EXERCISE 7 INTERPRETATIVE REASONING

Consider what you think were key parts of the patient’s story and note these down.

In order to appreciate the different levels of interpretation, discuss with your companion what you thought the patient meant at a superficial level, and then at a deeper level. Reflection pointers:

How did the patient’s story influence your decisions?

How much was the patient involved in the decision- making process?

What was the degree of consensus?

How could your interaction have been changed to facilitate a greater depth of understanding of the patient’s narrative?

What was the balance between instrumental and communicative processing within the interaction?

What biomedical, psychological, and sociological knowledge did you learn with the patient today?

How will today’s experience impact on your future interactions with this, and with other patients? Your understanding of this should be complemented with further reading, e.g.:
