Day 5. Reading

Now read the myth to help you complete today’s challenge.

Heracles was a tough little baby. Everyone loved him but Hera, Zeus’ wife, who sent two snakes to kill him.

“No trouble!” thought Heracles as he strangled both of them.

For a while Hera ignored Heracles. As he grew up, Heracles became stronger and stronger and stronger. He Married and had many

children.

Hera hated him being so happy. “This happiness has gone on long enough!” she said out loud. So, one night she put a spell on him. He lashed out with his sword, killing imaginary enemies. But when he woke, he saw he had killed his own children.

Heart-broken, Heracles went to the temple to seek forgiveness. “Will the gods ever forgive me?” Heracles asked the priestess. “Only if you do twelve tasks for your enemy, King Eurystheus.” she replied.

The King was frightened of Heracles, so he hid in a pot whenever he came near. So, Heracles had to shout to the King. “I’ll do twelve things and no more!”

And because he hated Heracles, he gave him twelve deadly tasks . First, Heracles had to kill a huge lion whose hide was so thick that no sword could penetrate it. Heracles found the lion, but his arrows did not kill it, the lion bent Heracles sword so Heracles had to

change his plan. Heracles hit the huge lion on the ears which then allowed him to use his strength to kill the lion. Heracles had the lion’s hide made into a cloak which he took back to the King. The King was too busy hiding in a large pot to want the cloak so Heracles kept the cloak, and set off on his second deadly task.

Next, he had to kill the many headed Hydra, whose very breath could kill man or beast. So, holding his breath, Heracles used fire to kill off the heads one by one, until the Hydra was dead.

Thirdly, he had to capture the sacred, golden-horned deer, an animal as quick as the wind. Heracles found the sacred, golden-horned deer, but as soon as it saw Heracles it ran away. Heracles ran after it until the deer stopped to have a drink of water, then Heracles arrowed the sacred, golden-horned deer to the ground so it could not run away, and they became friends.

The fourth task was to catch a savage boar whose tusks could pierce any armour. Heracles decided to scare the boar out of its home, and chased after it until the boar became stuck in the snow. Heracles pulled the boar out of the snow and carried across his

shoulders all the way back to King Eurystheus’s palace. The King was hiding in the largest pot and was surprised to see Heracles again. Next, Heracles had to clean out, in one night, the vast and filthy stables of King Augeas. when Heracles arrived at the stable, he decided it was no job for a pitchfork. So, he collected all the rocks he could find to change the direction of the river so that it now flowed through the filthy stables and washed them clean.

Then he had to destroy a flock of man-eating birds which hid in a dangerous swamp. Heracles shook a large, noisy rattle to scare the birds and then shot them down like flies. He gathered up the birds and took them back to King Eurystheus. The King was most unhappy to see Heracles “AREN’T YOU DEAD YET?” he shouted to Heracles. The seventh task was to capture the fire-breathing, marauding bull of Crete. Heracles was able to tame the bull and take it back to the King.

Next, he had to steal Diomedes’ horses, which were fed on human flesh. Heracles found the horses and after knocking out a guard and fighting Diomedes’ army, he led the horses back to King Eurystheus.

Again, the King was hiding in a pot and shouted at Heracles to take the horses away before they ate him!

Then Heracles had to fetch the golden girdle word by the Queen of the Amazon warrior-woman. The Queen of the Amazon warrior- women was about to give her belt to Heracles, Hera spoke up “Don’t you dare give it to him. "So, the Queen of the Amazon-warrior- women decided they would have to fight Heracles. Finally, Heracles was able to get the golden girdle.

The tenth task was to size the monster Geryon’s cattle, guarded by his two-headed dog. When Heracles saw the two-headed dog he

showed him a tasty bone to eat and then hit the dog very hard on its heads, which knocked the dog out! Then he killed the guards and was able to take the cattle back to King Eurystheus.

The eleventh, to collect three golden apples protected by a ferocious dragon. Heracles killed the dragon with an arrow and

collected the apples and took them back to King Eurystheus who was again hiding in a pot. Heracles said “I've been working for you for ten years, and I'm fed up!” to which the King replied “So am I, but there is one task left.”

Heracles’ twelfth and last task was the most dangerous of all: to fetch the three-headed guard dog, Cerberus, from Hell itself. So, Heracles set off. When he reached the ferry into the underworld the ferryman refused to take Heracles as he only took ghosts) until Heracles threatened him with his club. Heracles entered Hell and set about finding the three-headed dog. When he found the dog, Heracles told the dog that he would take him on a nice holiday and that after visiting King Eurystheus, he would return the dog back to Hell.

His twelve tasks completed; Heracles returned to King

Eurystheus. The King was dismayed to see him alive, and quickly sent him packing. “Get out and don’t you ever come back!” shouted the King from inside the pot he was hiding in. Then, to avoid angering the Gods, Heracles sent Cerberus back to Hades.

At the temple, Heracles was finally pardoned. “You seem to have done quite well, Heracles.” said the Priestess.

“Quite well? I’ve done marvels!” Heracles replied. He was content and stronger than ever! And Hera never bothered Heracles again. Challenge!

Can you complete a picture storyboard for your favourite task Heracles had to complete? You may want to use speech bubbles or thought bubbles to show what is happening.
