The direct attachment of the tie rod by brazing or welding to a vertical leg of the joint is allowed for joints T-15, T-20, T-22 and T-23.
The attachment of a tie rod to an angle that reinforces a joint is allowed for joints T-4, T-8, T-9, T-15, T-16, T-19 and T-21. The angle shall meet the requirements for tie-rodded intermediate reinforcement.
The attachment of two tie rods or tie straps to the duct wall by welding or bolting within 1 inch (25 mm) of both sides of joints T-15, T-20, T-21 and T-23 is allowed.
Additional General Requirements
Ties shall be attached in such a manner that they will not loosen or detach with normal operating pressure fluctuations in the duct. When ties are to be welded to the duct wall the rod or strap shall have a 90 degree bend with5/8-inch (16 mm) minimum extension beyond the bend. The extension of the rod shall be welded to the duct. The strap shall be welded to duct at the 90-degree bend.
Holes made in the duct wall for tie rod passage shall be the minimum size.
Tie rods shall be galvanized steel of1/4-inch (6.4 mm) minimum diameter if 36-inch (914 mm) length or less and3/8-inch minimum (9.5 mm) diameter for greater length.
Tie straps shall be 1-inch by1/8-inch (25 mm by 3.2 mm) galvanized steel minimum and a smallest edge shall face the airflow direction.
Ties shall be spaced at even intervals of duct width not exceeding 60 inches (1524 mm).
The use of ties does not void the need to attach reinforcements to the duct wall; however, when ties occur outside of the duct as on two-side reinforcements at 4-inch w.g. (995 Pa) and over, the attachment within 2 inches (51 mm) of the corner is not required.
When ties occur in two directions in the same vicinity, they shall either be prevented from contacting or shall be in permanent contact.
Ties may be used as components of the suspension system for ducts over 96-inch (2438 mm) width, provided that the hanger load is directly transmitted to a trapeze or duct reinforcement member beneath the duct.
The construction of ducts of widths greater than 96 inches (2438 mm) requires use of tie rods on Grade H joints and intermediates (2 inches by 2 inches by1/8
inch) (51 mm by 51 mm by 3.2 mm) at intervals not exceeding 60 inches (1524 mm) in the transverse direction. For 10 inches w.g. (2488 Pa), 16 gage (1.47 mm) duct with 2 feet (610 mm) reinforcement spacing is required; 18 gage (1.19 mm) duct is required at lower pressures with spacings of 2 feet (610 mm) at 6 inches w.g. (1493 Pa); 21/2feet (762 mm) at 1 inch to 4 inches w.g. (249 Pa to 995 Pa) and 5 feet (1524 mm) at1/2inch w.g. (124 Pa).

SECTION 6.201 — SCOPE
This is a test method for determining values of flame distance and smoke density for exposed electrical cables, optical fiber race-ways and plastic sprinkler pipe that are to be installed in concealed spaces above suspended ceilings used as air plenums without the cables being enclosed in raceways in those spaces. The purpose of this test method is to determine whether the flame-propagation and smoke-generating characteristics of these cables without raceways, optical fiber raceways and the plastic sprinkler pipe are in accordance with the provisions of Exception 5 or 6 to Section 601.4 of this code.APPENDIX A, STANDARD 6-2
