A project is never complete until it has been focused and/ or programmed by the designer. The hands-on aspect of site work is a vital learning tool to help him or her to improve future projects and avoid repeating any mistakes. In the hurry to complete late-running projects it is easy for contractors to see the final focusing stage as unwarranted additional work, but the designer must insist it is done properly. Without someone on site who knows exactly what was intended with the design, and precisely where each luminaire should be focused, the project may never be as good as it should be.

Although programming can only be completed on site with everything in position, a lot can be achieved in advance of site work. At design stage it is worth producing a rough idea of how many different scenes will be required and what the different dimming levels may be for each control channel. This information is valuable to help distill the control requirements and ensure the control system manufacturer can deliver what you require. Like the

luminaire specification, a detailed lighting control specification would be issued as part of the contractual documentation for the project. However, the kind of preprogramming document shown here is typical of the communication that would happen between the lighting designer and control system manufacturer or programmer prior to the beginning of their work on site.
