Configuring program settings

Most program configuration settings and profile default settings are located in the wtm_wtx.ini file. Use this section as a reference for the settings contained in this file.

audit

The Reporting Server maintains audit files for each profile and for the program.

Table 11 - 5 Audit settings

Audit settings

archives

Archiving allows you to backup profile databases and reports at regular intervals. The archives section defines how often archiving takes place and the maximum number of archives kept for each profile.

Table 11 - 6 Archive settings

cookie

If your web server uses cookies to identify repeat visitors, this information can be used to more accurately identify unique user sessions. Using cookies is the most accurate way of tracking the user’s path through the site.

Note: See “Cookies” on page 107 for details on how cookies are defined in the GUI.

Audit settings Default

logdir ./wtm_wtx/datfiles/statuslog

Specifies the directory where the profile status logs and the audit file for the Reporting Server are stored.

logfile wtrs.audit

Specifies the name of the Reporting Server audit file. This file provides an account of program activity.

Specifies how often an archive is created for the profile.

maxarchives 11

Specifies the maximum number of archives kept for each profile using archiving.

Table 11 - 7 Cookie settings

Cookie setting Default

enable 1

1--Uses cookie data in the analysis.

0--Cookies are not used to track visitors.

validate 1

1--Includes only valid cookies in the analysis.

0--Does not validate the cookie. If enabled is set to 1, the data in the cookie field of the log file is used in the analysis. If enabled is set to 0, this value is not read.

CookieText

Allows you to specify a cookie to use to track user sessions.

1--Uses the cookie specified in the CookieString option.

0--Uses the cookie generated by the WebTrends Plugin (or none, if enable is set to 0.)

Note: You must also specify the cookie to match in the cookiestring option.

WebTrendsPlugin

Allows you to use the cookie generated by either WebTrends Netscape Extended Log Plugin or WebTrends IIS Extended Log Plugin.

1--If CookieText is set to 0, set this option to 1.

0--If CookieText is set to 1, set this option to 0.

Note: You must have installed one of these plugins to use this option.

CookieString

If the CookieText option is set to 1, specify the cookie format to validate here. Enter the string to match.

For example, the cookie field of a log file might look like this:

CookieID1=CookieValue1;CookieID2=CookieValue2;

CookieID3=CookieValue3

If the cookie that you want to use to identify user sessions is CookieID2, you would enter CookieID2 in the CookieString field.

If you are using Microsoft SiteServer, you might have cookies that look like this:

SITESERVER=ID=CookieValue1;SITESERVER=GUID=CookieValue 2

If the GUID is the cookie that you want to use to identify user sessions, then you should enter SITESERVER=GUID in the CookieString field.

Cookie settings

defaults

The settings in this section define the defaults for new profiles created through the GUI (graphical user interface).

Table 11 - 8 Defaults settings [cookie]

maxtopcount 500

This option is not currently used.

maxthreads 64

default setting Default

Specifies the number of threads which are allocated to reverse DNS (domain name server) lookups. The threads are divided among the number of concurrent analyses.

maxcachedcount NA

This option is not currently used.

dnscachelifespan 30

Specifies the number of days that DNS entries stored in the database are valid.

dnsthreads (Solaris 2.5) 8

(Solaris 2.6) 16 (Linux) 1

Specifies the number of threads available to perform DNS lookups on the entries in the lookup queue. The more threads working on DNS resolution, the quicker the process should go, provided that there are enough entries in the lookup queue to work on. However, if there are too many threads for the size of the lookup queue, many of the threads are not used, and remain idle. Making this number too high may overtax system resources.

dnscacheentries 5000

Specifies the number of entries in the DNS cache. Once an entry in the DNS lookup queue has been cached, it is saved here until the maximum number of entries is reached. If you are running extremely large log files, or log files with a high incidence of unique IPs, you should increase the size of the cache for better performance on subsequent analyses. Each entry takes about 50 bytes; making the cache too large may cause excessive swapping.

dnstimeout 5

Specifies the maximum number of seconds given to perform each DNS lookup. Once this number is reached, the IP is cached whether it is translated or not, and the record is ready for processing. Decreasing this value can improve performance significantly if there are a large number of IPs that cannot be translated. However, once an IP has been cached, it is not be looked up again which can affect the accuracy of reports.

downloadtypes {exe,0} {com,0} {zip,0} {pdf,0}

{arc,0} {bin,0} {sit,0} {tar,0} {gz,0}

{z,0} {arj,0}

default setting Default

Specifies the file type extensions that are associated with downloaded files and when the file type is included in reports.

