3-12.5 COORDINATION, PERFORMANCE AND SCHEDULING-

Perform actual planting only when weather and soil conditions are suitable in accordance with locally accepted practice.

3-12.6 MATERIALS-

See plans for organic, soil amendments and fertilizer to be used for bid price basis. Specific amendments and fertilizer specification will be made after rough grading operations are complete and soil samples are tested by Subcontractor.

All materials shall be of standard, approved and first-grade quality and shall be in prime condition when installed and accepted. Any commercially processed or packaged material shall be delivered to the site in the original unopened container bearing the manufacturer's guaranteed analysis.

Organic Amendment:

Nitrogen fortified compost derived from 100% recycled bio solid materials:

(a)Nitrogen Stabilized: 0.56 to 0.84% N based on dry weight for wood residual.

(b)Particle Size:

(c)95% - 100% passing 6.35 mm standard sieve. (d)80% - 100% passing 2.33 mm standard sieve.

(e)Salinity: The saturation extract conductivity shall not exceed 3.5 millimhos/cm at 25 deg. C as determined by saturation extract method. (f)Iron Content: Minimum 0.08% dilute acid soluble Fe on dry weight

basis.

(g)Ash: 0-6.0% (dry weight)

Soil Amendment:

Soil sulfur: Agricultural grade sulfur containing a minimum of 99% sulfur (expressed as elemental).

Iron sulfate: 20% Iron (expressed as metallic iron), derived from ferric and ferrous sulphate, 10% sulfur (expressed as elemental).

Calcium Carbonate: 95% lime as derived from oyster shells.

Gypsum: Agricultural grade product containing 98% minimum calcium sulphate. Amend: Available from Kellogg Supply Company.

Activated Charcoal. “Gro-Safe” as manufactured by ICI United States, Inc. Specialty Chemical Division.

Fertilizer:

Planting fertilizer: Pelleted or granular form shall consist of the following percents by weight and shall be mixed by commercial fertilizer supplier:

6% nitrogen 20% phosphoric acid 20% potash

Planting Tablets:

Humus based slow-released type with potential acidity of not more than 5% by weight containing the following percentages of nutrients by weight:

20% nitrogen

10% phosphoric acid 5% potash

2.6% combined calcium 1.6% combined sulfur

0.35% iron (elemental) from ferrous sulfate

7 gram tablets as manufactured by Gro-Power or approved equal, applied per manufacturer's instructions.

Plant Material:

Plants shall be in accordance with the California State Department of Agriculture's regulation for nursery inspections, rules and rating and ANSI Z60.1. All plants shall have a normal habit of growth and shall be sound, healthy, vigorous and free of insect infestations, plant diseases, sun-scalds, fresh abrasions of the bark, excessive abrasions, or other objectionable disfigurements. The Owner shall be the sole judge as to acceptability.

Container stock shall be grown for at least 8-months in containers in which delivered and shall not be root bound or have girdling roots.

The size of the plants will correspond with that normally expected for species and variety of commercially available nursery stock or as specified on drawings. Plants not conforming to the requirements herein specified, shall be considered defective and such plants, whether in place or not, shall be marked as rejected and immediately removed from the site of the work and replaced with new plants at the Subcontractor's expense.

Under no conditions will there be any substitutions of plants or sizes listed on the accompanying plans, except with the express consent of the Owner.

All trees 48 in. box size and below shall be container grown. At no time shall trees or plant materials be pruned, trimmed or topped prior to delivery and any alternation of their shape shall be conducted only with the approval and as directed by the Owner. Plant material shall be true to botanical and common name and variety as specified in "Annotated Checklist of Woody Ornamental Plants in California, Oregon and Washington", published by the University Of California School Of Agriculture (1979). Substitute plant material will not be permitted unless specifically approved in writing by the Owner.

Tree Paint:

Morrison Tree Seal, Cabot Tree paint, or approved equal. Water:

Furnished by Owner; transport as required. Top Dressing/Mulch:

Shredded bark as produced by Artesia Sawdust Products (909) 947-5983, Kellogg Supply Company (310) 830-2200 or approved equal. Place mulch on to soil to a depth of 2 in. min. Submit samples to the Owner for approval prior to purchase.

MULCH MUST BE PARTIALLY DECOMPOSED PRIOR TO APPLICATION. FRESHLY SHREDDED BARK MULCH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTABLE.

