How far can one go with remote viewing? Are there limits to what can be targeted?
Initially, back in the mid-1980s, I would have said yes, there are limits to remote viewing. You can go only so far with it. But now I'm not so sure. During the mid- to late 1980s I began getting involved with some targets that would stretch the realm of prob-ability to its limits. These targets were certainly not of my choosing because, as usual, I was being kept totally blind to what they were throughout the targeting and information collection process. I would also add that the example which I am about to present came within the context of four or five other targets, all of which were fairly normal, e.g., the St. Louis Arch, Devil's Tower, Pompeii, and other notable places or locations.
Therefore, I present the example exactly as it occurred and ask that you make up your own mind. I will purposely wait until the end of the chapter to tell you what the target is.
It was the twenty-second of May, 1984, when I entered the lab at the Monroe Institute prepared to do an exercise in remote viewing.
Many of the targets which I had previously done there were inter-esting for the most part but certainly not unusual. That particular morning was no different from the previous two or three.
I was met by Robert Monroe and the interviewer and prepared for the remote viewing session. They connected the Bio-monitoring devices to my body and escorted me to the remote viewing room, where I made myself comfortable by lying down on the bed on my back and arranging the wires so that they wouldn't interfere with my becoming relaxed. They extinguished the lights in the room and pulled the heavy sound-proofed door shut behind them, effectively sealing me into a totally black chamber where it was quiet enough to hear a pin drop. I listened to the special Hemi-Sync™ tape which Robert had made for me and drifted off into relaxation. After
approximately ten minutes, when my bio-monitoring equipment established that I was totally relaxed and ready, they gave me the targeting cues. The following represents exactly what occurred that morning in May. The comments and who made them are indicated by the following: RAM = Robert A. Monroe; Int = Interviewer; and Joe = me. The actual target was in a double-wrapped and opaque envelope, in Robert Monroe's shirt pocket. I was told where it was but was not allowed to handle it.
RAM: RJ 522...time, 10:09 A.M.
Int: Plus ten minutes and ready to start. [Note made on the tape but not heard by me in the remote viewing room.]
Target Number One
Int: All right now, using the information in the en-velope...exclusively focusing your attention now...using the information in the envelope...focus on forty point eight nine degrees north, nine point five five degrees west.
Joe: I want to say that it looks like a...what it looks like is a great view of a pyramid like...a pyramid form...it's very high...it's like sitting in a large depressed area.
Int: All right.
Joe: It's yellowish...ahhhh...okra-colored.
Int: Move in time to the time indicated in the envelope and describe what's happening.
Joe: An impression of severe...severe clouds...more like dust storm...aaah, feels like it's ahhh...seems to be like a h . . . I ' v e got to iron this out, it's real weird.
Int: Just report your raw perceptions at this time.
Joe: I'm looking at the aftereffect of a major geological trauma.
Int: Ok, go back to the time before the major geologic problem.

Joe: H m m m m , total difference. Before t h e r e is n o . . . n o . . . o h hell...it's like mounds of dirt appear and then they disappear when you go before. See a...large flat sur-f a c e s . . . v e r y smooth, angles and walls, really large stuff...megalithic.
Int: All right, at this period in time now, before the geologic activity, look around, in and around this area, and see if you can find any activity.
(Long pause)
Joe: Keep seeing ah...looks like a perception of a shadow of people...very tall. But it's only a shadow...it's as if they were there but they are not...not there anymore.
Int: Go back to a period of time when they are there.
Joe: A h . . . i t ' s like a I get a lot of static on the line and everything...breaking up all the t i m e . . . v e r y fragmen-tary...in pieces.
Int: Just report the raw data, don't try to put things together, just report the raw data.
Joe: I keep seeing a very large people...they appear very thin and tall, but they are very large...ah...wearing some kind of strange clothes, very tight...skin tight...almost can't see them.
Target Number Two
Int: All right, holding in this time period, holding in this time period, I want you to move your physical location in this space to another physical location, but in this time period.
Joe: Uh huh.
Int: Move now to forty-six point four five, forty-six point four five north, three hundred fifty-three point two two east.
Move in this time to forty-six point four five north, three hundred fifty-three point two two east.
Joe: Feel like I'm inside a cavern...no not a cavern, it's
more like a canyon. I'm looking up, up the sides of very steep walls that seem to go on forever. And there's like ah...struc-ture t h e r e . . . i t ' s like the wall of the canyon itself has been carved. Yeah...I'm getting very large structures. No ah...in-tricacies seem to be...just huge sections of smooth stone.
Int: Do these structures have insides and outsides?
Joe: Yes, they are very...it's like a rabbit warren...cor-ridors and rooms, but they are really huge. I feel like I'm standing in one and it's really huge. Perception is that the ceilings are very high and the walls very wide.
