5.3 Concerning the commutator in varieties with a weak-difference term

In analogy to Theorem 4.42 and Theorem 4.41 in Chapter 4, it would be interesting to know whether the following hold.

Problem 5.17. Let V be a variety with a weak-difference term. Suppose that for

any algebra A∈ V and any α, β, θ ∈ConA such that βα, we have that

[αθ, βθ]≤[α, β]∨θ.

Does it then follow thatV has a difference term?

Problem 5.18. Let V be a variety with a weak-difference term. Suppose that for

any algebra A∈ V and any α, β, θ ∈ConA such that βα, we have that

[(αθ)/θ,(βθ)] = [αθ, βθ]/θ.