Root Control Barrier:

High impact polystyrene (.060 in.) UB 24-2 and UB 48-2. The number of barrier panels required per tree shall be in accordance with the manufacturers specifications for the specified diameters, or as noted on the Drawings. Root Control Barrier by Deep Root Corp., or approved equal.

Drainage Material:

(crushed lava rock): 3/8 in. crushed lava rock, 95-100% passing through a 3/8 in. screen. 0-5% passing through a 3/8 in, mesh. 80-100%/cu. yd.

Soil Separator:

Woven polypropylene fabric 5.3 oz./sq. yd. Fabric thickness, 50 mils.

Available through Pacific Corrugated Pipe Company, Fontana or approved equal. Staking Materials:

Lodge pole pine tree stakes, 2 inch diameter x 10'-6" long. Made from the entire bole of the tree with bark removed. Completely treat in a solution of copper naphthanate.

Ties: “Wonder Tree Ties” Install per manufacturer’s specifications. Wonder tree ties, 780 s. Van Buren Street, Suite G, Placentia, CA 92870 1 (800) 910-2810.

Guying Hardware:

“Duck Bill" anchoring system as manufactured by Foresight Products LLC, Commerce City, CO 80022, (303) 286-8955 or approved equal.

For trees up to 3" (75 mm) diameter use: Model 40 Duckbill Anchors with 12 feet (3.6 m) of cable attached to each anchor, 3 tree collars, and 3-1/16" (1.6 mm) cable clamps - all pre-assembled. Each anchor holds 300# (135 kg).

For trees up to 6" (150 mm) diameter use: Model 68 Duckbill Anchors with 13 feet (4.0 m) of cable attached to each anchor with a turnbuckle in line, 3 tree collars, and 6-1/8" (3.2 mm) cable clamps - all pre-assembled. Each anchor holds 1,100# (500 kg).

For trees up to 11" (280 mm) diameter use: Model 88 Duckbill Anchors with 15 feet (4.5 m) of cable attached to each anchor with a turnbuckle in line, 3 tree collars, and 6-3/16" (4.8 mm) cable clamps - all pre-assembled. Each anchor holds 3,000# (1,360 kg)

3-12.7 EXAMINATION-

Examine areas to receive landscaping for compliance with requirements and for conditions affecting performance of work of this Section. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

Obtain certification that final grades to +0.10 ft have been established prior to commencing planting operations. Provide for inclusion of all amendments, settling, etc. Subcontractor shall be responsible for shaping all planting areas as indicated on plans or as directed by the Owner.

3-12.8 PREPARATION-

Inspect trees, shrubs and liner stock plant material for injury, insect infestation and trees and shrubs for improper pruning.

Lay out individual tree and shrub locations and areas for multiple plantings to be as they presently exist. Stake locations, outline areas, and secure the Owner’s acceptance before the start of planting work. Make minor adjustments as may be required.

3-12.9 PLANTING SOIL PREPARATION-

At time of planting, the top two inches of all areas to be planted or seeded shall be free of stones, stumps, or other deleterious matter 1 in. in diameter or larger, and shall be free from all wire, plaster, or similar objects that would be a hindrance to planting or maintenance.

Final Grades:

Minor modifications to grade may be required to establish the final grade. Remove all soil generated by excavations to an approved off-site location unless said soil can be utilized to obtain desired grade.

Finish grading shall ensure proper drainage of the site as determined by the Owner. Areas shall be graded so that the final grades will be 1-1/2” in. below adjacent paved areas, sidewalks, valve boxes, headers, clean-outs, drains, manholes, etc. or as indicated on the drawings in shrub areas receiving mulch.

Surface drainage shall be away from the building.

Eliminate erosion scars prior to commencing maintenance period. Dispose of unacceptable or excess soil at an off-site location.

3-12.10 EXCAVATION FOR TREES AND SHRUBS- Planter Pits:

Excavated holes shall have vertical sides with roughened surfaces and shall be of a size that is twice the diameter and equal to the depth of the root ball for all trees and shrubs.

Obstructions:

Notify Owner if unexpected rock or obstructions detrimental to trees or shrubs are encountered in excavations.

Drainage:

Notify the Owner if subsoil conditions evidence unexpected water seepage or retention in tree or shrub pits. Fill excavations with water and allow to percolate out, before placing setting layer and positioning trees and shrubs.