Int: Real time, plus twenty-two minutes. [Said and recorded on the tape but not heard by me in the remote viewing room.]
Target Number Three
Int: Yes, that would be correct. I would like to move now to another location nearby. All right, move now from this point in this time to forty-five point eight six north, three fifty-four point one east. Forty-five point eight six north, three fifty-four point one east.
Joe: It appears to be the end of a very large road. And there is a marker standing there...it's very large. Keep getting a Washington monument overlay...it's like an obelisk.
Target Number Four
Int: All right, from this point then, let us move to another point. Move now to thirty-five point two six north, thirty-five point two six north, two hundred thirteen point two four east.
Move in this time to thirty-five point two six north, two hundred thirteen point two four east.
Joe: I feel like I'm in the middle of a huge circular basin.
It's ringed with mountains almost all the way around. Very ragged...ragged mountains. There is a...basin's very very large. Scale seems to be off for some reason...everything seems really big...everything's big.
Int: I understand the problem, please continue.
Joe: I see the right corner angle to something, but that is

all. I don't see anything else.
Target Number Five
Int: Ok, then let's move to a little different place, very close. Move from the point that you are now in this time to thirty-four point six north, two hundred thirteen point zero nine east. Move now in this time to thirty-four point six north, two hundred and thirteen point zero nine east.
Joe: Something very white...very flat and white.
Int: What is your position of observation as you look at this thing that reflects white?
Joe: I'm at an oblique left angle. The sun i s . . . t h e sun is weird.
Target Number Six
Int: All right, look back down at the ground now. We are going to move just a little bit from this place, just a little bit from this place. Thirty-four point five seven north, two hundred twelve point two two east, very close by. Move over now to thirty-four point five seven north, two hundred twelve point two two east.
Joe: A h . . . a h . . . i t ' s like I can just perceive ahhhh....like a radiating pattern of some kind. It is like some real strange or kind of intersecting roads that are dug in the valleys. You know, when a road is just a slightly blurry edge.
Int: Tell me about the shapes of these things.
Joe: They are like real neat channels cut. They are very deep like the road is down.
Int: Ok, I have now...1 notice electrically your null point has come out a little bit. I want you to stay deep and capture what you are focusing on.
Joe: That's really tough...it seems like it's just always very sporadic.
Target Number Seven
Int: Yes, I realize that, but it is very important that you maintain your focus. I have a movement exercise again for you, and this is some considerable distance away. So, holding the focus in time, remember the focus in time, that you had before and moving now to fifteen degrees north, one hundred ninety-eight degrees east. Get deeper and deeper and deeper like you were before. Fifteen degrees north, one hundred ninety-eight degrees east. Take some time, get back deep.
Joe: See a h . . . i n t e r s e c t i n g . . . w h a t e v e r these things are...they are carved deeply...but are like road beds. See pointed tops of things on the horizon. Even the horizon looks funny...it's weird...like ah...different. You can see like very clearly but far away...and the vague.
Target Number Eight
Int: Ok, another movement now to eighty degrees south, eighty degrees south, sixty-four degrees east, sixty-four degrees east. Move now in this time to eighty degrees south, sixty-four degrees east.
Joe: Pyramids again...[Note: This is first actual mention of pyramids, but it is obvious that I must have had the thought in my mind for some time. The expertise of the interviewer is well displayed here, in that he didn't say or use the word pyramids until after I first used it. It is extremely important that the interviewer not lead the remote viewer. In most cases this is why the interviewer is kept as blind to the target as the viewer.]...but can't tell if it's overlay or not because they are different.
Int: Ok, do these pyramids have insides and outsides?
Joe: Yes, and they are very huge. It's really an interesting perception that I am getting.
Int: I think he is losing his ability to move but he is still attracted to things that are interesting [Joe is speaking in the background but cannot be understood] so we are going to go ahead and explore what seems to be interesting him rather than move on the targets indicated. [This is a note inserted on the tape, but which I didn't hear from the remote viewing room.]

Int: Could you please repeat that?
Joe: These are like shelters from storms.
Int: These structures you are seeing?
Joe: Yes. They are designed for that.
Int: All right, go inside one of these and find some activity to tell me about.
Int: Plus thirty-seven minutes, real time, p l u s is a note said on the tape, but not heard by me in the remote viewing room.]
Joe: Different chambers...but they're all stripped of any kind of furnishings or anything...it's like it is a strictly functional place...for sleeping...er...that's not a good word...hiberna-tion. Some form...ah...I get real raw inputs...storms...savage storms...and sleeping through storms.
Int: Tell me about the ones who sleep through the storms.
Joe: Ahhhh...very tall again...very large people. But they are thin. They look thin because of their height...and they dress i n . . . o h hell...looks like a real light silk, but it's not a flowing type of clothing, it looks like it's cut to fit.
Int: Move close to one of them and ask them to tell you about themselves.
