While you are completing and working on this sub-goal list, you may note one of your self-defeating beliefs surfacing. This is how you can integrate both lists. For example, let us assume that one of your inappropriate beliefs is that you are superior to others. In fact, you may even refer to other individuals as the “little people.”

This form of arrogance and superiority complex will most certainly work against your contact with people. All businesses are people businesses. Trying to establish even a part-time entrepreneurial pursuit is not an easy chore. By projecting yourself with aura of “I’m better than you, so buy my product,” you are laying the foundation for failure.

Confidence is great, and a high self-image is a necessary prerequisite for success. But overextending such a belief into arrogance will not help in your quest for success. You should never attempt a sub-goal unless you have changed the corresponding self-defeating belief.

The future you are constructing is you. It is designed and implemented by you. This does not imply a loss of creativity or a fixation of some type of script for the rest of your life. Always remember these goals have been decided on by you. You are custom designing your own destiny because you are creating it as you desire it to be.

The acts of writing down this game plan and constructing lists and time lines are very important for achieving your desired success. By not committing this plan to writing, you are symbolically placing your intentions to succeed in a non-priority, non-important category. This is the worst possible message to send your subconscious.

Think of other important actions you have taken in your life. When you bought a home or a car, graduated from school, paid your taxes, got married, joined the military, etc., did you not have some form of written documentation?

Your subconscious has long ago learned to identify written acknowledgments with priorities. By not writing down your goals, they become low priority and just another idea in the flotsam of your mind. To inform your subconscious of the importance of your game plan, write it down. Writing down these goals creates the necessary impetus for action and this will bring your desired success to fruition.

There are four levels of planning that facilitate you targeting your goals. These are:

• Beliefs List • Time Line • Sub-Goal List • To Do List

In chapter 6 we discussed these to do lists and lifetime goal lists. The daily to do list will be your reassurance that you’re serious about really reaching your goal. You will look at your list and know that everything on that list can be accomplished by you given your current abilities and priorities.

You may think of your time line and lifetime goal list as an accumulation of these to do lists. Whenever you consider the difficulty of attaining one of your long-term goals, you can focus on your daily lists and know that there are no difficulties you are incapable of handling. This leaves you free to fully enjoy the contemplation of your future success, unencumbered with doubt that your efforts towards custom designing your own destiny will be in vain.

Since you have written down your goals, your subconscious will prioritize them, and you will be many steps ahead of where you would be otherwise on your journey to becoming your empowered self.

We will now illustrate how to use the visualization techniques described in chapter 9 to bring about these desired results.

Targeting Your Goals

Using Visual Imagery To Target Your Goals There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge. Using visual imagery or mental movies to achieve success is not unknown throughout our history. Napoleon reportedly practiced being a soldier for many years prior to his military career. He imagined himself a commander and drew maps of the island of Corsica showing where he would place various defenses, making all his calculations with mathematical precision. Other notable examples of this form of mental rehearsal are Alexander the Great, Henry J. Kaiser and Conrad Hilton.

In order to use visualizations correctly, you must first clearly see a goal in your mind before you can complete it. When you do see a goal clearly in your mind, your creative success mechanism lodged within your subconscious takes over and does the job much better than you could do it by conscious effort or willpower.

This is more than mere positive thinking, as I explained before, because the subconscious reprogramming becomes a permanent part of your new success reality. Each of these exercises should be practiced with the hypnotic techniques previously given.

Let us illustrate this technique with a concrete example. Suppose you have an important job interview shortly, and want to do your best to land this position. Review in your mind the probable questions the interviewer will ask you and any tests you may be asked to take. Rehearse in your mind the answers to these questions and visualize a superior performance on any test. Now actually project in

your mind yourself as an assertive, motivated and confident job applicant who is informed that he/she has the job. Concentrate on these positive images and reinforce this new high self-image and empowerment into your psyche.

This second illustration applies to abundance. By that I mean the acquisition of specific material gain. In this case your goal is to obtain legally a certain amount of money. First, set an exact amount of money in your mind that you desire. Now determine in your mind what service, time, effort, expertise or other aspect of your abilities you are willing to give in return for this specific sum. Set a date when you intend to receive this amount.

Next, devise a game plan for your desired goal and initiate this action immediately. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire; name the time limit for its acquisition; state what you intend to give in return for the money; describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.

Twice each day, preferably upon arising and before retiring, read this statement and incorporate the belief into your mind that you already have this amount of money.

These visualizations are very powerful and can either assist or retard your progress. For example, if you picture yourself vividly as defeated, that alone will make victory impossible. Picture yourself vividly as winning and that alone will contribute immeasurably to success. Successful living starts with a picture, held in your imagination, of what you would like to do or be.