0--includes the file type if it is from a script or dynamic page.

1--includes the file type only if it is not from a script or dynamic page.

2--always includes the file type.

This data is included in the Top Downloaded Files table and graph.

documenttypes {htm,0} {txt,0} {mdl,0} {shtml,0}

{htmls,0} {html,0} {htp,0} {htpl,0}

{dbm,0} {asp,0} {sht,0} {cfm,0}

Specifies the file type extensions that are counted as document files and when the file type is included in reports.

0--includes the file type if it is from a script or dynamic page.

1--includes the file type only if it is not from a script or dynamic page.

2--always includes the file type.

These are reported in the Most/Least Requested Pages table and graph, and the Top Entry/Exit Pages table and graph.

cachedtime 1800

Specifies the number of minutes of inactivity before the user session is timed-out. The default value, 1800, corresponds to 30 minutes of inactivity.

titlecachesize 1000

If the NoHTMLTitles option is disabled (set to0), specify the size of the cache for page titles here. The default value is 1000.

titlecachelifespan 259200

If the NoHTMLTitles option is disabled (set to1), specify the maximum number of seconds entries are saved in the cache.

This option is typically used for sites that change often. The default value is 259200 (3 days).

nohtmltitles 0

Setting this value to 1 leaves HTML page titles out of reports.

Tip: Setting this option to 1 may significantly reduce the time it takes to analyze the log file.

reports

The settings in the reports section define the number of reports that are saved for each interval by default. Once this limit is reached, the oldest report is deleted to make room for the new one.

When determining how many reports to store, consider how much disk space you want to devote to reports and how long you want to save them. A report using the Complete Summary template as it was installed needs 350-400 K.

These settings correspond to the dailyreport, weeklyreport, monthlyreport, quarterlyreport, and yearlyreport settings in the [profile] section of the wtm_wtx.ini file.

As an administrator, you can modify these setting on a profile basis.

Non-administrators can modify these settings if the histoverride option in the profiles section is set to 1.

Note: If an option is not present, if it has a value of 0, or if it is blank, reports are not deleted.

Table 11 - 9 Reportssettings

performance

If you are analyzing a large number of log files, these settings help you manage the performance of the Reporting Server.

Reports settings Default

dailystore 0

Specifies the default number of daily reports to save.

weeklystore 0

Specifies the default number of weekly reports to save.

monthlystore 0

Specifies the default number of monthly reports to save.

quarterlystore 0

Specifies the default number of quarterly reports to save.

yearlystore 0

Specifies the default number of yearly reports to save.

Note: You can also modify these settings through the GUI. See

“System performance” on page 118 for details.

Table 11 - 10 Performance settings

Performance settings

language

The language section defines the language that reports should be generated in.

Performance settings Default threadedanalysis true

This option specifies whether multiple processes are performed at the same time. Set this option to false if your system lacks the resources, or if you want the processing of profiles handled one at a time.

false--Performs profile analyses one at a time.

true--Analyzes more than one profile at once. If your system has fast processing or multiple CPUs, enabling threaded analysis may improve performance.

maxanalysis 1

Enter the maximum number of profiles that can be processed concurrently.

If your system has fast processing or multiple CPUs, increasing this number may improve performance.

lookupqueuesize 5000

Specifies the maximum number of records in the lookup queue. Records enter the lookup queue and wait to be processed by one of the lookup threads. The lookup queue should be large enough to make use of the available lookup threads, but not so large that it uses too much memory.

Each queue entry uses 2K of memory; if the lookup queue is too large, excessive swapping occurs.
