A programmable logic controller is a digital computer used for automation of typical industrial electro-mechanical processes such as control of machinery on factory assembly lines, amusement rides, or light fixtures. PLCs are used in many machines in industries. PLCs are designed for multiple arrangements of digital and analog inputs and outputs, extended temperature ranges, immunity to electrical noise and resistance to vibration and impact. Programs to control machine operation are typically stored in battery-backed-up or non-volatile memory. A PLC is an example of a “hard” real-time system since output results must be produced in response to input conditions within a limited time, otherwise unintended operation will result. Early PLCs were designed to replace relay logic systems. These PLCs were programmed in ladder logic which strongly resembles a schematic diagram of relay logic. This program notation was chosen to reduce training demands for the existing technicians. Other early PLCs used a form of instruction list programming, based on a stack based logic solver. Modern PLCs can be programmed in a variety of ways, from the relay-derived ladder logic to programming languages such as specially adapted dialects of BASIC and C.

This paper is to present the initial steps in the implementation of a smart traffic light control system based on Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) technology. We, in this method, intend to measure the traffic density by counting the number of vehicles in each lane and their weight, then pass them or diverge them accordingly. It is also difficult for a traffic police to monitor the whole scenario round the clock. So, this system can be implemented on highways and city traffic.

Simulation for the PLC programming is done by using Automation Studio 5.0. Programming in forms of ladder diagram is simulate using the software to make sure that the programming is working. The improved programming was done to compensate with the hardware specifications. The usage of PLC makes the control system flexible and available for further improvements. Therefore, this project has potential to be further improved into a more complex manufacturing system.

The initial PLC training units were based on the Automation Direct DL205 controller. The controller was configured with a single 8-point DC input module, a single 8 point relay output module, a combination analog module with four input channels and two output channels, and a RS-232 serial port available by way of an RJ-11 connector on the processor module. A series of toggle switches and push buttons provided five discrete inputs to the PLC while four status indicators served as outputs. In addition, a potentiometer functioned as the single input to the analog module while two test points were connected to the analog output channel thus allowing students to measure the analog output voltages.