Your current self-image evolved out of negative programming and poor visualizations based on your

experiences. We are using this exact natural technique to reverse this process and build up, rather than tear down, your image of yourself.

An easy way to incorporate this approach is by imagining yourself acting in a theater or on a movie screen. The important thing is to make these pictures as vivid and as detailed as you can. You want your mental pictures to approximate actual experience as much as possible. The way to do this is to pay attention to small details, sights, sounds, objects, in your imagined environment. You are creating a practice experience. And if the imagination is vivid enough and detailed enough, your imagination practice is equivalent to an actual experience, insofar as your subconscious is concerned.

When doing your own visual imagery exercises, see yourself acting, feeling, and “being,” as you want to be. Do not say to yourself, “I am going to imagine this way tomorrow.” Just say to yourself, “I am going to imagine myself acting in this way now.” Imagine how you would feel if you were already the sort of personality you want to be. These techniques build a new image of self. After practicing it for a time, you will be surprised to find yourself ‘acting differently,’ more or less automatically and spontaneously ‘without trying.’

Your current low self-image is the result of memories, real and imagined, you will have built into your subconscious mind. You will find it will work just as automatically upon positive thoughts and experiences as upon negative ones.

As an exercise use either the stage of a theatre or a movie screen and visualize yourself accomplishing each of these goals:

• A personal achievement - fulfilling relationship, losing weight, stopping smoking, making a new friend, etc.

• A professional success - a raise at work, a large sale, a promotion, establishing your own business.

• Resolving success - some past problem, whether personal or business.

To summarize these visual imagery techniques, you should on a daily basis:

• Visualize yourself in the future as you desire to be. • Repeat this mental image and instill your ability to

make this a reality.

• Practice encountering your desired reality by acting, in some manner, as if that reality were already fact.

Helpful Hints About Targeting Your Goals And Creating Your Own Reality

People do not react to things as they are, but to their own beliefs and mental images. Consider the other person’s feelings and viewpoints when you have difficulty with another individual. Success is a people business and to give the other person credit for being sincere but mistaken, rather than willful and malicious, can do much to smooth

out human relations and bring about better understanding among people.

You must be open to seeing the truth about yourself and about life. More often than not, we do not like to admit to ourselves our errors, mistakes, shortcomings, or even admit we have been in the wrong. We do not like to acknowledge that a situation is other than we would like it to be. So we kid ourselves. And because we will not see the truth, we cannot act appropriately.

One secret to success is to ignore the temptation to see who is right, but to find out and implement what is right. It is desirable to admit your mistakes, but not to dwell on them. Make the appropriate correction and move forward with your life. Always be willing to make a mistake. Practice acting boldly with courage, both in your mind and in the outside world. Be sure that you are right and go straight toward that goal.

This voyage of self-discovery is a most exciting and challenging experience. Most of us have not entered this path with proficiency because of a lack of a clear goal and no understanding of the simple methods for creating this journey. To attain any spiritual goal, you must always know what it is you desire and how to realize it.

The techniques presented throughout this book instruct you on how to use your mind to create what you want for your life and to develop the personal power to sustain your growth over time. Unhealthy beliefs sabotage your natural ability to grow spiritually. Healthy core beliefs provide an ideal environment for this growth.

In order to accomplish these goals, we must obtain information that gives us a clear purpose and goal of what we desire. Next, we need to formulate a vision of this goal and eliminate any limiting beliefs that stand in the way of this abundance goal. Finally, we use affirmations, visual imagery and reprogramming techniques to both access our Higher Self and effectively reprogram the subconscious with these goals in mind.

Remember that everyone is unique. Learn to develop appreciation toward your fellow human beings. Take the trouble to stop and think of the other person's feelings, viewpoints, desires and needs. Think more of what the other person wants, and how he or she must feel. The universe will reward you with a boomerang effect when you heed this principle.

Practice treating other people as if they had value, and surprisingly enough, your own self-esteem will increase. For real self-image is not derived from the great things you've done, the things you own, the mark you've made - but an appreciation of yourself for what you are. Get into the habit of remembering past successes and forgetting failures. What matters is the successful attempt, which should be remembered, reinforced, and dwelt upon.

Stop carrying around a mental picture of yourself as a defeated, worthless person. Stop dramatizing yourself as an object of pity and injustice. Use the practice exercises in this book to build up an empowered self-image. Place yourself in the position to target and accomplish your goals. Use errors and mistakes as a way to learning - then dismiss them from your mind.
