GOAL 1: Improve training support of the prevention workforce by increasing access to and diversity of training offerings.

Strategy: Increase the use of on-line technology for delivery of an expanded array of trainings. Responsible

Timeline Comments, Progress

Action: Support work of the NH Prevention Certification Board (NHPCB) to expedite and expand development of an on-line training catalog BDAS NHPCB Spring 2012 Work currently in progress through contract with CT Board; need additional capacity (dedicated staff and peer review committee time) to expand volume of posted offerings Action: Expand the number of NH-specific

training modules available on-line

BDAS BDAS- contracted trainers Spring and Summer 2012 NH-specific trainings exist that could potentially be further developed in formats for on-line delivery

Action: Review capabilities for increased diversity of training offerings and expanded use of technology to support training through the existing prevention contractor

Goal 2: Promote common knowledge, awareness and capabilities through enhanced multi- disciplinary and multi-sectoral training activities.

Strategy: Develop standardized trainings for each sector, including parents, to establish a common knowledge base and shared interests across sector partners and regions.

Responsible Entity

Timeline Comments, Progress Action: Develop a short (e.g. 2 hour)

introductory prevention module with companion modules specific to each sector (e.g. education, safety, business, etc.); modules should be available on-line and include a state-endorsed certificate of completion

Action: Conduct formative research and peer review by sector to determine relevant training content for each sector Action: Obtain endorsements from corresponding state agencies or associations to assist with marketing

BDAS PTF NHPCB BDAS- contractor Summer 2012

Trainings should include information on the cost, burden of AOD to the community; intent is to assist with engaging a multi-sector prevention ‘auxiliary’ through common understanding and by highlighting opportunities for action across sectors

Strategy: Provide orientation across the system of care (prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery) to increase knowledge of roles and resources and to identify opportunities for increased integration and collaborative action.

Action: Hold a training/orientation in each region describing the state and regional system of care including what resources are available and the role of the RPN

Action: Offer stipends and CEUs for providers to attend; not limited to state- funded providers BDAS RPCs Treatment providers Summer 2012 A gap in awareness of the various components of the system was identified; perception of working in silos

Paying stipends and offering CEUs for providers to attend would show that collaboration is valued even if the stipend is nominal.

Timeline Comments, Progress Action: Convene a planning group

comprised of representatives from the prevention and health care delivery communities to:

a) Identify specific challenges to implementation of enhanced

screening, intervention and referral in the clinical setting

b) Develop specific training and technical assistance strategies to address these challenges

Action: Initiate communication with medical and nursing schools to identify potential opportunities for incorporating enhanced training on substance abuse in core educational curricula

BDAS PTF TTF Bi-State PCA CBHA BDAS Professional schools Summer 2012

The need for improved connections with the clinical care community including increased awareness of resources and improved screening and referral practices was identified in multiple discussion groups

A specific focus area could be on training with OBs on effective prenatal screenings, especially for alcohol

Strategy: Broaden focus of prevention training efforts to more actively incorporate concerns of older populations and populations with co-occurring behavioral health needs.

Responsible Entity

Timeline Comments, Progress Action: Convene a planning group

comprised of representatives from the prevention, mental health and aging communities to:

a) Identify opportunities for convening regional forums for inter-disciplinary training and resource sharing b) Initiate a training needs assessment

and planning for a statewide conference or coordination with annual conference on aging

BDAS Governor’s Commission Council on Mental Health, Substance Abuse & Aging Spring 2012 Incorporation of mental health, expanded age groups and a “whole family” approach to prevention identified as a training need

Review historical precedent for successful statewide conference on this theme

Goal 3: Enhance technical assistance available to sector partners for identification and implementation of low cost, evidence-based prevention and early intervention practices. Strategy: Develop specific technical assistance resources, tools and consultative processes to support partner organizations.

Responsible Entity

Timeline Comments, Progress Action: Develop a toolkit for each sector

with tips and information on how to support prevention activities in their settings

Action: Develop capacity for one-to -one consultative assistance to partner organizations for assessment of

opportunities for implementation of low cost, evidence-based prevention and early intervention practices BDAS BDAS- contractor RPCs Summer 2012

Strategy and actions can be follow-up or

supplementary to sector specific training modules Could include creation of a template for assessing gaps and assets in prevention activities across sectors

Strategy: Develop a recognition program for participating partner organizations. Responsible

Entity

Timeline Comments, Progress Action: Convene a planning group

comprised of Prevention Task Force members and RPN coordinators to develop a sustainable, statewide program for partner recognition

a) Determine criteria for recognition (e.g. completion of introductory training plus adoption of a

prevention-friendly policy or practice) b) Identify form of recognition (e.g.

window decal, certificate, website/ media acknowledgement, award)

BDAS RPCs PTF Spring 2012 A recognition program can demonstrate appreciation of partner efforts and assist with increasing public awareness
