The Update navigat ion item opens a new dialog where you can specify general parameters regarding t he AVG update:

When to update files

In t his sect ion you can select between t wo alt ernat ive options: updat e can be scheduled for t he next PC rest art or you can launch t he updat e immediat ely. By default , t he immediat e updat e option is select ed since t his way AVG can secure t he maximum safet y level. Scheduling an update for t he next PC rest art can only be recommended if you are sure t he comput er gets rest arted regularly, at least daily. If you decide t o keep t he default configuration and launch t he update process immediately, you can specify t he circumst ances under which a possible required rest art should be performed:

Require confirmation from the user - you will be asked t o approve a PC

rest art needed t o finalize t he updat e process

Restart immediately - t he computer will be restart ed aut omatically

immediately aft er t he updat e process has finished, and your approval will not be required

Complete at next computer restart - t he updat e process finalization will be postponed until t he next comput er restart - again, please keep in mind t hat t his opt ion is only recommended if you can be sure t he comput er get s rest arted regularly, at least daily

Additional update options

Build new system restore point after each program update - before each

AVG program updat e launch, a system rest ore point is creat ed. In case t he updat e process fails and your operat ing syst em crashes you can always rest ore your OS in its original configuration from t his point . This opt ion is accessible via St art / All Programs / Accessories / System t ools / System Restore, but any changes can be recommended t o experienced users only! Keep t his check-box t icked if you want t o make use of t his funct ionality.  Use DNS update - mark t his check box t o confirm you want t o use t he update

The proxy server is a stand-alone server or a service running on a PC t hat guarantees safer connect ion t o t he Int ernet . According t o t he specified net work rules you can t hen access t he Internet eit her direct ly or via t he proxy server; bot h possibilities can also be allowed at t he same t ime. Then, in t he first item of t he Update settings -

If you select any opt ion using proxy server, you will have t o specify some furt her dat a. The server set t ings can be configured either manually or automat ically.

Automatic configuration

If you select aut omatic configuration (mark the Auto option to activate the

respective dialog section) t hen please select where t he proxy configuration should be t aken from:

From browser - t he configuration will be read from your default int ernet

browser (supported browsers being Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, and Opera)

From script - t he configuration will be read from a downloaded script wit h t he

funct ion ret urning t he proxy address

Autodetect - t he configuration will be detect ed automat ically direct ly from t he

10.12.2.Dial-up

All paramet ers optionally defined in t he Update settings - Dial-Up connection dialog refer t o t he dial-up connect ion t o t he Internet . The dialog's fields are inact ive until you check t he Use dial-up connections option t hat act ivates t he fields.

Specify whet her you want t o connect t o t he Int ernet aut omatically (Automatically

open this connection) or you wish t o confirm t he connect ion manually every t ime ( Ask before connection). For aut omatic connect ion you should further select whether

The URL dialog offers a list of Int ernet addresses from which t he update files can be downloaded. The list and it s items can be modified using t he following control but t ons:

Add – opens a dialog where you can specify a new URL t o be added t o t he list

Edit - opens a dialog where you can edit t he select ed URL paramet ers

Delete – delet es t he select ed URL from t he list

Default – ret urns t o t he default list of URLs

Move Up – moves t he select ed URL one posit ion up in t he list

Move Down - moves t he select ed URL one posit ion down in t he list

10.12.4.Manage

The Manage dialog offers t wo opt ions accessible via t wo butt ons:

updat e files from your hard disk (by default, these files are being saved for 30 days)

Revert virus database to previous version – press t his butt on t o delete t he

latest virus base version from your hard disk, and t o ret urn t o t he previously saved version (new virus base version will be a part of the following update)
