Chapter 3: Design and Simulation
4.2 Cryogenic Testing of the Detector
1. There is a need for early detection and management of depressive disorders. Health workers in rural communities can be trained with the Mental Health Gap Action Programme Intervention Guide (mhGAP-IG) which will facilitate the recognition and management of depression in late life.
2. The elderly who are separated/divorced/widowed, those that are recently bereaved and those that have impaired cognition should be routinely screened for depression. This is important as this study has shown that these categories of elderly persons are more likely than others to suffer from depression and depression in the elderly has been shown to be associated with suicide risk 3. Evaluations of quality of life should be incorporated into the care plan of elderly with depression. This will enable clinicians and other members of the management team to identify the factors that need to be modified or addressed in order to further improve functioning and wellbeing in the elderly.
4. There is need for more studies in the West African environment on the relationship of depression and quality of life in the elderly. Such studies should be multicenter and preferably longitudinal so as to identify the changes in needs and examine the factors that predict QoL.
