CHAPTER III : METHODOLOGY

C. Method of the Study

2. Data Analysis

In this part, the researcher wants to explain the way of analyzing the data analysis. To analyze the data, the researcher uses qualitative content analysis.

According to Mayring (cited in Drisko and Maschi, 2016, p.8), ‘‘Qualitative content analysis is a collection of methods for the systematic assessment of multiple types of text, addressing not only manifest content but also the topics and key thoughts contained the text as main context’’. By using qualitative content analysis, the writer wants to collect and analyze the movie script as the text, and the main character’s utterance as main context. There are two ways in analyzing the data. In the first way, there are three steps that the writer use to analyze types of illocutionary act uttered by the main character. The first step is the writer want to collect the main character utterances based on two kinds of conversation. The second step is the writer want to analyze and classify the main character utterances into types of illocutionary acts and illocutionary forces. The third step is the writer want to provide two table that are represented types of illocutionary act and illocutionary force. Then, in the second way, there are two stepsthat the writer uses to analyze the effect of main character’s illocutionary act which is perlocutionary effect reacted by two male characters. The first step is the writer wants to identify the effect ofmain character’s illocutionary act that is reacted by Alex and Nathan as the first and second male character. The second step is the writer wants to describe the effect and the reaction after hearing the main character’s illocutionary act. The purpose of doing these way are to find the result which are the effect of hearing speaker’s utterance and the reaction after hearing the utterance by the hearer.

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part is explaining the result of the analysis on the types of illocutionary act performed by the main character, Rachel in the Christian movie I am not Ashamed to Alex and Nathan as the male characters. The types of illocutionary act is based on Rachel’s utterances that she uttered to two male characters and it was analyzed by using Searle’s theory about the classification of illocutionary act. The second part is explaining the result of the analysis on the effect of Rachel’s utterances which is called perlocutionary act to two male characters. The result of perlocutionary act or perlocutionary effect is based on Rachel’s utterances that is responded by two male characters.

A. The Result of Main Character’s Illocutionary Act and Illocutionary Force to Two Male Characters

These part are presented the types of illocutionary act and illocutionary force performed by the main character in a Christian movie I am not Ashamed. The main character is Rachel Joy Scott. The result of the types of illocutionary acts and illocutionary forces are taken from the main character’s utterances that she uttered to two male characters, Alex and Nathan. The utterances come from some scenes in the movie when the main character communicates with two male characters in the beginning, middle, and last scene. The main character utterances will be used to

analyze the types of illocutionary act that is uttered by Rachel as the main character.

Knowing an act of illocutionary act and an illocutionary force are important for finding a purpose and a meaning of the utterances. Austin (1962) stated that illocutionary act is an act that has a certain conventional force in an utterance for informing, ordering, warning and undertaking (p. 108). The speaker wants to communicate an act in an utterance that comes from the speaker’s mind and purpose. Yule (1996) stated that illocutionary act performs some kind of function in mind via communicative force of an utterance (p.47). By uttering an utterance, it helps the speaker to deliver communication force.

1. Illocutionary Act and Illocutionary Force Performed by The Main Character to Alex as The First Male Character

In this part, the writer presents about the types of illocutionary act and illocutionary force performed by the main character. Illocutionary act and illocutionary force idea are the ability of hearer for doing and knowing an act and purpose behind the speaker utterance. The idea shows that the main character utters an act and its purpose. Then, the first male character must know an intended act and a purpose comes behind the utterances that based on main character’s mind. The main character utterance is taken from movie script based on Christian movie ‘‘I am not Ashamed’’. Rachel as the main character uttered her utterances when she
