Offset-continuation stacking: Theory and proof of concept

To these noisy multicoverage data, we applied the OCO stack to construct a stacked section at half-offset h ¼ 100 m. The OCO tra- jectories used for this purpose extend from this initial half-offset to a maximum half-offset of h ¼ 600 m. For the semblance calcula- tions, we used a 11-sample (40 ms) time window and three traces (75 m) to each side of the OCO trajectory in the dip direction. For the search, we allowed velocities between 1.5 and 3.0 km ∕s and event slopes between −1∕1.5 and 1∕1.5 s∕km. Figure 8c shows the result of the OCO stack. We recognize that the OCO stack re- moved the random noise almost completely. All important reflec- tion events are nicely recovered. As a drawback, our present implementation considers only the semblance maximum at each point. Therefore, conflicting dips are not taken into account in the stacked section. Several ideas on how to improve conflict- ing-dip processing have been presented in recent years for CRS stacking ( Mann et al., 2000 ; Mann, 2001 ; Hoecht et al., 2009 ; Aoki et al., 2010 ; Wang et al., 2011 ; Klokov and Fomel, 2012 ), and can be adapted for use in the OCO stack. For comparison, Figure 8d presents the result of a zero-offset CRS stack with an aperture of 1 km in the half-offset and 400 m in the midpoint direction. We see that with only two stacking parameters, the OCO stack has pro- duced a comparable result.

Passive optical network (PON) technology is an economical candidate to deploy small cells such as RRHs densely to boost the capacity of 5G and beyond mobile networks. The most widely used multiplexing technique in PON is time-division multiplexing (TDM) since optical components can be kept relatively simple and cheap. Because, an optical fiber can be shared at an OLT by RRHs, TDM-PON can help reduce the network cost. Moreover, TDM-PON has the property that decreases the network cost as the number of subscribers increases. Hence, the realizations of CRAN using TDM-PON can help procure access lines cheaply, resulting in a cost-effective mobile FH (MFH), in order to address the ultra-densification of small cells in 5G and beyond networks. It is to be noted that for a time-division duplex (TDD) system, the wireless bandwidth for a UE is allocated flexibly in the same frequency band. A TDD system uses different wavelengths in upstream and downstream. Further, neighboring RRHs in a TDD system are time synchronized that use the same wireless frame index in order to avoid the signal collision. This is because the total fiber length from one optical network unit (ONU) to the OLT may differ from the other.

Plasma lipoproteome in Alzheimer’s disease: a proof-of-concept study

VLDL, IDL, LDL, HDL fractions and immunodepleted plasma samples (only depleted of albumin and IgG), each of 60  μL, underwent a delipidation protocol to remove lipids and extract proteins [15]. After delipidation, resulted protein pellets were re-suspended in a denatur- ing buffer (8 M urea and 0.4 M ammonia bicarbonate). Protein concentrations in the VLDL, IDL, LDL, HDL and plasma samples were determined using the BCA Protein Assay kit. The amount of proteins used for subsequent proteomics sample preparation for VLDL, IDL, LDL, HDL and plasma were 6.5, 3, 3, 10, and 10  μg, respec- tively. Protein samples were reduced using 10 mM TCEP (final concentration), alkylated using 12 mM iodoaceta- mide (final concentration), and trypsin digested (pro- tein to trypsin mass ratio was 50:1) at 37  °C overnight. Trypsin digestion activity in the samples was stopped by freezing them for 20 min at − 80 °C. The four isotope labeled tryptic peptide standards were added to each sample (a final concentration of 50  nM per peptide in IDL, LDL, HDL, and immunodepleted plasma samples and of 67  nM in VLDL), which were dried down using speed vacuum for about 3 h. The resulted dried samples were reconstituted in a buffer of 2% ACN and 0.1% FA to reach the final concentration of 0.5 mg/mL (based on starting amount of proteins 10 μg and zero loss) and then desalted using a stage-tip protocol (Additional file 1).

This assumption implies that all production factors are fully utilized. Another implicit assumption that productivity studies usually make is that all producers are tech- nically efficient. The assumptions underlying the use of this approach are con- stant returns to scale of the underlying production technology, competitive equi- librium in both output and inputs markets and Hicks neutrality of technological change. It also implicitly assumes instantaneous adjustment of the quantities of inputs—all production factors are fully utilized and all producers are technically (cost) efficient.

