LESSON 16 CONTROL OF THE FUTURE
PREREQUISITES FOR this lesson are all the preceding lessons and some ability in all of them: ability to see and perceive the future to some extent, the ability to handle emotion, to handle intention and to change intention, to understand thought, emotion, and effort, and how to apply them.
Everybody controls his own future to some extent. Everybody foresees the future to some extent. You know that you are going to eat, and you set in motion the preliminary steps toward that future. You know that you are going to have various ordinary things happen to you, that the sun is going to rise tomorrow and a lot of other stuff like that.
Perhaps 95 percent of your future is more or less routine, and for this reason you have come to ignore it.
What most people are actually looking for in control of the future is the means of avoiding the high spots of unpleasant emotion - the "times when I lost", and of setting up the "times when I was successful':
The question then is not whether you can see and control any of the future, but how much of it do you see and control. How much of it are you apparently effect rather than the controlling cause?
On the highest level of awareness, the individual continuously and in detail creates his future as he creates his environment, and the control of it as he creates it is not very difficult. But there is a balance. In order to cause something, you must agree to be the effect of it also. If you want to control a group of people, you have to agree to be the effect of that group; that is, you must be willing to do whatever is necessary in order to cause that group of people to do what you want them to do. It isn't a simple matter of saying, "I'd like to see the world at peace," without being ready to do something about peace. Of course, if you want to be cause for as large a group of people as the world, you have to be a large amount of effect also. You have to be crucified or its equivalent - perhaps murdered on some Indian street, as Gandhi was. On smaller things you don't need to be quite so much effect, naturally. You can control them with somewhat less trouble. But you must still be ready to make things balance.
By now, if you have done the lessons and learned them well, you should be able to see fair-sized blocks of the future. Normally you can see it in a straight-line event scan which has a lot of holes in it - that is, you can see the major high points from day to day. If you have been doing the dream technique, you should pick up the emotionally colored events from your dreams.
Your perception of the future will vary directly according, first, to how much you are willing to see and perceive in the way of emotion, routine, and the actual structure of life, the routine growing things; and, second, to how much of it you are trying to control, because the more desire you have about the future, the more effort you are making to control it, the less of it you will be able to see. You will not see those things which would interfere with the things you are trying to control. So you will have to strike a balance. I am told by a number of persons that about 50 percent is the proper balance; You should see about 50 percent of the future in pretty good detail, and the other 50 percent should be more or less random, or random-seeming, which means that actually you are trying to control or prevent about 10 or 15 percent of what you do not see.
It is possible to operate on a completely random, completely seen future. In this case you are totally the effect of the environment. You will eat this way, but the how and the wherewithal will rather surprise you. This law of
possibilities is stated in the Bible in one of the parables of Jesus when he says, "Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin, yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as one of these." It is also stated elsewhere when he tells his disciples to go forth to teach taking only a robe and no other supplies. It is perfectly possible to live an absolutely random, uncontrolled future as well. But you will have to find out where you are before you start walking. If you climb out of a boat and start walking across the water, you are apt to get wet unless you have the data on levitation.
But we are considering control of the future and how this is achieved. The future in terms of a given individual is controlled exactly and in detail by his intentions about it, if he is cause; or, if he is not cause, by the things he has agreed to be the effect of, which he has agreed are cause for him. Between these two, it is always possible to determine a man's future in great detail. By this same principle it is possible to set up anybody on an
electropsychometer, whether he claims to know the future or not, and determine what his intentions are, what he plans to do in the future, if anything, who or what he is the effect of, and what he is trying to cause. It is even easier to determine his future simply by asking him to imagine a number of things and noting his reactions to them. The ones he imagines the easiest are in most cases the ones he would like to see happen.
To control your future, you learn to control your intentions about it. Once the intentions are set, the future is established. Intention and desire - in this case - are practically the same thing. A real strong desire for something is in effect, as far as God is concerned, a prayer, and is communicated to the group mind, the race mind, God, or whatever action it is that is in charge of answering prayer, and will be recorded and acted upon. The universe is so set up that you must get exactly what you want: the factor which is not determined is when you will get it, how long you will have to wait, because time is the arbitrary - the element which changes. With this one variable, your future will be based exactly and entirely on your desires and your intentions at some time or other - past, present, or future.
If you have agreed that someone else is cause for you - for instance that some woman controls you completely, or you must keep your mother happy - then your future will be determined by their intentions and desires.
But most of you, by the time you have come this far, should be determining your own future by your own intentions, and you should by now have some inkling as to how you set it up. You should be able to catch yourself thinking, "It would be real nice if this would happen." and afterward see how such things happen as desired. The remainder of the job of learning to control the future is learning to set up these little desires properly.
One reason for the Yogis' strong emphasis on absolute neutrality of thought, absolute balance, being able to sit completely still, is that in this way the individual can shut down his "desirer," that part of him which causes and controls his future. Having shut it down, he is then in a position as he sets it back up again to examine the future he is causing for himself, to see what his intention and desires are.
In each of us there are certain cycles already in motion, as we have previously discussed. Now you are the effect of past desires, and some of them are still in motion, and some of them will be unchangeable. Some of them are in motion and unchangeable because you are a human being born into a human society; some, because you are a man or woman and have sex; some, because you are growing, because you are a growing, evolving individual with a certain relationship to an already established environment. But these are essentially minor, and only a few of the details of your future. Most of your future in great detail can be altered radically from this moment forth, if you are so minded. Practically everything but your sex and your age can be pulled up, taken apart and set down in a new spot, if you want.
There are certain times when your future is easier to affect than at others. There are change points, at which the future fans out from a particular decision or set of decisions, one each of which has its own complete, detailed, total future wrapped up with it so that when you come to this point, you can see the future as a more or less integrated or concrete whole. These are the points at which you can alter your future drastically by changing the intentions that hold it in place.
