SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH

In recent years, we have noticed that more students need to support themselves financially at the same time they are in school. While it is not a requirement that organizations pay interns, and many non-profit organizations are unable to do so, some type of stipend or reimbursement for expenses is increasingly necessary to enable students to participate in their internship. We would greatly appreciate if you could consider some amount of assistance for the intern if at all possible.

SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH University of Virginia

U.Va.’s School of Public Health will act as the focal point for new public health initiatives that involve faculty and students from across the University. As the essential link between patient care and healthy communities, U.Va.’s School of Public Health will complement and partner with the School of Medicine as well as other schools in the University to marshal the creative energies of a wide range of university faculty, government public health professionals, businesses, and community groups to solve health problems that require a societal response. For example, in attacking childhood obesity though the public school system, faculty in the School of Public Health will work with faculty in the Curry School, the College, the Engineering School, and Darden to create programs that work. The School of Public Health will leverage and expand U.Va.’s nationally recognized expertise in such areas as diabetes, infectious diseases, global health, law, and ethics, strengthening the University’s national and international reputation in public health leadership on emerging issues such as biopreparedness.

Application for the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. Submitted to the Council on Education for Public Health

Application for the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. Submitted to the Council on Education for Public Health

Three PhD programs mark the important collaboration of the planned OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. They include a PhD in Epidemiology, PhD in Health Systems and Policy, and PhD in Community Health. The pathways into these programs typically include completion of a masters degree (such as MPH or MS) before moving on to the PhD. A student may transfer credits to meet credit requirements for the PhD. The faculty committees developed each PhD program within the guidelines of its originating institution; the current admissions standards and degree completion requirements vary reflecting both the institutional and cognate differences among them (see Table 4.9). PhD students are assigned to a core faculty advisor and matched with a mentor. During 2015-16, these degree requirements will be harmonized as the School activities become more centralized as they separate from their original academic units.

Alumni survey of Masters of Public Health (MPH) training at the Hanoi School of Public Health

Alumni survey of Masters of Public Health (MPH) training at the Hanoi School of Public Health

Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH) is a leading aca- demic institution in Vietnam which provides training, conducts research, and informs the policies of the Minis- try of Health in the broad area of public health. Among these tasks, training is considered to be the most impor- tant. In 1995, on direction of the Ministry of Health, the school started developing the Master of Public Health (MPH) program. Since 1996, it has been cooperating with many international experts in applying a pioneering approach in Vietnam entitled "Public health school with- out walls – PHSWOW", as an active member of the inter- national PHSWOW network. Unlike traditional training programs in which field training and practice is poorly emphasized, the School's MPH program lasts two years, of which one is field-based. By 2006, seven cohorts had com- pleted the program with a total of 187 MPH graduates. The initial program intake was about 20–25 students per year. Recently, the school's annual intake ranges from 40 to 50 MPH students including students from the Lao Peo- ple's Democratic Republic and Cambodia.

An examination of the growing US undergraduate public health movement

An examination of the growing US undergraduate public health movement

Respondents from programs housed in schools of public health highlighted the fact that their programs were embedded in schools of public health which offered many op- portunities for students to engage with the school’s larger public health community (faculty, doctoral students, etc.), as well as engage in ongoing public health practice and research activities. However, the key challenge noted by these respondents was gaining the acceptance of undergraduates into a previously graduate-only-focused academic en- tity. Thus, developing courses and activities appropriate for undergraduates and articu- lation between the undergraduate and master’s programs was an ongoing challenge. Additionally, most of these respondents noted that financial, physical, and organizational arrangements between the school of public health and the undergradu- ate campus were often quite difficult. However, collectively, these respondents indicated that although such challenges were ongoing, they were lessening with time as the undergraduate programs became an integral part of the school, both from a cultural (undergraduate students acclimating into the school community) as well as financial (undergraduate tuition revenue becoming a major source of ongoing support for the school) perspective.

Building capacity without disrupting health services: public health education for Africa through distance learning

Building capacity without disrupting health services: public health education for Africa through distance learning

Other evidence of impact has been identified through two external evaluations: in 2006, Professor Carl Taylor assessed the curriculum positively, noting the following qualities: its strong focus on prevention and health pro- motion, which fits the need for traditional health services to move beyond clinical care; that it targets new mid-level managers who most need public health training; its flexi- bility allowing students to work and support their families while undertaking their postgraduate studies; its afforda- bility to students; the combination with short intensive courses on campus without further fees; and the synergy between learning and working, which "becomes learning by doing" [Unpublished report: External Evaluation by Carl Taylor, MD, Dr. PH, FRCP (Canada), Professor Emeritus Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. UWC: SOPH; March 2006].

MSHS(PA)/MPH Program

MSHS(PA)/MPH Program

As the US health care system continues to evolve, market forces and changing personnel requirements create new and expanding roles for health care professionals. The joint Physician Assistant – Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS)/Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at The George Washington University strives to fill the need for a new type of health care professional; one who has both the depth of medical knowledge and the range of leadership and policy skills to meet the challenges of future practice. Based in both the School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) Department of Prevention and Community Health, and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (MSHS) the PA/MPH Program presents a graduate curriculum that blends two important traditional paradigms of health care – the biomedical and the preventive. Health care professionals in the future US health system must be prepared as competent and caring clinicians, as well as bring a broad view of population health and prevention to their work. Graduates of the GWU PA/MPH Program will be leaders in clinical practice in primary care and preventive medicine as well have preparation to assume high level positions in education, research, and policy.