(Very long pause)
Joe: An ancient people. But they are ahhhh...they're dying. It's past their time and age.
Int: Tell me about this.
Joe: They are responding in a very philosophic...they are looking for a way to survive...they can't see their way out...they can't seem to find the way out. So they are hanging on while they wait...for something to return...or something to...that's coming with the answer.
Int: What is it they are waiting for?
Joe: They are ahhhh...evidently there was a group or party of them that went to find a new place to live. It's like...I'm getting all kinds of overwhelming input of the corruption of their environment. It's failing very rapidly and that's why that group went somewhere, went a long way to find another place where...
Int: What was the cause of the atmospheric distur-bance...the environment disturbance?
Joe: I see a picture of a...a picture of like a...oh hell...it's almost a warp in the...it's like seeing...
Int: (Interrupting) Give me the raw data.
J o e : . . . a globe...that...it's like a globe that goes through a comet's tail...through a river of something...but it's all very cosmic...1 keep getting like deep space pictures.
Int: All right, before you leave this individual...ask him if there's any way that y o u . . . a s k him if he knows who you a r e . . . i s there any way that you can help him in this present predicament?
Joe: All I get is that they must just wait. It doesn't know who I am. It thinks that it is seeing a hallucination or some-thing.
Int: Ok, when the others left...these people are wait-ing...when the others left, how did they go?
Joe: I get an impression of ahhhhh...1 don't know what the hell it is...it looks like the inside of a large boat, very rounded walls...but shiny metal.
Int: Go along with them on their journey and find out where it is that they go.
(Long pause)
Joe: Impression of a h . . . o f a really crazy place with vol-canoes and gas p o c k e t s . . . a h . . . s t r a n g e p l a n t s . . . a very volatile place. It's very much like going from the frying pan into the fire. Difference is that there appears to be a lot of vegetation, where the other place didn't have any. A different kind of storm.
ANOTHER WORLD • 163 Int: All right, it's time to come back now to the sound of my voice, to the present time, to right now, the twenty-second of May, 1984, the sound of my voice. Move back now to the room, back to the sound of my voice, back further now to the sound of my voice...on the twenty-second of May, 1984. Ok, your voltages have come up n o w . . . l o o k i n g good. Your polarity has reversed back, you've reversed back again.
Joe: I feel like I was a long way off.
Int: This will be an end of session then.
At this point, I moved from the remote viewing room to the experimental area of the lab and, while sitting with the others, I presented some views on what I had just experienced and responded to some questions.
Joe: My perception is that I was looking down a very long tunnel, and at the end is a cracked top to a series of filters. Only there aren't any real filters there and I don't know how to explain that. It's like very static-ridden...all blasted to hell and back. That's why I felt like I went a long way off the deep edge.
Int: Have you ever experienced this before?
Joe: I have in a sense, but not this bad. There are some very primal things about it that make the things true. But there are other things here that didn't have the mark of presence that would make them real enough. I feel like I went out there somewhere and touched the akashic records instead of the reality records...only that's not a good phrase.
Int: We've often talked about, in all states of time there is no distance difference, and that's a nice philosophical point to talk about. If I understand what you said, aside from that philosophical point you're telling me that you had to go a long ways to get this information?
Joe: Let me put it this way. And again this is a totally inappropriate way to say it, because we also refer to realities as different too...this is like a reality one step removed from a reality. That doesn't mean it is a different reality...but that it is one step removed for some reason. And a h . . .
Int: Are the people that you talked to a part of this reality then?
(A very long pause) Joe: Gosh, I hope not.
(Lots of laughter)
Joe: These guys are really huge. Let me rephrase that, I think they are, but not now, that's why I think this is someplace in the future. These are really gargantuan people.
Int: Are they human?
Joe: Yes, they are very humanoid in form, but there are some basic differences. They looked very frail, but they weren't. They have this huge bone structure and everything, but they...and their musculature is ok for what they needed to do, but in appearance wise they don't look as strong as your usual stocky short...
Int: So, they were different in some ways?
Joe: Yes, they were different in a lot of ways. Philosophi-cally...and there was some difference in their thinking...
Int: And this concept that you have that you went some-where into the future, that these people exist somesome-where in the future, how does that parallel with what you just said about this difficult concept that...
Joe: OK, if we mutated six times over the next 10,000 years, it's kind of like I was seeing the mutated effect, the mutated results.
Int: It's still part of this reality...
Joe: Yes, but it is still one reality removed, as we under-stand it. What I'm saying i s . . . d a m n i t . . . I can't apply our reality to it. It's different...it's...
Int: (Interrupting) Oh, I see, in an objective universe that you are thinking a b o u t . . . a s opposed to a different energy system. It's the same energy system...
Joe: Yes, but it seems to be coming through a filter. And, I'm not sure if they are mutated, it's just that they are different.