You must learn to make sure, when you plan something, when you set up the desire, that you examine the full meaning of that desire. If you set up, for example, a desire for a supply of walnuts, you must be willing to plant the tree, to take care of the tree and prune it and water it properly, and so on. If you set up the desire to have children, you must be fully willing to care for those children, to feed them and send them to school and wash their dirty faces and clean the mud off their feet and all the rest of the complications that go with raising children.
This is where most people get off the track in controlling the future. It is not how they ask, nor the fact that they set up the desire; it is usually in their failing to calculate the full effect of what they are asking for.
While you have been able to get by with this kind of vague irresponsibility to some extent before you had training, you will find that, now you are trained, you cannot make a casual, hearted prayer. Anything you do in a half-baked way will give you an absolutely half-half-baked result. The untrained individual may be able to pray for rain without considering all the aspects of it, and have a nice gentle shower for a result; but this will not work for you.
You might end up with a tornado and a flood.
You can control anything over which you are willing to take authority. If someone comes to you for help, you say to yourself, "I take authority over this person." and you say it to God, or the telepathic levels, or whatever you want to call them. But once you have claimed the authority, you cannot blame the results on somebody else. You must be willing to accept whatever happens.
If someone comes to you and says that such-and-such a group got together and prayed and prevented a war, he is talking through his hat - unless that group was equally willing to cause a war at some time or other. The same is true of deaths or accidents. Every use of force applied in the universe must balance. God likes nice, neat, balanced equations in the psychic realm as well as anywhere else.
There is only one force which can be applied in large quantities without causing an equally large imbalance which much somehow be compensated; and that is the force of love. But love does not control the future. Love permits it, love admires it, love lets it happen. The minute you try to cause or alter some particular event, you are no longer using in its fullest that force which is called love, because love is a force that does not bend or alter events, but brings them to flower in their own natural way. If a person would naturally be willing to do this or that, when love is applied it will become possible for him to achieve with the stimulus of love, even though he might have thought it beyond him without this help. But if what the individual would naturally do is to slug his brother, upon application of the force of love, he is quite likely to go ahead and slug his brother anyway.
Ordinarily it is not good to control your future. If you try to maintain complete control over it, you will have almost no perception on it except for things which you are trying to cause to happen; and if you have an emotional block, you will get thoroughly surprised sooner or later.
LESSON 17 - EMOTIONAL TONE SCALE
EIGHTY percent or more of psychic perception is blocked behind the barriers which lie at either end of ordinary life as most of us are aware of - the barrier of conception and birth (which I will here refer to as one, although they are not the same), and the barrier of death. As nearly as I can tell from what data I have and from my own experience, the soul is immortal, but for most persons a memory block of pain and fear blocks perception beyond both conception and death.
This block or barrier can be lifted in a number of ways. Lifting it will open up perception and make available that which is called racial memory and that which is called Akashic records. These two things exist within every individual; the fact has been adequately demonstrated and can be demonstrated repeatedly. Some have used them to support a thesis of reincarnation, which I personally doubt. But I know that these records exist.
The racial memory involves a complete record of how and why the body evolved. I do not know whether this is a real record, or whether it is only imaginary, but when the barriers are broken you will experience these things which have been called "past lives".
Ordinarily, breaking this block will open up perception to a high degree. This is why I gave the games and lighter techniques first - so that my students would be able to tolerate what they found when this happened. With some of the beingness and identification broken up and some perception already opened, you should be better prepared for full awareness. In many cases when we opened up perception by using this technique, the individual couldn't tolerate what he saw, and he shut it down. When properly done on a totally unsuspecting individual, it can develop wide-open perception on all levels; I have seen this demonstrated.
However, to open up perception all at once like this is like turning a child loose in a boiler factory and expecting him to operate the factory. He can't take it. So you have been given preparatory games first.
The barriers can be lifted in several ways. The Yogi approach to it is the suspension of breathing, and Spiritualists have various other techniques. We are going to use the emotional tone scale.
The prerequisite for this lesson is the ability to express within yourself, within your body, any emotion which may be suggested to you or which you may decide is appropriate - to be able to express it of your own choice, and to turn it on and turn it off.
This is the first of the heavy techniques. It is not an easy or a simple one. It should not be gone into lightly or without some preparation. A good time for it should be chosen: Friday night, for instance, if the subject does not have to work Saturday and Sunday. Both the subject and the director should be free to spend two or three hours on the session, and the subject should be prepared to spend a couple of days somewhat scattered out, disconnected from the universe and a bit disoriented. It is quite possible that what he experiences will be for a couple of days more real to him than the world he walks in, and some consideration should be allowed for this.
Someone should be around him during this time; someone who can keep an eye on him and keep him from getting lost in the physical universe. The subject should be well fed before the session, and he should be fairly fresh, not too tired.
This should be a team drill only, the director coaching the subject and guiding him so that he is free to devote his entire attention to what he is experiencing within himself.
This method also permits the use of a closed off room, so that no one can walk in on the session while the subject is in a state of wide open sensitivity and pitch something at him which is damaging.
If the technique is properly run, the subject will experience past lives far down the evolutionary trail, back down around the fish, the clam, or even farther than that, depending on how well the technique is driven. If the individual can be thrown really far back and then allowed to soak in what turns up, to explore it, examine the sensations, the feelings, the thoughts, in thorough detail until it is very sharp - as clear or clearer than the room in which he moves -
for two or three days afterward these impressions will keep getting sharper and sharper. They may be three or four times as real as the physical universe in which he is living, and he will be somewhat disoriented. This is why it should be done if possible on a Friday night - so that he has time to get back into good communication with the real universe before he must return to workday function.
