Las técnicas de benchmarking constituyen un proceso continuo de aprendizaje de las mejores prácticas y su adaptación a nuestra organización. Su adaptación al estudio de las zonas regables permite localizar las mejores prácticas de manejo del riego y su adaptación a las zonas regables a mejorar, siempre buscando un uso más eficiente del agua de riego.

Los primeros indicadores se centraban en la eficiencia en el manejo del riego, aunque en los últimos años los indicadores han evolucionado y cada vez controlan una mayor cantidad de factores relacionados con la gestión de las zonas regables, introduciéndose nuevos conceptos como el de gestión ambiental o gestión financiera.
Existen dos grupos de indicadores, los internos, caracterizan los procesos propios del manejo del riego, y los externos, relacionan entradas y salidas al sistema. Los indicadores externos están especialmente diseñados para comparar zonas regables distintas y para conocer la evolución temporal del rendimiento de una zona durante varias campañas.
Tan importante como una buena elección del conjunto de indicadores a emplear, es la definición de una metodología para la toma de datos que permita comparar los indicadores tomados por personas distintas, con distinta tecnología y en distintos lugares del mundo.
Comienzan a ser frecuentes estudios de control de zonas regables mediante indicadores de gestión en los que se obtienen los datos mediante sensores remotos localizados en satélites, lo que permite abaratar y unificar la obtención de los datos.
Las experiencias actuales del uso de los indicadores de gestión han demostrado su utilidad para la detección de ineficiencias locales y el estudio de tendencias temporales. La creación de un conjunto de indicadores de carácter universal (indicadores desarrollados por el IPTRID), permitirá ampliar los puntos de vista al poder comparar indicadores de zonas regables de todo el mundo, ampliando el número de posibles soluciones a obtener.
