should be h i r e d to k i l l the new king. He had k i l l e d s e v e r a l k i n g s in o t h e r c o u n t r i e s . He was t h e r e f o r e h i r e d and sent to K a r t a s u r a . A r r i v i n g at the p a l a c e he a p p e a r e d b e f o r e the k i n g in the m i d d l e o f the

night and said to him: *1 a m the t e n u n g W e i a n d a ; are y o u the k i n g o f J a v a ? ’ T h e k i n g was so t e r r i f i e d by

the h o r r i b l e sight of the w i z a r d that he re p l i e d : ’I a m n ot the king. T h e k i n g of Java is m y u n c l e who l i v e s i n the K a p u g e r a n ( R e s i d e n c e of the p r i n c e Puger), to the n o r t h of h e r e l . T h e w i z a r d t h e n w e n t to the h o u s e of P a n g e r a n Puger, who w h e n told that M a n g k u r a t I I I h ad said that he w a s k i n g a c c e p t e d it g r a c i o u s l y . P a n g e r a n P u g e r then p i t t e d his m a g i c a l p o w e r s a g a i n s t those of the wizard, w h o m he turn e d into a d w a r f . Th e w i z a r d r e t u r n e d to B a t a v i a .

I n this w a y the a u t h o r o f the Babad showed h o w P a n g e r a n P u g e r w a s a c c e p t e d as k i n g by the Dutc h , b e c a u s e M a n g k u r a t X I I had sta t e d this to the e n v o y o f B a t a v i a , the w i z a r d . T h e a u t h o r a l s o m a d e it c l e a r that P u g e r w a s not to be
