarding the “less technological techniques”.

Non invasive diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis (preliminary results)

Non invasive diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis (preliminary results)

Few studies have examined the validity of the combination of several biochemical parameters measured in ascites fluid in the non-invasive diagnosis of PT. A study by Muhsin Kaya and al 2011, identified serum independent factors that differentiate between PT and carcinomatosis without the use of peritoneal biopsy. The presence of fever> 38 ° C, elevated serum Ca 125, normal serum CA 19-9 and ACE with predominantly lymphocytic exudative ascites had a specificity of 100%, a PPV of 100%; a sensitivity of 88.2% and a VPN of 93.8% for the diagnosis of PT.Our study is one of the first studies to evaluate the validity of the combination of several serum and serum biochemical parameters in the diagnosis of PT. The data analysis yielded 8 biological parameters out of 25 studied whose diagnostic validity was acceptable with sensitivities and specificity> 70%. On the other hand, we found by realizing the different possible associations between these parameters, that the more the number of associated parameters increases the more we gain in specificity and PPV and we lose in sensitivity and NPV. This is explained by the low power of the sample studied. In conclusion and in light of the preliminary results of this study, we can not yet develop a non-invasive diagnostic score of peritoneal tuberculosis, however the results are promising because we could limit the study to 8 biochemical parameters by determining the discriminant threshold value and this among 25 initially studied and whose diagnostic validity is satisfactory. These biochemical parameters are represented by disturbed VS, albuminemia<32.65g / l, Albumin ascites> 22.05 g / l, Cholesterol ascites> 0.69, LDH> 249, Protidemia<69.5 g / l, Ascites lymphocyte> 375.5e / mm3, ascitesleukocytes> 545 e / mm3. Based on these we can continue the study.

DECOMPOSITION OF TARS IN MICROWAVE PLASMA – PRELIMINARY RESULTS

DECOMPOSITION OF TARS IN MICROWAVE PLASMA – PRELIMINARY RESULTS

The paper refers to the main problem connected with biomass gasification - a presence of tar in a product gas. This paper presents preliminary results of tar decomposition in a microwave plasma reactor. It gives a basic insight into the construction and work of the plasma reactor. During the experiment, researches were carried out on toluene as a tar surrogate. As a carrier gas for toluene and as a plasma agent, nitrogen was used. Flow rates of the gases and the microwave generator’s power were constant during the whole experiment. Results of the experiment showed that the decomposition process of toluene was effective because the decomposition efficiency attained above 95%. The main products of tar decomposition were light hydrocarbons and soot. The article also gives plans for further research in a matter of tar removal from the product gas. Keywords: tar, gasification, microwave plasma.

On the dynamic analysis of a novel snake robot: preliminary results

On the dynamic analysis of a novel snake robot: preliminary results

Abstract. In recent years, modular robotics has become of great interest in the robotics community. Among them, snake robots are among the most flexible and versatile type of mobile robots, well-suited to a large number of applications, such as exploration and inspection tasks, participation to search and rescue missions etc. The present paper investigates the design of a novel snake robot, named Rese_Q01, currently being designed at Politecnico di Torino. In order to characterise the dynamic be- haviour of the robot, a simple vehicle dynamics model is developed and basic simulations are carried out for a first implementation of a unit consisting of two modules. Preliminary results show the influ- ence of the robot velocity on the trajectory curvature radius, as well as the effect of different ground/tire friction conditions. This analysis is the first step in order to develop effective control strategies for robot trajectories.

The demand factors for cesareans in Portugal – some preliminary results

The demand factors for cesareans in Portugal – some preliminary results

The most relevant result is the evidence that induced demand for cesareans may exist in Portugal. This comes from the positive and significant coefficient of the number of doctors. Accordingly, the increase of one doctor results in an increase of cesarean rate by the factor equal to the estimated coefficient 0,007322.

Ionospheric response to solar EUV variations: Preliminary results

Ionospheric response to solar EUV variations: Preliminary results

To conclude, in this first approach we have found that the CTIPe model is able to reproduce the observed iono- spheric delay. The results, however, are only preliminary. In further studies with more realistic EUV changes, we will also analyse photodissociation and ionization processes of atomic oxygen, molecular oxygen, and molecular nitrogen in more detail to check the validity of the results by Jakowski et al. (1991). Furthermore, we will investigate the delay in the different ionospheric parameters on different timescales by varying various model components (dissociation, ionization) thereby investigating the physical processes responsible for the delay.

Development of the Global Disability Scale (Glo.Di.S): preliminary results

Development of the Global Disability Scale (Glo.Di.S): preliminary results

Discussion: The results of the current study suggest that the Glo.Di.S. has the potential to serve as a reliable and valid tool for assessing functioning and disability. Further research is needed to prove that it could be useful across countries, populations and diseases, and whether it provides data that are culturally meaningful and comparable. It can be used in surveys and in clinical research settings and it can generate information of use in evaluating health needs and the effectiveness of interventions to reduce disability and improve health.

The HCV Synthesis Project: Scope, methodology, and preliminary results

The HCV Synthesis Project: Scope, methodology, and preliminary results

A recent qualitative review showed that studies of strate- gies to prevent HCV infection in IDUs had inconsistent results, with few examples of interventions that reduce HCV transmission. Moreover, the majority of studies had small sample sizes [11]. Most HCV prevention efforts thus far have used strategies shown to decrease HIV transmis- sion in drug users, including drug treatment, voluntary counseling and testing, and needle exchange programs. It appears that their effect on HCV infection may be attenu- ated by several factors, particularly that HCV is more highly prevalent than HIV in IDU populations so that the probability of injecting with an HCV-infectious IDU is greater than injection with an HIV-positive injector. Addi- tionally, there are many more materials used to inject or prepare drugs that may transmit HCV infection in the injection setting. Specifically, the shared use of syringes has been demonstrated to transmit HIV and HCV, but other equipment used to prepare drugs for injection (drug cookers and filtration cotton) may also transmit HCV [15- 18]. Nonetheless, despite the lack of evidence showing an individual-level effect of various prevention strategies on risk of HCV infection, declining HCV prevalence has been observed in settings where comprehensive HIV preven- tion for drug users is widely available (such as large-scale syringe exchange and access to drug treatment) [19,20]. Altogether, the published literature suggested that a syn- thesis of research on the epidemiology and prevention of HCV in drug user populations was needed to examine eti- ologic factors and drug or sexual practices that may reduce risk of HCV transmission, and to identify gaps in the liter- ature.

current velocity, current direction and SWH sampled at the same time and location. The statistics of current velocity computed over the whole data set are characterized by a RMS difference smaller than 12 cm/s and a correlation coefficient greater than 0.80. Compared to previous values reported in the literature (Recent studies show significant variability in the results, with RMS differences between radar and other platforms ranging between 5 and 20 cm/s [14–16]), the RMS values are in the same spectrum but definitely at the smaller end. The current direction value estimated by TDMF radar meets the demands of the ocean researchers.

Transformational leadership in Romania’s education system: preliminary results

Transformational leadership in Romania’s education system: preliminary results

The present study focuses on a sample of 118 leaders from over 70 Romanian pre- university and higher education institutions. Based on a non-probabilistic sample, the survey is not representative for the entire Romanian field of education, but it still emphasizes interesting results on leadership culture in a country where education leaders are facing multiple challenges such as frequent legislative and curriculum changes. We investigate the correlations among several socio-demographic variables (i.e. gender, age, type of education institution and length of service in leadership positions) and the leaders’ favourite practices. Our results suggest a preference of the education leaders towards full- range leadership practices, which is to be confirmed by further research.

Microwave facilities for welding thermoplastic composites and preliminary results

Microwave facilities for welding thermoplastic composites and preliminary results

Test pieces of other materials were found to have 20 mm from both sides of the interface as their respective HAZs and this was totally due to the amount of graphite powder applied. When the exposure time was increased to 5 seconds, the graphite powder flashed resulting in a burnt zone formed at the interface between the test pieces. The graphite powder was over- heated and glowed as a result of ‘thermal runaway’ due to localised heating of the test pieces. Tensile tests were carried out with the successfully welded test pieces and it was found that the bond strengths of all materials ranged from 8.5 % to 24.3% of those of the respective parent materials. Results are shown in Figure 6.
