census. For example, the spring School Census collects information on absence during the previous autumn term. Absence data for the 2012/13 year have been derived by linking pupil records collected in the spring 2013 School Census, summer 2013 School Census and autumn 2013 School Census to derive overall annual totals for the number of possible sessions; the number of sessions missed by reason for absence and the number of sessions missed due to authorised and unauthorised absence for each enrolment. Derived annual absence totals have been linked to a pupil’s characteristics data at the time of the absence. Where characteristics data are missing, information collected in the following census have been used, except for ethnicity which is only collected in the spring School Census.

At the same ceremony, Irish historian, Margaret Mac Curtain, musician John Sheahan from The Dubliners, and the former chief executive of the Finnish Association of the Deaf, Dr Liisa Kauppinen, were conferred with honorary degrees in Trinity in recognition of their outstanding achievements. In June 2012, while Aung Sang Suu Kyi visited Dublin to receive the Freedom of the City and attend the Electric Burma concert, she was awarded an honorary degree by the university.

Agency Board Meeting 12 November 2013

SEPA is subject to the Public Sector Equality Duty which sets both a General Duty and Specific Duties (making SEPA a listed authority) under the Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties) (Scotland) Regulations 2012. In April 2013, we published our first mainstream report and established five equality outcomes. This measure will record, on a quarterly basis, the progress made against the planned activities to improve accessibility to our flood warning service in relation to the protected characteristics of disability, race and age. The initial milestone was to develop an equalities outcome planning table and a performance record table and thus identify key activities for the 2013-2014 period (June 2013).

SRA BOARD 28 November 2012

SRA BOARD 28 November 2012

22. The LSB has some sympathy with the Law Society’s position that the current sunset clause should be replaced with another longer one. However, to try to avoid a situation where there is insufficient information to make sensible long term provision for compensation arrangements, on balance, we consider that the change should not be time bound. The legislative process required to make this type of modification would require policy decisions to be made in 2013 for implementation on 1 January 2015, this may still be too soon for long term solutions to be found. Even if a longer period was chosen there remains the possibility that the evidence for a different long term solution may not be found and may require yet another extension to the sunset clause.

With the outbreak of the Libyan crisis in February 2011 all ongoing cooperation contracts were technically suspended and no new operation signed. A review of the focal areas and individual activities of the NIP will be undertaken with the new authorities at the appropriate moment.

The Impact of Small Pass-through Wetlands and Stormwater Retention Ponds on Dissolved Organic Matter

The Impact of Small Pass-through Wetlands and Stormwater Retention Ponds on Dissolved Organic Matter

At the influent and effluent of each wetland and retention pond, three replicate grab samples were collected seasonally from the summer of 2012 to the spring of 2013. Summer 2012 samples were collected from July 24 to September 15. Fall 2012 samples were collected from November 1 to December 1. Winter samples were collected from February 23 to March 10. Spring 2013 samples were collected from May 1 to May 9. All samples were collected during base flow conditions and storm events were purposely avoided. Samples were filtered in the field through a 0.45 micron nylon membrane syringe filter into a Whirlpak sample bag. The samples were immediately packed in ice and placed in a -20ºC freezer as soon as possible. Dissolved oxygen, conductivity and temperature were also measured at the influent and effluent of each pond using a YSI Model 85 handheld meter.

Year-on response to the Enhancement-led Institutional Review (ELIR)

The university has continued to liaise closely with the Student Union in developing the new Student Faculty Officer role. There have also been meetings with the university, Student Union and sparqs in this respect. Some specific actions taken have included the production of a timeline and revised role description. Six Student Faculty Officers were appointed in 2012/13, and their continuation into Session 2013/14 will be encouraged wherever possible. There has been some particularly good practice developed in the Faculty of Design and Technology with one of the Student Faculty Officers leading a discussion item, following liaison with other student representatives, at the final meeting of the Faculty Quality Enhancement Sub-Committee.

'Islamic' consumers, markets, and marketing : a critique of El-Bassiouny's (2014) 'The one-billion-plus marginalization'

'Islamic' consumers, markets, and marketing : a critique of El-Bassiouny's (2014) 'The one-billion-plus marginalization'

Throughout her article, El-Bassiouny argues that Moslems have a “unique” lifestyle and worldview that differentiate them from non-Moslem consumers. This ‘exceptionalist’ (Al-Azmeh, 2006) approach to Moslems implies that they are fundamentally different from other societies and ‘Islam’ is a strong demarcation criterion for such distinction: “It is important to note, in this respect, that the diverse adherents to the Islamic faith have a very specific life outlook and buying characteristics that are directly related to their strongly-held religious beliefs” (El-Bassiouny, p.43). Based on this uniqueness, then, the author develops a series of positive hypotheses implying that the Moslem consumer, marketer, and educator “who are high on religious personality” are more likely to be socially responsible and ethical, and demonstrate higher levels of consideration for transcendental values through market practices and behaviors, and marketing education (see pp. 46-47). Her distinction even goes beyond the dichotomy of the religious and non-religious to differentiate between Moslems and the followers of other religions because their religiosity is “different from the Judeo- Christian framework” (p.45). Such exceptionalism, as already criticized by other scholars (Sandıkcı, 2011; Jafari, 2012; Jafari & Süerdem, 2012; Sandıkcı & Jafari, 2013; Süerdem, 2013), represents Moslems as distinct market actors whose everyday life engagement with the market and marketing practices are governed by a series of rigid Islamic principles; hence, marketing and business practices serving or addressing these individuals should be fundamentally distinct from their non-Islamic counterparts.

Analysis of Secondary Grade Mathematics Question Papers of Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education in Punjab

Analysis of Secondary Grade Mathematics Question Papers of Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education in Punjab

The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of mathematics question papers of Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) for grade 9 and 10 (secondary level) as per national curriculum 2006. The BISE question papers in the subject of mathematics of grade IX-X for the two academic years 2012 and 2013 were analyzed in terms of the weightage of different cognitive abilities suggested in the national curriculum. The analysis was made on the basis of the basic principles of test item construction found in literature and the weightage of various cognitive abilities narrated in national curriculum. It was found that question papers were largely assessing students’ lower cognitive abilities (knowledge and comprehension); a few items were assessing higher cognitive abilities (application and analysis). Since the cognitive abilities of synthesis and evaluation were not desired to assess in the national curriculum (2006) of mathematics, so these were ignored. Some of the questions were weak in terms of language and format/style. The study suggests that teachers should be aware of the national curriculum document with special reference to assessment and BISE should organize intensive training for teachers in test item construction, especially those involved in developing mathematics question papers for BISE.

Legal Aid Board Annual Report 2012

Legal Aid Board Annual Report 2012

As noted earlier, it has been a regular refrain of the Board that there needs to be overall coherence in terms of accountability, governance, finance and inter-dependence in relation to legal aid generally. This has been a matter that has long been accepted by the current Minister and initial steps have been taken to transfer responsibility for criminal legal aid to the Board. Two of the ad hoc schemes are already with the Board with the main scheme awaiting the necessary legislation. Government has also approved the transfer of the Mental Health Commission legal aid scheme to the Board and this, too, awaits legislation. 2013 is certainly likely to present considerable challenges. The most significant is the budgetary one and our capacity to meet the demand on the civil law side. Being successful in having a greater number of cases resolved through mediation rather than through the courts is also not resource-free. There will be challenges too in extending the Board’s remit in criminal legal aid, Mental Health Commission legal aid and further developments on the civil law side. The Board is determined to ensure that the extra responsibilities taken on and challenges faced will be addressed with the same commitment, resolution and professionalism that we bring to bear on an ongoing basis to all our work.
