Activating the Asta Powerproject client application

Once you have installed an Asta Powerproject client, you can use it for a trial period without activating it. You must activate the Asta Powerproject client by the end of this period in order to continue using it once the trial period is over. You can activate the Asta Powerproject client at any time during this period. Until you activate the Asta

Powerproject client, an activation reminder appears each time you start the software. Depending on your installation of Asta Powerproject Enterprise, you may have either of the two following types of licence:

• A named user licence.

• A concurrent licence, which is located on a licence server.

If you have an Internet connection, you can activate Asta Powerproject automatically over the Internet. If you do not have an Internet connection, you can activate Asta Powerproject manually with the aid of Asta’s Technical Support department. Activating Asta

Powerproject over the Internet is quicker and easier than activating it via the Technical Support department.

If you activate the Windows firewall on a computer on which an Asta Powerproject client is installed, you must define astalicenceserver.exe and Port 135 as exceptions in the firewall before attempting to activate Asta Powerproject. See section 3.6, Configuring firewalls to work with the Asta licence server, for more details.

If you install Asta Powerproject onto a virtual machine and activate the software, you are warned that the activation cannot be undone. This means that you will be unable to subsequently install and activate Asta Powerproject on a different computer.

4.3.1 Activating Asta Powerproject using a named user licence

To activate an Asta Powerproject client using a named user licence:

1. Ensure that you have an active Internet connection on the computer on which you have installed the Asta Powerproject client.

2. On the computer on which you have installed the Asta Powerproject client, launch Asta Powerproject. A message appears informing you that you can use Asta Powerproject for a trial period and that you must activate it at some point during the trial period.

4. Enter details into the fields on the dialog – you must complete all of the fields and you must enter a valid email address in the E-mail address field – then click OK. Asta Powerproject attempts to activate itself automatically over the Internet. If your serial number is associated with a named user licence, a dialog appears to inform you that the activation was successful when the activation is complete. You can now continue to use Asta Powerproject.

5. If your serial number is associated with a concurrent licence – one that is contained within an Asta licence server – the Locate Licence Server dialog appears. Enter the name of the computer on which the licence server is located and click OK.

Asta Powerproject attempts to contact the licence server on the specified computer and, if a successful connection is made, a dialog appears to inform you that Asta Powerproject is now configured to obtain its licence from the specified licence server. You can now continue to use Asta Powerproject.

In some cases, automatic activation may not be successful. Automatic activation will not work in the following circumstances:

• If you do not have a connection to the Internet, or if your connection to the Internet is not currently active.

• If Asta’s automatic activation service is currently unavailable.

• If you have installed and are attempting to activate a single copy of Asta Powerproject on more than one computer.

• If you are reinstalling Asta Powerproject on a computer whose hardware has been altered significantly.

If automatic activation fails, a dialog that informs you of the problem will appear and you will either be asked to activate Asta Powerproject manually or to contact Asta’s Technical Support department for assistance.

4.3.2 Activating Asta Powerproject using a concurrent licence

To activate an Asta Powerproject client using a concurrent licence that is located on a licence server:

1. On the computer on which you have installed the Asta Powerproject client, launch Asta Powerproject. A message appears informing you that you can use Asta Powerproject for a trial period and that you must activate it at some point during the trial period.

2. Click either Continue Trial or Activate Later (depending on whether the trial period has ended). The main Asta Powerproject window appears.

3. Click File, then click Activation. The Activation tab of the Backstage view appears. 4. Click Configure. The Asta Product Activation Configuration wizard appears:

5. Click the I know where my licence is located radio button, then click Next. 6. Enter the name or IP address of the computer on which the Asta licence server is

located in the field on the next screen of the wizard, then click Next:

7. Click Finish on the final screen of the wizard. If a licence is available on the Asta licence server on the named computer, you can now continue to use Asta Powerproject.