It is of interest to follow the development of “ideas” ex- pressed in the Cann, Stoneking and Wilson (1987) paper, which I have discussed above. A follow-up paper came out after four years (Vigilant et al., 1991), with two former authors, Stone- king and Wilson, along with three new co-authors, absent Cann. This new paper (1991) informs, that the Cann et al. (1987) proposal “that all contemporary human mtDNAs trace back… to the ancestral mtDNA present in an African population some 200,000 years ago” was at first “rejected because of confusion over conceptual issues”, and mentions “perceived weaknesses of the Cann et al. study”. Among those weaknesses the authors (Vigilant et al., 1991) count “it used an indirect method of comparing mtDNAs…; used a small sample made up largely of African Americans to represent Native African mtDNAs; used an inferior method … for placing the common DNA ancestor on the tree of human mtDNA types; gave no statistical justification for inferring an African origin of human mtDNA variation; and provided an inadequate calibration of the rate of human mtDNA evolution”. In other words, its authors recognized the weakness of the paper (Cann et al., 1997) that formed a ground for the “Out of Africa” concept. However, the concept was already accepted by the “consensus”, and it was too late to turn it back. Therefore, the 1991 paper aimed at throwing the Cann et al. (1987) paper out as a weak one, but justified the concept itself.

Ideal temperature sensors have as low a heat capacity as pos- sible to match the temperature of the surrounding environ- ment as fast as possible. The human leg in the wader consti- tutes a significant heat capacity, and, as any experimental hy- drologist can confirm, the thermal insulation the wader pro- vides between the leg and the water is not perfect; i.e., both the body temperature of the wearer of the wader and the heat capacity of the combined wader–leg system can influence the accurate determination of the water temperature using the thermistor. To test the influence of both the heat capac- ity and the body temperature, six experiments were done in a flume in the lab of Delft University of Technology. The waders were first placed in a 40 L bucket of warm water. When the temperature stabilized, the waders were put in the streaming water of the flume. This was repeated with a leg in the wader and without a leg; in the latter case the wader was pressed down into the water using a rod. This was done at three different flow velocities (0.2, 0.17 and 0.38 m s −1 ), creating a total of six experiments. Fast time-resolved aerosol collector: proof of concept

To make a field portable Fast-TRAC, there are a number of challenging technical issues. One of them is making an op- tical setup that stays in sharp focus despite jarring vibrations by the mobile platform. This can be achieved by making the unit very stiff and small, and likely using automated refocus- ing. The auto focusing built into the videocam may be ade- quate. Another issue is optimizing the illumination source of the microscope and increasing the depth of field several fold. The smallest particles that we might be able to detect are not much smaller than 100 nm. For an 100 nm particle, the signal to noise ratio is smaller than that of a 200 nm particle, expected since the scattered light intensity is proportional to the sixth power of the particle diameter for particles smaller than the wavclength (Bohren and Huffman, 1983; Lee et al., 1991), and the exposure time was lower as well. We need to explore the sources of noise where two sequential frames are subtracted. Lower detection limits for particle size may be obtained by using laser diode illumination. Another op- tion is to use the sum of many frames before and after a new particle arrival to artificially increase the exposure time. This will identify smaller particles with reduced time resolution. Full quantitative attention to absolute photo intensities, shot noise, detector readout noise, etc. will be needed to push to the lowest possible particle size. This was not done for this preliminary study. We also did not optimize the objec- tives used. We get the largest field of view possible on to the camera video sensor using the lowest power microscope objective. This maximizes our sensitivity when the ambient particle density is low. But there are also trade-offs involv- ing light intensity, pixel resolution, and depth of field. In our current set-up, either the 50 or 20 power objective works ade- quately for most of our purposes. The optimal one may differ when we use different light sources and other transfer optics. A different approach to improving the limited depth of focus is to operate the microscope as a digital holographic microscope (Antkowiak et al., 2008; Sheng et al., 2006). This involves using a coherent laser diode as the illumination source, and assuring that the image plane has both scattered and unscattered light impinging upon it. This can be done in an imaging mode, where the sample is imaged upon the cam- era image plane, or slightly out of focus, or even in far field (such as with no lens at all). It will be necessary to compare the two approaches, to see if holography offers advantages.

It facilitates determining an organisation‟s capacity for e-business and serves as a tool for guiding strategic planning processes in developing e-business. Having resources such as skilled manpower, technology, appropriate organisational culture, organisational capabilities and learning, and overall organisational commitment in the form of management and administrative support, staff involvement and championship have been identified as constructs of e-readiness (Mia and Dutta 2007; Molla and Licker 2005). The insights from e-readiness studies highlight not only some of the variables but also the importance of e-readiness as a critical capability required to execute in the e-economy successfully. We draw a parallel from e-readiness and argue that Green IT readiness (G-Readiness) could be an equally critical quality required to execute e-business or e-government successfully in the low carbon e-economy.

In practice, this naturally restricts the system call candidates that we can select for kernel fuzzing. To address this issue, we fork the PoC program prior to its execution and per- form kernel fuzzing only in the child process. To illustrate this, we show a pseudo code sample in Fig. 1. As we can observe, the program creates two processes. One is run- ning inside namespaces responsible for triggering a free operation, while the other executes without the restriction of system resources attempting to dereference the data in the freed object.
