Ha sido uno de los campos temáticos más representativos de la producción intelectual de Simon. Unas veces se mueve en un ámbito lo suficientemente amplio para abarcar el plano de las Ciencias Sociales en su conjunto (con incidencia, por tanto, en Sociología, Ciencia Política, …), mientras que otras veces –la mayoría– se mueve en la esfera de la Administración de Empresas, donde adquiere dos denominaciones: Organización Empresarial u Organización Industrial. Cabe entender que esta última acepción señala un subconjunto de la anterior y que guarda una relación más directa con las enseñanzas que promovió en el Carnegie Institute of Technology, que después se convirtió en Carnegie-
Mellon University. A su vez, la Teoría de la Organización Empresarial guarda estrecha relación con las Teorías de la Empresa.
